153 - Global Overview: As The Third World Continues To Fight Against Western Economic Exploitation, Obama's A Mixed Bag, The Right Still 100% Wrong

In recent podcasts you've heard about the hottest issues du jour, such as health care reform and the Sotomayor Supreme Court nomination. This show will address issues not, for the most part, as immediately applicable to the water cooler wars. There's a whole world of strife, struggle, bloodshed and sometimes progressive victory out there. It's all about the Third World's centuries-long attempt to throw off Western economic exploitation. That struggle is my real passion. Here you'll get a whirlwind review -- things that caught my eye, and that I think you might want to be aware of, pay attention to over the coming months.Particular attention will be paid to how Obama is doing in this foreign policy realm. The linchpin to understanding all this is my Four Pillars concept, my analysis of the ways the First World economically exploits the Third World. The Four Pillars are how the right effectuates the supreme right-wing directive: transfer wealth from everyone else to the already rich.I go over these Four Pillars in detail in podcast 137. That's a seminal podcast that I urge you to listen to if you haven't.In short, the Four Pillars are: 1 - sweetheart contracts for natural resources2 - unfair conditions of international trade3 - dubious loans that ensnare Third World countries on a debt treadmill, and 4 - imposition of so-called "structural adjustment programs"Woe to any nation that challenges any of the Four Pillars. The Four Pillars will pop up again and again as we go through the day.Let's start by going over some overall stats...(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 149 - Cutting Through Right-Wing Spin About Who's To Blame For The Financial Crisis

[from the transcript]Imagine you're the ultimate right-winger, one of Wall Street's Masters of the Universe. You've made make huge profits by engaging in reckless financial behavior. Your irresponsible actions have brought the world's financial system to the brink of collapse. You then grab hundreds of billions, if not trillions of dollars more, as the government tries to stabilize and repair the system. Finally, to top it all off, you largely succeed in blaming the entire mess on a liberal gay congressman and a federal law designed to help the poor.Liberals, gays, the poor. Three right-wing bugaboos. This is a right-winger's fantasy dream. And it seems like it's coming true for them.In order to counter all the right-wing spin and outright lies about the causes of the global financial crisis and the best remedies for it, you have to see the entire picture. Put everything in context.Let me sketch for you an overall framework, and then afterwards, I'll detail each of its pieces. The framework has two major parts. There's what I call the trigger, and what I call the ultimate cause. The trigger part was the bursting of the housing bubble and countless mortgages, many subprime, going bust. The ultimate cause was the so-called securitization of those mortgages through complex financial instruments called derivatives. The securitization through derivatives was what made the housing collapse system-threatening and global in scope. The right likes to focus only on the housing-mortgage element. And even for that, they mis-assign blame. As you'll see, with both the housing-mortgage trigger, and the securitization-derivatives ultimate cause, the villain is the right-wing deregulation frenzy during the Clinton and Bush administrations.[Please listen to the podcast for the details, and to hear choice clips from Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Morris and Pat Buchanan...](PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 148 - Privatization Kills: Troops Electrocuted In Iraq, Cheney's Former Company To Blame / Debunking Right-Wing Lies About U.S. Corporate Tax Rates

In the first segment, you'll hear how U.S. soldiers in Iraq are being electrocuted due to faulty electrical work. The work was performed by private contractors hired under the Bush policy of privatization. This perfectly illustrates so much of what's wrong with right-wing ideology and policies. For example:Green Beret Staff Sgt. Ryan Maseth was stationed at a base in Iraq that used to be one of Saddam's palaces. This 24-year-old Pittsburgh native stepped into the shower in January, 2008. The water pump was not properly grounded, and when he turned on the shower, a jolt of electricity shot through his body and electrocuted him...The surging current left burn marks across his body, even singeing his hair. Army reports show that he probably suffered a long, painful death. There have been 18 electrocution deaths, hundreds of burns, and untold numbers of fires due to bad wiring in Iraq.So was there a common thread linking these incidents? Were they caused by Al Qaeda saboteur electricians? Sunni insurgent electrical terrorists? No, they were the fault of Dick Cheney's old cronies. The common thread here is that the multinational corporation KBR did the electrical work on the facilities and equipment involved in these and other incidents.KBR is on the verge of being charged with negligent homicide by the Army. This is a perfect example of the detriments of the right-wing policy of privatization.Much more in the podcast about contractor wrongdoing, and the harmful effects of this right-wing obession with turning everything over to corporate control. The second segment is a Quickblast: you'll listen to and then learn how to debunk a major right-wing talking point about corporate taxes.Check out the podcast for all the details.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 147 - More Lies Than Ever Before: The Right-Wing Renews Its Assault On The Estate Tax

Today you'll hear all about the right-wing's dishonest, but unfortunately effective propaganda campaign against the estate tax.A preview of the reality check I'll give you, all aspects of which are fully documented:-- Only 1/5 of 1% of Americans will ever pay even a penny of estate tax. In other words, 99.8% of Americans will never pay any estate tax.-- Less than 80 small businesses in the entire country will owe any estate tax in 2009, a year which employs the tax level Obama wants to keep.-- 18 of the wealthiest American families have poured multiple millions of dollars into a lobbying effort to repeal the estate tax.-- Cutting federal tax revenues by reducing or eliminating the estate tax is part of the larger right-wing strategy of "starving the beast," defunding the government so it has no money left for a social safety net.-- Shredding the social safety net will increase human misery, suffering, pain and death. He kicked out of power the long-entrenched, extreme right-wing ruling party. 137 - The Right's Big Lie About Upcoming Labor Legislation / A Primer On How The West Uses Right-Wing Ideology To Economically Exploit The Third World

This bill is labor's number one priority in Congress, and the right has declared war on it.Next, I'll give you a short primer on what I call the four pillars, the four ways the right in the Western world economically exploits the Third World. The four pillars you'll hear explained are:1 - sweetheart contracts for natural resource extraction2 - unfair conditions of international trade3 - dubious loans to corrupt Third World governments4 - imposition of onerous Structural Adjustment Programs on loan recipient nationsUnderstanding 1-4 above is key to interpreting so much of what you read about foreign affairs in the corporate-owned press.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 133 - Obama's America vs. McCain's America: Ten Reasons Undecideds Should Choose Obama

