Best Podcaster I Have Heard
At the end of a busy day, I look forward to crawling into bed, queuing up an episode of Mysteries Abound or Oringinz. Paul brings some of the most interesting articles from around the 'net and news with little to know editorializing of his own. I find his gentle accent to be easy to listen to and the perfect fit for relaxing at the end of the day.

soothing facts
Wonderful commentary on the things that have already happened that you probably didn't know, yet make you realise it doesn't matter. The world is complicated and odd but very interesting. Join in and raise a sleepy eyebrow. I give great thanks for this man and his work :-)

What makes this great?
This podcast presents selected interesting stories from around the world and clumps them together into a sleepy collation that is best heard late at night (probably over a series of nights) to aid sleep. There is little or no original material, no research, no attempt to visit relevant locations nor any form of analysis. There is little or no comment, no assessment, nor critical examination. Paul draws music from the internet – he doesn’t play the music himself, and has no role in writing it nor adding any original incidental aural content. So this is a bad review, right? Not at all. Paul does include snippets from his life, from his work with students at the botanical gardens, to the bloody flood that damaged his home and the loss of the stalwart Rex. That’s not an interference, and is nice, and adds a human content that is appreciated - but that is not the basis of my positive comment. Paul’s voice is excellent, only adds to the content, offers a pleasant alternative to the ubiquitous American accents that dominate the internet, and helps me drop off more than any tablets can do. But again, although that is great, it is not what prompts me to write. Paul is little more than an editor. That’s not to criticise him, it is in fact what makes this podcast so good. He selects and chooses well, and then presents it with an expertise that is to be admired. This is a rare talent. So what is the important point I want to make? When I was an academic, I struggled over and over again to explain to my students the importance of citing exactly where they got their material from. The most common comment I made next to a point was “unsubstantiated assertion”. Why is this so important in any area of academic life? – it is because any reader needs to track back to your source and assess whether that source is reliable. Even now, I always take note of the source Paul cites, and it really really matters if he states if his source is the Daily Mail. Paul always cites his sources - always lets me assess the quality of that source and only by him being so clear, am I able to get real value from listening to his podcast. I urge all students listening to Paul to take note of that, and do likewise. Every essay you write is only editing, and even a PhD is mostly the job of an editor, only then followed by your own original material. So my assessment of Paul’s various podcasts is that they are excellent – it is brilliant editing and presentation, and should be a lesson to all students, for he makes very clear all the time where he gets his interesting stories and facts from. Just because it is editing does not make it less than what it claims to be. In fact, I would rather listen to this brilliant job of editing than hear poorly presented unsubstantiated assertion, which is by far the more common form that podcasts take.

Amazing Podcast
I've been listening to this podcast for a while and Paul Rex has the formula down to perfection. It's an amazing mix of interesting stories layered over trance music. He's recently scaled back from doing longer podcasts, but the free ones are still wonderful and professional-grade pieces of art. If you have an active mind and love to learn by listening you absolutely need to listen to this podcast.

Rest in peace, Rex.
Dear Paul, I was in tears as I listened to the ending of your show, and the dog's prayer. I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved pet Rex. I know you cared about him so much, as I listened to your kind comments about him from time to time on your wonderful podcast. I am the owner of several rescued pets, and my heart breaks every time one of them passes on, so I am very empathetic toward your loss. May you remember every joyful moment Rex brought to you. Sincerely, Cheri

Love your show!
I'm new to podcasts, but have found that yours and I mean Universe Abound as well as Originz are my favorites. The shows cover such a wonderful variety of facinating and unusual topics. I'm sorry to hear your not going to do as many Universe Abound as I'm addicted to it. I have a blackberry and haven't figured out how to subscribe to Bizzar Bazzar as when I go to search for it it doesn't show up. I look forward to each new episode you do. Keep up what ever it is you do because you have a formula that works and your fantastic. AmySue Bortz

I can't get enough of your podcasts. I've started with "Originz", then to "Mysteries Abound" and now back to "Originz". I listen mostly while I'm at work and (sometimes) is the only thing I'm looking forward to do during my working hours (joke). PLEASE keep up the good work! Cheers!

Originz Flooded....
Oz has been devastated by floods, especially in the land of Paul heres wishing you well Paul. There may be a show at Talkshoe not loaded here, but a message there says that Pauls home was badly flooded and it no doubt would effect his work also...likely be months till Originz is back...but wishing you all the of the best podcasts created...

my favorite podcast
Paul has a knack for selecting interesting stories that cover a wide range of themes. His voice is very soothing and rhythmic, as is the music which plays gently behind his stories. I listen to Originz on the bus ride to work and again at night - Pauls voice can lull me into a comfortable sleep which makes this insomniac very greatful. Thank you Paul and please keep up the good work. Russell in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Your podcast is fantastic Paul and I hope you will continue to do it for a long, long time. It is very relaxing, almost hypnotizing and I fully understand why people listen to it when they go to bed. I on the other hand find the stories far too interesting to be able to fall asleep while listening to this show. I listen to a lot of podcasts and Originz is my favorite by far.

After the initial birth woes (that was waaay back) Paul Rex has for a long time been running a smooth, good-humored, interesting podcast. Its professionally made and without stupid howls, grins or grunts as you so frequently find in other podcasts that try to be entertaining or funny. Paul Rex is a joy to listen to. Pual, Great job. I recently discovered your pod cast and instantly fell in love with it. This show is stimulating and calming at the same time. Your choice of music is fantastic. The material you provide is delivered in a professional, soothing, and very interesting manner. It would appeal to anyone. I go to work early just so I can sit in my car in the parking lot and listen to Originz. I am almost caught up to the current episodes and then will have to wait for the new ones to come out. Please don't stop. The show topics make for great conversations at my work place. Thanks from Ohio! Dale

Nice Work!
It has taken far too long for me to offer you and your show the props it deserves. Ive listened to all but 10 of your podcasts... Soon I will have to listen to the new ones one at a time. Unfortunately, I listen to them two or three at a time during the mundane activity of bottling beer at my brewery. The podcasts keep my otherwise civil nature from eroding past the point of no return. Thank you Paul! If youre ever in Victoria, British Columbia, feel free to stop by Driftwood Brewery for a pint! Well done!
Paul, I stumbled across your podcast three weeks ago and it has quickly become one of my very favorites. As a new father, I seldom have time to check my favorite science websites for news and updates as of late. I really do appreciate that you have taken the time to research all of these stories and read them in calm, low-key manner in an ambient atmosphere. It makes me actually look forward to time alone in the car when Im on my way to work, or the store, etc... I find Originz to be entertaining, thought provoking, professional sounding, and all around well thought-out. All I can say, really, is "Well done, Paul!" Paul?s podcast is one of those hidden treasures of the internet . He produces a high quality podcast filled with his personal collection of up-to-date popular scientific news.
