The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio Podcast Comments

High-quality programs
Really enjoy the show, even depend on it, less nostalgically than as just great communication, though the window into the past is cool, too. Your comments are like a welcome bridge between the programs and listeners.

Thanks to Adam Graham for bringing us these classic programs. I love listening to these while I work. My favorite is "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar", but there are so many good shows. Adam does a great job providing commentary, too. This nostalgic podcast brings us back to a better time in American entertainment. I listen every day & always look forward to the next episode.

I have enjoyed many hours of wonderful detective stories and great commentary from your show. The format is the best of any podcasts. I think some of the best insights that we get from these programs are the norms of daily life, outlook and expectations of people of that era. How things change through the years. Keep up the great work, thanks!

Adam Graham is a wonderful example of what social media can accomplish. I have enjoyed exploring this new world - for me - of classic radio detectives with him as a knowledgeable and trustworthy guide. He continues to educate himself in both the mystery genre and the world of classic radio. His subjectivity and warm personality make the listening experience seem more "real" and certainly more enjoyable. He allows his listeners to participate by acknowledging and being open to their corrections and additions to his information. His "cowboy" accent invites the listener to enjoy the productions in the moment for what they are rather than to analyse them as a cultural phenomenon of the distant past. I think he does a good job of choosing and organizing the shows for the general audience to explore in their own way. The journey can be oddly interesting or strongly sentimental - or both!

Once I got caught up with the daily podcasts on Great Detectives, and finished listening to all the Dragnet podcasts, I went back and started listening to the shows that had finished their run before I found this podcast. I finished Box 13 during a long trip to Omaha, and am now listening to the beginning of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. I find that I do not enjoy these earlier Dollar shows nearly as much. They have way more tongue in cheek, slapstick almost, humor. Adam, your commentaries have grown on me too. I find myself learning something new almost every show, although I am glad that you cut the time that you talk down a wee bit from way back when. Thanks for sharing your time and talent.

The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio Podcast
Hi Adam Thank you very much for the Pete Kellys Blues shows. I also like Barrie Craig with William Gargan. You mentioned a couple of weeks ago about how actors we hear on the radio do not always look the same in real life. I has seen a few of his old black and white movies on Turner Classic Movies on TV and I must say he does look how I imagine he would. He was a great actor and it is too bad he is gone now. I love his raspy voice. It suited him. As alway Adam keep up your great work. From Joan in southern Ontario, Canada

Not black and white
Fabulous show Grahams - I listen to so many of them, especially now that I have gotten rid of cable and go on-line for my entertainment fix. When I think of old time radio I think of black and white tv shows. But to be truthful, when I listen to old time radio I close my eyes and I see colour. Really love the writing. Great Detectives is Great
The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio is a wonderful collection of classic radio detectives presented in a unique format: The entire surviving library of episodes is serialized on the same day each week. Nearly every night when I go in to say goodnight, they are attentively listening to one or the other! Great Show
Adam does a wonderful job chronicling many of the truly great shows of old time radio. He often gives a little backstory on the shows and at any given time he showcases 4 or so shows and cycles through all of their episodes. My favorites have been Pat Novak, Jeff Regan, Box 13, Richard Diamond and Johnny Dollar. My all-time personal favorite, Barrie Craig has just begun. For many of the shows, its great seeing how they develop and how they work within the whole detective genre. Not unlike reading the next chapter of a great book, its a lot of fun catching the next episode of some great radio dramas. Keep up the great work Adam. Youve done a great job in putting together these shows. Michael Kilfoy

M*A*S*H ran longer than the actual Korean War and Ive been listening to OTR for longer than the fifteen-year 1945-1960 peak. Its getting harder to find fresh material. Every once in a while I come across a Gunsmoke or LGDI thats new (to me). Ive strip-mined Phillip Marlowe and Sam Spade to exhaustion. I love Candy Matson best, but try to put a year or so between repeated listenings.

Great show! Finally got caught up. Ive been listening to them from the beginning. My favorite shows are Pat Novak and Let George Do It. My kids on the other hand (ages 8, 11, and 14) like Box 13 and Sherlock Holmes. I have to admit that of all the shows my least favorite is Sherlock Holmes and I know theres nothing you can do about it but I really dont care for the Kremel ads. Thank you for your hard work. Philip Myers & Genesis, Aricin, and Koa Myers

Thank You
I am 38 years old and Ive been a fan of radio dramas since I was about 15 years old when I used to listen to repeats on AM radio. Actually, it might have started earlier when I was a little girl and my grandmother would regal us with tales of her youth like life without a TV and listening to dramas on the radio. That and podcasts by comedian Larry Miller reminded me how much I love old radio detective stories. Thank you for making them into podcasts.