Usually on Blast The Right you hear me condemn right-wing ideology and policies. Not only the theory, but the negative effect of right-wing rule on flesh-and-blood humans. Then the idea is, you use the information to win the water cooler wars, to "blast the right."With just about a month to go before the election, arguing with right-wingers isn't the most productive use of your time now, I don't think. This presidential election could well be razor-tight. The polls consistently indicate that 4-8% of the electorate says they're undecided. And what really struck me, up to a total of 18% say they could still change their mind.In other words, they're persuadable. The undecideds and persuadables aren't guided by ideology or party loyalty. Or else they already would have firmly settled on a candidate. So in this podcast I'm going to set out Ten Reasons undecideds and persuadables should choose Obama, hopefully in a way undecideds and persuadables will find convincing.A bit softer in tone and rhetoric than usual, since undecided voters are generally ideological and want "Just the facts, ma'am."Remember, in addition to the audio of this show, there's a transcript available directly below, in case you want to send all or part of it to an undecided voter you know. The ten reasons cover the following areas:1. Proper Role of Government2. Supreme Court3. Right To Choose4. Taxes5. Minimum Wage6. Unions7. Health Care8. Safeguarding Our Food, Water & Air9. Presidential Vetoes10. War and PeaceLinks promised in show:Call undecided votersCheck your voter registration/register to vote (PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. Also, be sure to stay around for my closing comments. You'll learn about Blast The Right transcripts, as well as about some listeners going the activist route. And there's also a new tune to close the show with.Every week it seems, there's a new revelation, even more hard to believe than the last one, about the Bush administration's lust for war and torture.I don't know about you, but after a point, do you start to just file them away mentally, saying to yourself, I'll think about that later? It's almost too much to accept as reality, as something that you have to deal with.I've picked some highlights here. Every fact you're about to hear is true. If it was presented as a movie script, no one would believe it.In fact, let's imagine I'm pitching such a script to a producer. How might the script open? How about this scene:You see a meeting room, and from what's visible through the window, it could be within the White House. You can't make out who's talking, but it sounds like they're discussing... What?! Whether they can combine water-boarding with stress positions for a prisoner named Muhammad?Who are these people? Low level operatives sneaking in a meeting at, could it really be, the White House? About an illegal subject? But before you can find out more, you leave that scene and enter a long series of flashbacks, which show how this maybe-in-the-White-House cabal came to meet...You first see a bunch of right-wingers of the neocon variety openly plotting for US world domination. In 1997, neocons like Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Jeb Bush and others sign the founding charter for an organization called the Project for a New American Century, PNAC for short...For the rest of the script, please listen to the podcast!(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 122 - With The Heparin Drug Deaths, As With All Other Things: Kill My Pet, Kill My Kid, Even Kill Me, But Just Don't Mess With My Right-Wing Ideology

Two podcasts ago you heard about how:--in the financial markets, ill intentions by some, and incompetence by others, has led to big problems--to solve these problems, a strong government regulatory effort is needed.Right-wing ideology does nothing in the way of prevention, and offers nothing in the way of a cure. Now today, please shift your focus to medicines: same picture.Right wing ideology has led to big problems, and offers no solutions. So far, 81 deaths in the United States have been linked to fatal allergic reactions to contaminated batches of the blood thinner heparin. Several hundred more patients have had severe adverse reactions to the drug.Right-wing ideology, which wholesale opposes government regulation of business, stands in the way of a solution.Indeed, the Bush administration has been systematically taking apart the Food and Drug Administration, not strengthening it.Also:--You'll hear about some unbelievable ideology-driven behavior from another head of a Bush agency. The Senate wanted to give the Consumer Product Safety Commission more money and authority. But guess what? The head of the agency objected!--I blow apart the right-wing myth about the establishment of federal regulatory agencies. Look behind the story of the creation of virtually any government regulatory body, and you'll find the same thing: a crucial, urgent need that only government action could meet. Ever heard of Upton Sinclair's book The Jungle?--I undertake maybe a mission impossible: trying to get inside the right-winger head about all this. Remember Jim Jones, who told his followers to drink the poisonous Kool-Aid, and they did? They had a religious belief in Jones, and would blindly obey his every dictate.I guess that's what it is with these right-wingers.Their right wing ideology must be followed no matter what, like a fundamentalist religion. No matter the consequences to self and others.Go ahead, kill my pet, kill my kid, even kill me - but don't let the evil government be involved, because that would be --against my religious belief in small, ineffective, do-nothing government!I think right-wingers can aptly be called, Jim Jones conservatives. In the podcast, you'll also hear clips of Rush Limbaugh and Ronald Reagan spouting their usual inanity(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 118 - Blasting, Ever So Gently, Wayward Progressives: Why Nader Supporters Should Rethink Their Position

Ralph Nader recently announced he's running yet again this year for President. I originally thought a segment on that would be a QuickBlast, maybe 2 or 3 minutes. But the more I thought about it, the more things I realized I had to say.And the more important I realized the subject was. What you're about to hear has a wider applicability than just Ralph Nader, and a more durable shelf-life than just this year's election. It applies to everyone thinking of third party voting in '08, and beyond; to everyone who denigrates electoral politics, this year and thereafter; to everyone who is contemptuous of strategic voting when worldwide life and death issues are at stake, now and in the future.Discussing the Nader candidacy also provides you and me the opportunity to review what 8 years of right-wing rule has actually meant, not just in theory, but to flesh and blood humans. And hence to establish the stratosphere-high stakes in the '08 elections. If a runaway train is heading towards you, all you want first thing, is it to be stopped. You don't care if the person stopping it is a great person, you don't care whether they'll reverse the train, if they understand how to prevent runaway trains, or if they'll improve our national rail system.First and foremost, right now, you just want the damn train stopped in its tracks. You and I are facing a runaway train, the right-wing project to transform this country into a system of economic feudalism and soft fascism. Another 8 years of right-wing control of the reins of government, and we may well be past the point of no return. So the mantra today is, stop the runaway train! Cast a vote that will serve to eject the right-wing from control of our government.Stopping the runaway train is job #1 now, without which we may well be unable to do any other job.Voting for Nader doesn't accomplish that, and could produce the exact opposite result. Persuading Nader voters to vote Democratic may well be one of the most direct, effective ways to Blast The Right in the next 8 months...In the podcast, I'll give you cold hard polling numbers from 2000 that prove Nader cost Gore the election. You'll hear why supporting Nader is completely illogical.I'll sketch for you some of the real policy differences between right-wingers and Democrats, not least of which is what will happen to the Supreme Court. And, I'll let you know in no uncertain terms what gets me the most furious at Nader supporters who say they don’t care if their actions wind up electing a right-winger: It's their cavalier attitude towards the suffering of others.I'll detail for you some of the additional human misery, suffering, pain and death that will be inflicted on the innocent in a continuation of right-wing rule, compared to even an admittedly-flawed Democratic administration.A bonus: I've included in this feed, the "Ralf Na'dir" strip by my friend, syndicated cartoonist Matt Bors.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 114 - Economic Mobility: A Reality-Based Part Of The American Dream, Or A Myth Now Used By The Right-Wing To Justify Economic Injustice?

Today you'll hear exposed as a falsehood the pervasive myth -- pushed hardest by the right-wing -- that there is great economic mobility in the United States. You'll see that the real picture is not so pretty. The conventional political wisdom has always been, the public doesn't care much about income and wealth inequality, because of the widely shared belief that everyone has a shot at becoming rich, that there is great economic mobility in the United States. The right-wing, by its own admission, needs the mobility myth to justify and allow the perpetuation of rampant inequality. Here's the reality: a report released as a joint effort by four major think tanks, including two ultra-conservative ones, the American Enterprise Institute and The Heritage Foundation, concludes[N]ew data...raises provocative questions about the continuing ability of all Americans to move up the economic ladder and calls into question whether the American economic meritocracy is still alive and well.Recent studies suggest that there is less economic mobility in the United States than has long been presumed. The last thirty years has seen a considerable drop-off in median household income growth compared to earlier generations. And, by some measurements, we are actually a less mobile society than many other nations, including Canada, France, Germany and most Scandinavian countries. This challenges the notion of America as the land of opportunity. You'll find much more in the podcast you can use when conversing with your friendly local right-winger.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 113 - Year End Review: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Of 2007

Today we'll review what the right-wing was up to in 2007, as you heard it on Blast The Right. Plus, I'll have some updates for you.Usually this podcast covers one or two topics in depth. Today you'll hear a summation of over 40 podcasts, so the pace will be brisk. In order to get a handle on this year's subjects, I grouped the podcasts by subject matter, and that's how I'll go through them. You can see that document organizing the podcasts by subject matter here. When going through this year's podcasts, the standout theme just leaped out at me, best exemplified by the Biblical passage where it says that by their fruits shall you know them, and that "the bad tree bears evil fruit." The bad Bushian right wing tree had indeed borne evil fruit -- increased human misery, suffering, pain and death. This was obvious for all to see this yearThe Bushian fruit was probably no more evident than in the ever-increasing cascade of stories in 2007 about unhealthy, dangerous products and practices afflicting Americans, which were the results of the Bush mania for hollowing out and crippling the regulatory agencies. This they did through budget cuts, draconian staff reductions and woefully misguided policies. The next major subject we covered was economic justice. I devoted more podcasts to this than just about any other issue. You know my mantra: Everything the right-wing does is designed to accomplish one of two things: either (a) transfer wealth from everyone else to the rich, or (b) distract everyone else from the fact that (a) is occurring. There was a growing stream of information all year showing just how amazingly earnest and successful the right-wing has been with this wealth transfer. The other major area discussed this year was foreign policy and Western economic exploitation of the Third World. The Blast The Right theme here is, as at home, so abroad.Did you know the US tried to steal Iraq's oil in 2007?For the details of the above three areas, and much more, please listen to the podcast!(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 112 - As At Home, So Abroad: Right-Wing Policies Increase Human Misery, Suffering, Pain And Death In The Third World

Today you'll hear how extreme right-wing policies of the United States literally cause starvation and death in the Third World. And, I'll show you the link between this unfortunate situation, and two hot button front page issues in the US, health care, and the occupation of Iraq. The microcosm will be Malawi, where right-wingers in the US and international financial institutions insisted that the government cut back if not eliminate its fertilizer subsidies to small farmers. The result: famine and death. The marcrocosm will be the entire Third World: how Western economic policies are designed to, and all too well do, transfer wealth from poor nations to the rich.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 111 - Once And For All: Calling Out Right-Wing Christians On Their Kill-Jesus Ideology And Behavior

Today you'll hear a whirlwind tour of my thoughts on right-wing Christians, especially on how to effectively debate them. The centerpiece of this week's show is my Equivalent Alternative Solutions challenge. Right-wing Christians, from the roots of their right-wing ideology to the fruits of their policies, violate the most fundamental of the teachings of Jesus regarding how we're to interact with our brother and sister humans. These teachings are most powerfully expressed in the 25th book of Matthew, verses 31-46, the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats. This is extraordinarily important, so even if you're not Christian or not of any religious bent at all, still, listen up! It's critical to your being an effective progressive advocate that you know this stuff. It's the basis of my Equivalent Alternative Solutions challenge. Please be aware that the word stranger in the Bible is a synonym for refugee and immigrant. On Judgment Day, before Jesus...will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them…the sheep at his right hand…the goats at the left. 34. Then the King will say to those at his right hand, 'Come…inherit the kingdom prepared for you… 35. for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36. I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37. Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? 38. And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? 39. And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' 40. And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' 41. Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42. for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43. I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44. Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' 45. Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' 46. And they will go away into eternal punishment…I wasn't raised a Christian, but when I read this for the first time it literally blew me away. It still doesI'll now show you how to use this Matthew 25 passage to irrefutably challenge right-wing Christians, especially in each and every situation where they oppose a plan to reduce human suffering. You tell them, it's fine to oppose government programs to help the Matthew 25 "least of these," as conservative Christians usually do. But to avoid violating the Matthew 25 injunction, conservative Christians must then propose their own Equivalent Alternative Solutions. Equivalent Alternative Solutions are ones which:• help at least the same number of people who legitimately need help • provide at least the same amount of assistance • get the help to them at least as quickly, and• are at least as certain to accomplish these goals Equivalent Alternative Solutions can certainly be completely non-governmental, as long as they meet these four criteria. But conservative Christians consistently both oppose the plans of others to help the "least of these," and fail to offer Equivalent Alternative Solutions of their own.Conservative Christians -- whether voters, politicians or talk show hosts -- must be challenged: "What about Matthew 25? If you oppose my plan to help some of the "least of these," what do you propose instead? How does what you're espousing here fulfill what Jesus commanded in Matthew 25? In fact, isn't what you're doing exactly what Jesus condemned in Matthew 25, not helping the least of these?"That's the EAS challenge.Right-wingers won't have an answer, but they'll raise any of a host of objections to the challenge.Let's go through them comprehensively, so you're prepared for whatever is thrown at you.To hear the objections, and how to respond, just listen to the podcast!(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 110 - The Right-Wing Goal Of Transferring Wealth From Everyone Else To The Already-Rich, And What FDR Had To Say About It

Today you'll hear all about the true bottom line when it comes to the right-wing.As part of this, you'll hear some breathtaking clips of Franklin Delano Roosevelt condemning the right-wingers of his time.A preview:One of my favorite quotes of all-time is from John Kenneth Galbraith: The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. I have what I call the Jack Clark corollary to that wonderful Galbraith passage. Everything the right-wing does is designed to accomplish one of two things, either:(a) transfer wealth from everyone else to the rich, or,(b) distract everyone else from the fact that (a) is occurring. For example, since 1980, the richest 1% of Americans have doubled their share of the nation's income. It's the most unequal situation since the Great Depression.Transfer wealth from everyone else, to the wealthy. Here's a bit of what Roosevelt said, that you can hear directly from his own mouth, in the podcast: The royalists of the economic order have conceded that political freedom was the business of the Government, but they have maintained that economic slavery was nobody's business. They granted that the Government could protect the citizen in his right to vote, but they denied that the Government could do anything to protect the citizen in his right to work and his right to live.Today we stand committed to the proposition that freedom is no half-and-half affair. If the average citizen is guaranteed equal opportunity in the polling place, he must have equal opportunity in the market place. These economic royalists complain that we seek to overthrow the institutions of America. What they really complain of is that we seek to take away their power. Our allegiance to American institutions requires the overthrow of this kind of power.Check out the podcast for the rest!(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 108 - Reason To Cheer, Part III: Increasingly Left-Leaning Youth Will Turn The Country Increasingly Progressive