Love this podcast
Hey Adam, Ive been listening to your podcast for about a month and wanted to tell you how much I enjoy it. I grew up listening to a six episode Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes record set belonging to my father and recently made a point of finding all the existing episode. I just wish I had found your podcast before I purchase them on Itunes. My job requires me to be in a car for long periods and listening to your show helps make the day fly by. I enjoy your commentary a great deal and Johnny Dollar may beat Phillip Marlowe as my new favorite OTR Detective. PS. After listening to the back epsiodes I wanted to put in my two cents and vote for Nero Wolfe, I loved the A&E series with Tim Hutton and Maury Chaykin and have been slowly collecting all the Rex Stout stories

Writing hardboiled mysteries is a tough business. Its feast and famine, and you get the famine first. Its hard to feel down about it, though, when youve got a show like The Great Detectives to keep you going on those long days and nights. Thanks again, Adam, for bringing a lonely writer a little bit of what inspires him to keep going.

Candy or Nero
Thats a tough call. And its not just the "lead" character, the secondary characters are just as important. The Leads -- Archie and Candy are both people of action, brave and willing to do what needs to be done. The Secondary Characters -- Nero and Rembrandt. Both men who enjoy the good things in life and have many interests outside of detecting. However, Nero is a somewhat unique character (well... Brad Runyon... but hes more of Archie and Nero combined together) while Rembrandt is more of the "stereotypical" former drunk sidekick that we have already seen in the form of Jocko Maddigan et al. So, with some reluctance, I vote for Archie (thats Nero in the series name... but Archies really the lead...)

In 2001 and 2002, A&E produced a Nero Wolfe series. It starred the late great Maury Chaykin as the corpulent detective and Timothy Hutton as Archie. Set in NYC in the 1940s. Ive got both seasons on DVD. Wonderful! Nero Wolfe! Brian Ashby Hampton, NJ

Adam, I really enjoy your show. Recently I listened to my favorite, Rocky Jordan. from an archive web site and, although I love Rocky Jordan, I missed your commentary. My favorites right now are Box 13, Johnny Dollar, and Jeff Regan. Sorry that two of those will come to an end. Have fun and hope you continue your podcast for 100s of episodes to come. Ill be listening, Tim

Wolfe. Definitely Wolfe!
Sorry to repeat myself; but love the podcast. As to NW vs CM theres no comparison between the two characters; Wolfe is a well developed character who has translated well to generations of mystery fans whilst Matson seems to have been a one-dimensional, radio series only (?) character. The series most interesting feature being the very unusual use of a woman as lead in a male dominated hardboiled role. Though the radio Wolfe cant compare to the written Wolfe, I think this series better fits the "Great Detectives" moniker.

Candy Matson
I vote for Candy Matson. I also appreciate your podcast very much. The only shows I dont especially care for are Novak and Reagan (though I definitly prefer Regan over Novak!) Thank you for all of your hard work. I first found your Dragnet podcast, loved that it didnt have the commercials, and then started listening to this podcast when you started it. I already have heard most of the episodes of the shows, but I like them very much and also the extra information that you give. I do wish we didnt have to listen to the Petri wine ads! I hate alcohol and tobacco and am grateful that you do not (except for Sherlock Holmes) leave those in. THANK YOU! I have been homebound most of my life and am even worse now. Being also visually impaired since two weeks after my 13th birthday (no longer able to read, which was my favorite thing to do, I enjoy audio books as much as my illness allows, but it limits me a lot, unfortunately) however your podcasts, this one as well as the Dragnet one, play a very large part in my life for keeping my mind off of extreme pain as well as being entertaining. I also like Andrew Rhynes Western podcast, as well as a few others unrelated. You mentioned before that you are a Christian. I am glad to know you are my brother in Christ. :) All the best, Susan

Candy v. Nero
I love both detective stories! This is a hard decision. However, I am voting for Nero Wolfe because Maury Chaykin just passed away. Our family has the complete set of the Nero Wolfe Mysteries in which he starred. I also enjoy the humorous dialogue between Nero Wolfe and his sidekick Archie Goodwin. Since I do miss the Jack Webb portrayal of Jeff Regan, because of his humor and wit, I would like to again hear some comical lines. Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin have a great relationship and it is a joy to listen to. But I also look forward to listening to Candy Matson because she has some enjoyable dialogue with her police Lieutenant friend Ray Mallard also! Whoever wins this vote I will not be disappointed!