A headline early this past summer said it all:Young Americans Are Leaning Left, New Poll FindsA few tidbits:Pew Research found that since Reagan the percentage of young adults calling themselves Republicans has declined from 55 to 35%. That loses out to young Democrats, who now account for 48% of young adults. On specific issues:While 47% of the public would support a "universal, government-sponsored national health care insurance program" -- not bad -- fully 62% of young voters would. A super-majority.On wedge issues like race and gay rights:While only 36% of whites in the general public say they "completely agree" that "It's all right for blacks and whites to date each other," fully 64% of white youth feel that way.And Pew found that while those age 26 and older reject allowing gays and lesbians to adopt children by 50-44%, 18-25 year-olds support gays and lesbians having that right, by 61% to 25%, a major league turnaround.Overall, as summarized by The New York Times, America's youth "have continued a long-term drift away from the Republican Party."If you're a progressive, feel free to smile now as broadly as you wish, let out a great sigh of relief (or a big cheer), and picture a bright future with a totally marginalized right-wing. 106 - Reason To Cheer, Part II: If Americans Hold Progressive Views, Why Don't They Describe Themselves As Progressives? Here's Why…

Mainstream poll after mainstream poll has consistently shown solid majorities of your fellow citizens -- often 2/3 or more -- endorse all of these progressive positions:--the government should provide more, not less services--the government should take care of those who can't take care of themselves--the government should guarantee health care for every American--the distribution of wealth in this country is unfairly concentrated--the wealthy pay too little in taxes--the minimum wage should be raised--there is a moral imperative to pay workers a living wage--undocumented immigrants should have a path to citizenship--Democrats reflect the nation's moral values more than do RepublicansTogether, these constitute bedrock progressive principles and policies. The mystery in question here arises, when Americans are asked to describe themselves as liberal, moderate or conservative. If more than half, often 2/3 or more of Americans espouse these progressive positions, shouldn't 2/3 or more of Americans describe themselves -- given the choices liberal-moderate-conservative -- as liberal? They should, but they don't.Two organizations have been asking this question for decades. In short, National Election Studies found 23% liberals, Harris only 18%.If you told your friendly local right-winger, that Americans hold overwhelmingly progressive positions on most every issue, your friendly local right-winger could throw the Harris and NES polls back at you.So how you should you respond? Here's how.First...For details, listen to the podcast! You'll learn about self-described conservatives who actually hold progressive positions. And in fact, you'll hear in his own words, a self-described ultra-conservative realizing that he supports many positions that are progressive. How does this happen? 105 - Reason To Cheer, Part I: Americans Support Progressive Policies On Most Every Issue, And Our Progressive Majority Is Growing Larger And Larger

In today's podcast you'll see beyond a shadow of a doubt that we progressives are not the fringe, the right-wing is. You'll hear how our progressive views are indisputably shared by the majority of Americans. This will be, in sum, a cheer yourself up podcast. Smile, Mr. or Ms. Progressive, you're not on candid camera, but you still have reason to smile.Perhaps the most daunting right-wing myth of all is that we progressives are a fringe group, out of touch with "mainstream America."How many times have you been engaged in an exchange of views with your friendly local right-winger, and been told, "Oh, your ideas are very nice in theory, but common sense Americans know they'd never work in the real world, and don't support them. America is a conservative nation."Well cheer up! What you have to do is invoke the golden rule-of-thumb of Blast The Right: whatever a right-winger says, the exact opposite is true. And never more so, than here.America is not a conservative country, Americans hold progressive views on virtually every issue you can imagine. This has been confirmed in poll after poll after poll, in some cases for decades, in others the trend line heading progressive and now having reached that promised land in most instances. So let's go through a bunch of issues, and as we do so you can sit back and bask in the glory of being in synch with the majority, often a supermajority, of American public opinion. And then you can later use this knowledge to kick some right-wing butt! Please be assured that all the polls I cite are solid, mainstream polls, such as Gallup, Pew Research Center, the Associated Press/Ipsos, the New York Times/CBS, the American National Election Studies (ANES) from the University of Michigan and Stanford, the Washington Post, and Zogby.Let's start off with possibly the most broad-scale issue of all in the right's arsenal of propaganda: what should be the overall role of government. The right's two-word talking point is "small government."Is the right supported by public opinion here? Do Americans want to downsize their government?No...For details, listen to the podcast!!(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 47 - Coulter vs. The Jersey Girls: Ann's Real Agenda & Her Underlying Psychological Disorder

Here's an approach to this brouhaha you haven't seen elsewhere:First we'll go over the who, what, when and where of Ann Coulter's vicious attack on four 9/11 widows, who are known as the Jersey Girls. You'll hear a clip of Ann saying something about these women that is even more heartless than what she wrote in her book. Then after we listen to Ann try to defend herself on Fox and NBC, we'll analyze the "why," the real dual purpose of her cruel comments: (1) to permanently lower the bar, so that other heretofore more circumspect right-wingers will feel free to viciously personally trash victims whose policy prescriptions don't fit the right-wing mold; and(2) to intimidate victims involved in news stories, make them reluctant to ever speak out, lest they receive from Coulter and other right-wing character assassins, the Jersey Girl treatment. The second half of the podcast will examine Coulter's output over the years, and consider whether she possesses three of the personality traits of a sociopath: --an obsession with causing others misery and death; --an extreme lack or even absence of empathy for others;--the derivation of a perverse psychological pleasure from her actions. If you've never heard Ann's bloodthirsty comments in one sitting, be prepared for some ugly words.PS: As a bonus, I'll play you a bit of a song written explicitly about Ann Coulter.

All the while, the right accomplishes this evil with a smile on its face, boasting of their doing good deeds! The profits of the coal industry -- a major GOP contributor -- are more important to right-wingers than any trapped miners running out of oxygen to breathe.Just like the profits of the pharmaceutical industry -- another major GOP contributor -- are more important to right-wingers than any sick senior citizens who can't afford their medication. As I close the podcast: So there you have it: 2 hours of oxygen for trapped coal miners when 48 is recommended by everyone as a bare minimum, and, a bizarre and deadly gap in prescription drug coverage that will emotionally traumatize, physically sicken and sometimes kill our elderly.Greed and a dollop of sadism leading to increased human misery, suffering, pain and death. All in a good day's work for the right-wing.Listen to the full podcast for all the details!

103 - Conservative Group Calls For Presidential Candidates To Sign Pledge To Reverse Bush Constitutional Abuses

Today we're going to hear from some conservatives who have banded together to stop Bush's power grab. You heard me correctly, conservatives. You'll get an overabundance of ammo to use when next you have the pleasure of engaging in conversation, a right-winger who hasn't yet been enlightened by these conservative brethren of his. There's been increasing talk lately of impeaching Bush and Cheney. Much of the discussion is focused on their lying us into war, firing the federal attorneys for political reasons, and the like.Constitutional scholar Bruce Fein -- drafter of the first article of impeachment against Bill Clinton! -- and three other stalwart conservatives have founded a group, American Freedom Agenda. They explain their purpose as follows:Especially since 9/11, the executive branch has chronically usurped legislative or judicial power, and repeatedly claims that the President is the law. The constitutional grievances against the White House are chilling, reminiscent of the kingly abuses that provoked the Declaration of Independence. The American Freedom Agenda’s (AFA) mission is twofold: the enactment of a cluster of statutes that would restore the Constitution’s checks and balances as enshrined by the Founding Fathers; and, making the subject a staple of political campaigns and of foremost concern to Members of Congress and to voters and educators.…Now is no time for summer soldiers or sunshine patriots in defense of American freedom.A progressive could just about have written that, no?We're going to focus here on the group's Freedom Pledge, which they want all Presidential candidates to sign. The beginning of the Pledge reads:I, (candidate), hereby pledge that if elected President of the United States I will undertake the following to restore the Constitution’s checks and balances, to honor fundamental protections against injustice, and to eschew usurpations of legislative or judicial power. These are keystones of national security and individual freedom:Next follows 10 items. It's a literal catalog of Bush/Cheney offenses against the Constitution.Several of them would form the basis of articles of impeachment.I'm going to go through them now. Some of the 10 I'll briefly mention, others we'll discuss in more depth with audio commentary from Bruce Fein. For the details, please listen to the podcast…(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 102 - The Science Be Damned: Gag Orders And Censorship Are The Right-Wing Prescription For Your Health

Today the focus is on health.I'll tell you how gag orders and censorship seem to be the preferred right-wing prescription for improving the health of the American public. It all relates to recent revelations by Bush's former Surgeon General.Dr. Richard H. Carmona recently testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that he felt his duty as surgeon general was to address even the nation's most controversial health topics and to issue balanced reports on them. Just like his job description requires. And there's the root of the problem. Carmona wanted to actually perform his statutory duties. But hetold a Congressional panel...that top Bush administration officials repeatedly tried to weaken or suppress important public health reports because of political considerationsThe areas included global warming, stem cells, sex education, prison health care, and second hand smoke.Let's examine the right-wing wrong-doing in each area...Beyond the direct harm to public health caused by the Bush administration's gagging and otherwise impeding the efforts of the nation's surgeon general, was the insistence that Dr. Carmona play the role of political cheerleader. He was ordered to make speeches supporting Republicans running for office, as well as to attend political briefings. Most bizarrely -- this is really a doozy --Dr. Carmona said he was ordered to mention President Bush three times on every page of his speeches.Three times, huh? Why three times? Why not just twice? Or why not a bit more often, four times? I wonder, did Frank Luntz conduct focus group studies to determine how many times is the optimal amount to mention the president in each page of a speech?Listen to the podcast for more details.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 101 - Hugo Chavez And The Television Station: Fact Vs. Fiction

Today I'm going to discuss with you the recent controversy over Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's not renewing the broadcast license of a television station in that country. All nations license the right to use their public airwaves, since the demand for use of the airwaves far outstrips the supply. In the US the Federal Communications Commission performs this function, granting terms of 8 years. In Venezuela, the term is 20 years.Broadcasters must serve the public interest, and if not, their licenses can be revoked, or not be renewed. And there's the rub, as Willy S. said.We need to go over the events of the April 11, 2002 coup in Venezuela that attempted to remove Chavez from office, and the role RCTV played in that coup.As you'll hear, Chavez was totally justified in not renewing RCTV's license based on its support of the coup. It's certainly not serving the public interest to support the overthrow of the democratically elected government of a nation. We'll also go over what happened in Venezuela after Chavez's license non-renewal, and how the right-wing tried to exploit, if not outright create, a crisis in Venezuela.Programming note: for the rest of the summer, Blast The Right will appear every other week.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 100 - Immigration Reform's Path To Citizenship: It's Not Amnesty, It's Keeping Our Part Of The Bargain

Today we're going to come back to an issue we last discussed in depth over a year ago, immigration. We'll examine several aspects of this most contentious subject, and I'll present a way of looking at the situation you may not have heard before. In short, I'll tell you why, it's not about amnesty--it's about keeping our part of the bargain.Included will be some clips of right-wingers that will make your hair stand on end.According to the polls, Americans clearly don't support mass deportation, and any right-winger who tells you otherwise, you can confidently call either ignorant of the facts, or a liar. However, and this is what I want to address at some length in this podcast, even among the nearly 6 in 10 Americans in the Gallup poll who would provide a path to citizenship, there are too many who do so begrudgingly -- as if they were being so magnanimous -- with the attitude "oh, they're here, it’s too much trouble to deport them, let them stay." This attitude shares with the right-wing, the underlying assumption that these undocumented workers have no right to stay here. But they do. Here's why...(listen to the podcast for the details)Scheduling note: no podcast next week.Next Blast The Right Live Call-in ShowJuly 9, 7pm PST (10 pm EST).Please go here for details on how to listen.Guest: Cory Burnell, co-founder, Christian Exodus. 99 - More GOP Racism: "Vote Caging" To Prevent African-Americans From Exercising Their Right To Vote

Today we're going to discuss yet another example of GOP racism: their recent attempts to disenfranchise African-American voters. The modern day Republican Party is not the party of Lincoln. Quite the opposite.Modern day Republicans don't walk around in Ku Klux Klan robes. But the GOP has engaged in a decades-old and still ongoing massive and intense effort to prevent African Americans from voting. So Republicans might as well walk around in Ku Klux Klan robes. The present-day GOP doesn't burn crosses. It throws African-Americans off the voter rolls. Before we get into what the GOP did in the 2004 presidential election, you really have to understand where the GOP is coming from.Starting in 1968 with Richard Nixon, the Republican Party employed what was dubbed the “Southern strategy.” It was designed to attract the votes of whites who were upset that the Democrats had lent their support to civil and voting rights for African Americans. This is not something right-wingers can deny. The late Lee Atwater was the grandpappy of all Republican dirty campaign strategists. In fact, Karl Rove was a disciple of Lee Atwater. In a 1981 interview, Lee Atwater described the Southern Strategy. Now when I read what Atwater said, instead of the racial epithet that rhymes with “trigger” that Atwater uses, I’m going to use the term “N word.” Atwater told his interviewer thatYou start out in 1954 by saying ‘N word, N word, N word.’ By 1968, you can’t say ‘N word.’” That hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like “forced busing,” “States’ rights,” and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now that you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things, and a byproduct of them is that blacks get hurt worse than whites. There you have it, right out -- literally -- in the open. The premier Republican strategy guru, admitting to a blatantly racist agenda....What we'll now get into, preventing African-Americans from voting, even has come up in the recent Congressional hearings into the firing of the federal prosecutors by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. For further details, please listen to the podcast.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 98 - "Enhanced Interrogations": Right-Wingers Eagerly Embrace Soviet Torture Methods