Our Miss Brooks
Adam, I'm a major fan of the podcast, especially "Jeff Regan," "Box 13," and Edmund O'Brien-era "Johnny Dollar." Recently, I've added "Let George Do It," to my list of faves. The reason: Claire Brooks. Brooksie is often the voice of reason and an important element in the resolution of George's cases. In a radio landscape littered with dim-bulb girl assistants and sociopathic femme fatales, the smart, intrepid Miss Brooks is a rare woman, indeed. Bill

OMG! Cut the commentary!
The original shows are terrific. The audio is very clear with few exceptions. Audience comments suggesting that the original commercials and other air-checks be removed have no appreciation for the context of old time radio broadcasts or the times in which these shows were originally broadcast. As evidenced by the in-program commercials, the national sacrifices that Americans willingly made during WWII and the Korean Conflict (such rationing and planting Victory Gardens) are a fine example of a unified American public supporting a just cause that virtually every citizen believed in. This is true patriotism unlike the rabble rousing talk radio cacophony broadcast today which aspersions on anyone that dares disagree with the pundit host. Finally consider cutting the commentary before and after each show. These tend to be long, unscripted spontaneous thoughts about the cast and individual episode. While giving a rich context to the podcast and putting the episode in perspective, these comments would benefit from judicious editing to make them pithy and precise. Just one mans opinion. All-in-all, keep up the good work ... you have provided my family with countless hours of wonderful entertainment ... you have let me share with them my memories of listening to many of these shows when I was a youngster in the 1950s and 60s ... listening to Johnny Dollar, Helen Trent, Gunsmoke, et al with my Dad was a great experience. Cheers!

Perry Mason radio serial
I understand the Perry Mason old time radio programs (pre Raymond Burr) were crime serials. I have heard a few podcasts but have always been disappointed in that they were not syndicated as a complete case, that is an ordered set of programs from beginning to end to tell the case story. If complete cases are available they might be a good addition to your future programming. I did some searches but only found lists of shows, like puzzle pieces, it was not clear how they formed complete cases.

A million thanks
Adam, just wanted to tell you I love your podcast! I have been hooked on your Superman podcast for the past year, and only recently started listening to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. I must say, I am addicted. I try to listen to at least one episode a day (usually at work), and I dont really have a favorite. Not a big fan of Sherlock Holmes, though. The Pat Novak for Hire series is great, and I love the way the dialogue is written. Top notch. I really appreciate your commentary before and after each episode as well. You can tell you really are a fan of the genre, and I love the insights and trivia you provide. Thanks, and keep of the great work!! Jeff Mansel, Corinth, Mississippi

Pat Novak
Dear Adam, I was born a little too late to be able to remember them but I am getting much pleasure from all the old radio broadcasts. I have enjoyed your Dragnet broadcasts for some time, and also got a bit hooked on Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Box 13 with Alan Ladd, good entertainment. Ive got to say, though, Pat Novak has become one of my new favorites! The San Francisco setting endeared me, as I grew up in the Bay Area. But the grittiness and the edge in Pat Novak For Hire have mademe anticipate the broadcasts like none of the others! I like the way you meticulously research everything, and keep them in order where you can. I wish the old Perry Masons were available like this. Did I hear somewhere you were doing Have Gun Will Travel and Gunsmoke? Anyway, great work! I hope you nrver quit!

Dragnet fans
Great shows - my 12 yr old daughter and I listen to podcasts in the evening usually of Dragnet just before going to sleep or sometimes in the car when we are commuting home in the evening. Though obviously we are different generations the podcast gives us something we enjoy in common - especially Fridays punchlines. Keep up the good work and interesting commentary. He Tries
This host tries hard but sometimes he misses the point. For example, the "funny" thing about the Box 13 with the humor directed at the short detective is the fact that Alan Ladd was, himself, short. He hid this by appearing on the screen with VERY short co-stars. (Veronica Lake was less than 5 feet tall). Is he spreading himself too thin? Perhaps.

Great Work
Love the new show. I am definitely already a Johnny Dollar fan. I have been a Sherlock Holmes fan for many years and I may be the first of many to tell you that The Noble Bachelor is an original story by Arthur Conan Doyle. It is tenth in the short stories - The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. This fact will probably come back to bite you for a while when more Holmes fans dowload your podcast.