Today we're going to show how the right-wing is playing directly out of the Soviet Union playbook. That should be something to throw in their face, huh?Nothing, probably not even the Iraq War itself, has soured world opinion on the United States, as much as the Bush administration's embrace of torture.Actually, something probably has: the Bush administration's denial of that embrace, and its attempt to redefine what constitutes torture, and call what they're doing enhanced or alternative interrogation techniques.I've always been under the impression -- and maybe I've been hoodwinked about this, I'm curious if you've been under this impression as well -- I've always been under the impression that our intelligence agencies developed these alternative interrogation techniques specifically to be able to make the dubious claim, that they don't torture. In other words, we wanted to be able to assert that these are good old-fashioned American, high tech, humane, proper methods of interrogating prisoners that fully comply with the Geneva Conventions, the anti-torture treaty, and all other applicable domestic and international human rights obligations. How could anyone dare to challenge these methods, when we thought them up just to avoid torturing people?Well, here's a bombshell for you to drop on your friendly local right-winger.We didn't develop these techniques at all. They come straight from the KGB, the Cold War Soviet Union's secret police. It turns out, that the right-wing has been defending, endorsing, even singing the praises of, Evil Empire torture techniques. As confirmed by a recently declassified report by the Defense Department's own inspector general, the Bushians "reverse engineered" the Soviet techniques for use by American interrogators. For all the details, listen to the podcast.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 97 - Listeners Sound Off About How Right-Wing Road Safety Policies Endanger Us All

Today we'll follow up on an earlier podcast about how the Bush administration is putting you at risk on the roads, in the area of safety regulations applicable to truck driversThe listener comments we'll go over will provide yet more evidence that putting profit before the public good, is the right-wing way.Safety group and insurance industry research shows thatAfter 8 hours of consecutive driving, crashes increase dramatically, and even more steeply in the 10th and 11th hours of consecutive driving. But the right-wingers at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration went in the opposite direction. That agency increased the maximum continuous driving time from 10 to 11 hours. Here's Pete from the UK:Wow! (peter)Those driving regulations you have in the States are outrageous. I drive a coach in the UK for a big corporate transport company. The most hours I can drive under European rules, without a break is 4 hours 30 minutes. I must then have a 45 minute break. If you've been the driver on a long trip, you know the difference between 4-1/2 hours at a stretch, and 11! That 45 minute break makes all the difference in the world.Europe: 4-1/2 hours at a stretch. US: 11 hours. Here's what I think is the worst of all:The most I can do in 2 weeks is 90 The right-wingers in control of the federal agency upped the US limit to 88 hours. Less than the Europeans? Not on your life. That's 88 hours in 8 days. What European truck drivers must take 2 weeks to drive, American truck drivers can marathon-drive in 8 days.8 days vs. 14 days. Are European truck drivers weaklings, or US drivers supermen and superwomen…(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 96 - Right-Wing Charity: Sufficient Atonement For Their Sins?

A change of pace today. Not a lot of numerical stats and percentages, but some political and moral theory. We'll delve into three interrelated subjects: --the value of charity--right-wing charity vs. the consequences of their public policies, and--liberal vs. progressive prescriptions for a better world. My friend Jeff from gopexposed.com left a comment a while back containing a couple of points. We'll use Jeff's comments as a springboard for today's discussion. In two instances, Jeff had a misimpression of what I said. Maybe I wasn't clear or emphatic enough. Others may have had similar misimpressions. So it'll be good for me to clear those items up now as well. The bottom line is: whatever good conservatives do with charitable giving, is far more than offset by the public policies they support, which cause a level of increased human misery, suffering, pain and death far in excess of any charitable benefaction conservatives are capable of.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 95 - Latin American Right-Wing Reaps What It Sows: No-Nonsense Land Reform In Venezuela

Today we're going to discuss another major step towards achieving economic and social justice in Venezuela: no-nonsense land reform that allows malnourished, hungry people to grow food to feed themselves and their families. And, we'll learn what it really takes to be in solidarity with the Third World poor. Taking back the fertile farmland in Venezuela from the multinationals and the local elites, is just like taking back Bolivia's natural gas industry, and just like taking back Venezuela's oil industry, from the multinationals and the local elites.Lisbeth Colmenares, 22, was radiant as she showed a visitor her new home here, where she and her family live rent-free.“Before Chávez, the government would have been happy to let us starve,” said Ms. Colmenares, holding her 6-month-old daughter, Luzelis. “We’ll never let what we have now be taken from us.”The state and federal government holds Bella Vista as an example of the ideological fervor Mr. Chávez is trying to instill in the countryside. It is just such a change in consciousness among the average citizenry, that is the right's greatest fear. This is unthinkable to them. As you would expect, the land owners are furiously fighting back.Listen to the podcast for the details of the battle, including audio clips from impoverished Venezuelans now emboldened to take control of their own destiny.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 94 - Progressive Victory! Maryland Enacts First Living Wage Requirement For State Government Contracts

Maryland has passed the first statewide living wage statute.Under the law, employers with state contracts will generally have to pay workers a minimum amount — $11.30 an hour in the Baltimore-Washington corridor and $8.50 an hour in the rural counties, where wages and prices are usually lower.Among those workers mostly likely to be lifted above the poverty line by this measure are those who work for employers providing janitorial, landscaping, security, parking attendant and food services.Getting this living wage bill passed was a titanic effort extending over a 10 year period.I wonder if you'll find some of the things said by the bill's supporters, as inspiring as I did. For example, Governor Martin O'Malley:What this bill simply says is, 'If you're working on a contract funded by the people of Maryland, we are going to treat you in a fair and just way so you can put food on the table for your family after a day's work.'...Let's now go on to debunk right-wing talking points on this issue...Please listen to the podcast for all the details.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 93 - Food Workers' Lungs Destroyed: Another Case Study In How Right-Wing Policies Increase Human Misery, Suffering, Pain And Death

Today, we're going to discuss another example of the right-wing letting their ideology trump science, and in the process, increase human misery, suffering, pain and death. It concerns...microwave popcorn, of all things. You wouldn't think manufacturing popcorn would be a dangerous job, that could severely injure, or even kill you. Well, think again. And what about you, eating that popcorn? Has the right allowed some hidden danger to remain in the finished product? Here's an overview of what we'll talk about today:Seven years ago, a Missouri doctor discovered a troubling pattern at a microwave popcorn plant in the town of Jasper. After an additive was modified to produce a more buttery taste, nine workers came down with a rare, life-threatening disease that was ravaging their lungs.Puzzled Missouri health authorities turned to two federal agencies in Washington. Scientists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which investigates the causes of workplace health problems, moved quickly to examine patients, inspect factories and run tests. Within months, they concluded that the workers became ill after exposure to diacetyl, a food-flavoring agent. But the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, charged with overseeing workplace safety, reacted with far less urgency. It did not step up plant inspections or mandate safety standards for businesses, even as more workers became ill. To find out more, including how the Bush administration is eviscerating OSHA across the board and putting millions of workers in various industries across the nation at risk, listen to the podcast.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. About half of Americans advocate heavy taxation of the rich in order to redistribute wealth Wow! 90 - Shameless Right-Wing Greed: How Vulture Funds Prey On Impoverished Third World Nations

Today we're going to discuss an incredibly immoral way to make huge sums of money: vulture funds which prey on destitute Third World nations. As you might imagine, there's a strong right-wing connection.First I'll give you an overview of the vulture fund process. Next we'll go over some specific examples of vulture funds in action. Finally we'll discuss the right-wing connection to all this, aside from the obvious element of unbridled, unconcerned-with-moral-implications greed. The overview. In the Third World debt arena, vulture fundsare companies which buy up the debt of poor nations cheaply when it is about to be written off, then sue for the full value of the debt plus interest.According to investigative reporter Greg Palast, "political muscle" and "bribery" are also employed by the vulture funds to secure the money they seek.As you can imagine, any money collected by the vulture fund is that much less funding for education, health care, nutrition programs, or other efforts by a Third World government to improve the lives of their poor majority.Gordon Brown is the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, akin to our Secretary of the Treasury. Speaking to the UN in 2002, he declared:We particularly condemn the perversity where vulture funds purchase debt at a reduced price and make a profit from suing the debtor country to recover the full amount owed - a morally outrageous outcome.Let's go on to some specific examples. A vulture fund preying on Zambia has been in the news lately...For all the rest of the details, including how George W. 89 - Right-Wingers Can Be Proud: 2005 Saw The Greatest Income Inequality Since The Great Depression / Listen To McCain's Descent Into Delusion

As a general rule of thumb, everything right-wingers do is designed to accomplish one of two goals: either (a) transfer wealth to the already-rich from everyone else, or (b) distract everyone else from the fact that (a) is occurring. As far as (a), transfer wealth to the rich from everyone else, the right-wingers are succeeding probably beyond even their wildest expectations.Figures just released show that in 2005 income inequality continued to grow, by leaps and bounds. The richest 1% of Americans took home 21.8 percent of all reported income, up from 19.8 in 2004.The really significant number is, this is more than double their share of the national income in 1980.The richest 1% of Americans doubled their share of the nation's earnings since 1980. Guess what happened in 1981? Right-wing icon Ronald Reagan took office. Not a coincidence, not a coincidence.I'm sure the right-wingers are not quite satisfied, however, because the highest share for the top 1% was 23.9 percent in 1928, the year before the Great Depression. So c'mon right-wingers, you still have work to do to set the all-time record for greed.Regarding John McCain, I've assembled several clips of him and others speaking about his visit to the Iraqi market, and its aftermath. McCain's misrepresentation of the security situation in Bagdhad is typical right-wing lying or self-delusion, sometimes it's hard to tell which.Towards the end of the podcast you'll also hear the details about the next Blast The Right Live Call-In show, Monday, April 16, 10 pm EST.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 88 - Listen To A Progressive Third World Leader Tell Us In His Own Words The Truth Our Mass Media Ignores

Today we're going to hear a progressive Third World leader in his own voice. Throughout Latin America, the impoverished masses, who sometimes constitute on outright majority of their nations' populations, are rising up and electing progressive leaders. These progressive leaders promise to rule in the interests of the majority, not a small elite super-wealthy group at the top. And that's just what these progressive leaders are doing, much to the consternation -- and public whining, ranting and raving -- of both local and US right-wingers.One such progressive leader is Evo Morales of Bolivia. He was elected in a landslide in December 2005. Since then, he has delighted the poor majority in Bolivia, with his pro-social justice measures. In this podcast you'll hear excerpts from an interview of Morales conducted by Amy Goodman on her wonderful Democracy Now program.Morales laments past US violence against his nation, and explains his administration's current efforts to end centuries of exploitation by the West.In addition to the theme of the Third World poor taking power and achieving economic justice, we'll note some sub-themes.They are: as in the past, so in the present. 86 - Iraq's New Oil Law: Proof That Bush's War IS Blood For Oil

U.S. government pre-war planning documents stated that the new Iraqi government would have to privatize its oil industry. The Iraq Study Group said the same thing after the war.The new Iraqi oil law just unveiled would do just that:A new oil law set to go before the Iraqi Parliament this month would, if passed...transform Iraq’s oil industry from a nationalized model closed to American oil companies except for limited (although highly lucrative) marketing contracts, into a commercial industry, all-but-privatized, that is fully open to all international oil companies. It does so to the benefit of the companies, but to the great detriment of Iraq’s economy, democracy and sovereignty. [T]he law’s...provisions...allow much (if not most) of Iraq’s oil revenues to flow out of the country and into the pockets of international oil companies. It's a radical departure not only from Iraq's existing structure but from how oil is managed in most of the world today. We overthrew the Iranian government in 1953 to get Iranian oil back into multinational hands, and a half century later, in 2003, we overthrew the Iraqi government to get Iraqi oil back into multinational hands. And, I would add, to establish permanent military bases in Iraq.Just as our actions in Iran caused massive resentment there and led to a takeover of that country a quarter century later by hard-line Islamic radicals, our actions in effectively grabbing Iraq's oil, will similarly produce results we won't like, and probably in far less time. And note: getting back Iran's oil -- once again -- is next on the Bushian agenda.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. For a couple of examples, check out my year-end podcast 74, where I review some of the worst things the right-wing did in 2006 as covered by Blast The Right. Included among their gifts to America in 2006 were increased poverty, mining deaths, cancer and lung disease. As I discussed in podcast 79, George Bush's proposal to improve our health care system, which he still runs around shamelessly promoting, leaves 90% of the problem unsolved. There are 47 million Americans without health care coverage. By the White House's own admission, George Bush's plan will at most cover about 1 in 10 of them. How does the public feel about that?We have some fresh data on this, from a New York Times, CBS News poll. It was conducted February 23-27.A majority of Americans say the federal government should guarantee health insurance to every American, especially children, and are willing to pay higher taxes to do it, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.Heartening, huh? What you'll hear in the rest of this podcast will show how the right-wing is truly the loony fringe right, and we supposedly loony left progressives are not so loony after all, but supported by strong majority sentiment. Please listen to the podcast for the details.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 83- Lying Or Just Plain Ignorant? Bill O'Reilly Misleads His Audience, Part 2: Poverty

Today, we're going to have installment two of our series, Lying Or Just Plain Ignorant? Bill O'Reilly Misleads His Audience. The subject is poverty.O'Reilly recently had as a guest Rev. Fred Candeler, of the Methodist Federation for Social Action. Rev. Candeler was objecting to plans to place George W. Bush's presidential library at Southern Methodist University. Candeler said one of the reasons was that Bush's economic policies violate Methodist social teachings on poverty.O'Reilly challenged him by asserting:[audio clip] Poverty is very low in the United States. It stands at below 10%. Even those who are poor have the basic staples of life, most of them, unless they're addicted or mentally ill. What's the problem with the president's economic policies, which have really been very successful, particularly after 9/11.Amazing how in less than 50 words, O'Reilly can pack in so much disinformation. An unsuspecting member of O'Reilly's audience would come away from this believing that poverty in the United States is under 10%, that we have a very low poverty rate, and that Bush's economic policies have been very successful in this area.In this podcast, we thoroughly debunk O'Reilly and establish that:--the US poverty rate is not under 10% but 12.6%--Bush's economic policies have been a dismal failure in this area because every year poverty has gone up under Bush, except for the one year it stayed the same, and that extreme poverty has set a record high under Bush's regime--tens of millions of Americans are increasingly at risk for falling into poverty, and--the US poverty rate is not low, but is higher than virtually every other industrialized nation in the worldWe'll also discuss the noxious right-wing doctrine of Social Darwinism. Please listen to the podcast for the details.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 82 - Third World Land Reform Would Allow Hungry People To Feed Themselves: Another Social Justice Measure The Right-Wing Tries To Kill

Today we're going to pick up from a few podcasts ago, and discuss another example of a Third World nation's people fighting for their very lives. It's yet another chapter in the book of global economic justice. Bolivian President Evo Morales proposed a sweeping land reform bill, to ensure that like his nation's other national resource, natural gas, Bolivia's fertile lands would be utilized for the benefit of all Bolivians, not just for the benefit of a relative handful of large landowners.Land reform would allow small farmers to feed themselves, and grow affordable food for impoverished Bolivians, who constitute a majority of that nation.Morales started small. He gavepoor farming communities some 8,500 square miles of government land. But then Morales proposed legislation that would eventually allow his government to redistribute some 77,000 square miles of unproductive land.Morales has said the government will not seize productive land, but rather large tracts of Bolivia's sparsely populated east held by a handful of wealthy families. What, social justice for the poor? This can't be allowed to happen. The right-wing opposition did everything it could to kill the measure. Then things became, shall we say, interesting. Can you imagine the sound of thousands of feet marching down from the impoverished Bolivian highlands?Listen to the podcast for the details of what happened next.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. 81 - Cons Try To Con Us About Con Law: Bush/Cheney Claim About Unfettered Presidential War Powers Is Totally Bogus

Today we're going to discuss the phony claim by George Bush and Dick Cheney that Bush has unfettered power to wage war in Iraq -- and one assumes elsewhere -- as he sees fit. Congressional oversight? Surely you jest.In law school you usually take at least a beginning course in constitutional law. The subject is often referred to as con law. The situation with Bush and Cheney thus can be described as cons trying to con us about con law. You'll hear my first ever interview of a right-winger, a fairly prominent commentator. On this topic, it's a friendly conversation. Intrigued? The bottom line is, war powers are subject to the same balance of power between the branches as everything else in the Constitution. The Constitution’s drafters were intent on balancing power so no one branch could drift toward despotism. The system of checks and balances that runs through the document divides the war power between the president and Congress. We'll establish the ironclad validity of this proposition by examining 4 areas: 1. the text of the Constitution2. the intent of the founding fathers3. Supreme Court decisions, and4. historical precedentListen to the podcast for the details.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first. Make sure your seat belt is securely fastened. For example, let's take the wealthiest 1/10 of one percent of all Americans. There are 130,500 such taxpayers. They have more income than the 120 million Americans at the bottom.Nice, huh?How about wealth? The 400 richest Americans are all billionaires.Would you believe that they have as much wealth as the entire bottom half of the nation?Yes, these 400 families have as much wealth as 57 million other American families. And globally, the situation is even worse.Listen to the podcast for more details.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first, and don't respond just on the basis of the brief written summary above. 80 - Right-Wing Heaven: Bush IRS Twists Rules To Let Corporations Get Away With Tax Evasion

Today we're going to discuss yet another way the Bush administration is continuing to push its radical right agenda even without control of Congress. In this case, it's the emasculate the government, cut taxes on the wealthy agenda. All accomplished through some until-now hidden workings of the Internal Revenue Service.I'll tell you up front that this isn't a page-1-headline-type story. But it's a very useful story for understanding broadly used, standard issue right-wing tactics, and for learning how to debunk and effectively counter right-wing propaganda, regarding issues even substantively unrelated to tax collection.Every year the IRS is supposed to audit a sampling of large corporations to determine whether they are following the law and paying all the taxes they legitimately owe.Corporations paying all the taxes they legitimately owe? What kind of nonsense is that?In a policy begun by the Bush administration in 2003Top officials at the Internal Revenue Service are pushing agents to prematurely close audits of big companies with agreements to have them pay only a fraction of the additional taxes that could be collectedThis is according to dozens of IRS agents. Apparently, the IRS has adopted quite a strange approach to conduct investigations:Auditors said they were told to limit questioning only to those specific issues that the I.R.S. and the companies had agreed in advance to examine. When other questionable deductions emerged in the course of the audit… additional taxes were ignored. Oh, I get it, the subject of the investigation has to agree to be investigated about something, before the IRS will investigate that issue. It gets much worse. 78 - Case Study, Ecuador: Listen To Martin Luther King And Learn How To Get On The Correct Side Of The World Revolution

Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed on April 4, 1967:A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and see individual capitalists of the West investing huge sums of money in Asia, Africa, and South America, only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries, and say, "This is not just." It will look at our alliance with the landed gentry of South America and say, "This is not just."Martin Luther King understood that we and the other Western nations need to radically change our behavior all over the world, including South America.Today we'll discuss one such place in South America where we progressives need to make America stand on the correct side of the world revolution -- or more realistically, at least prevent our country from actively supporting the wrong side. That place is Ecuador. You may be thinking, Ecuador? Who knows anything about that country?Exactly what I would have said, a short time ago. Just like a relatively short time ago, very few of us knew the difference between a Shiite and a Sunni. 75 - Highway Deaths Continue Because Right-Wing Policies (As Usual) Fail

Today, we're going to start off the new year with some new evidence -- as if you really needed any more -- that right-wing policies cause increased human misery, suffering, pain and death. This example concerns thousands of unnecessary highway deaths from accidents involving large trucks.Safety advocacy groups, along with the insurance industry, presented studies showing that tired truck drivers caused a high percentage of accidents. But trucking company associations countered with their own statistics that supposedly proved it was passenger cars that caused more than 80 percent of the accidents, fatigued truckers being responsible for only 2 percent. The federal agency, filled with right-wing Bush appointees, adopted the trucking industry position. In April 2003, as modified in 2005, the agency increased the maximum continuous driving time from 10 to 11 hours. This is even though the better research shows that After 8 hours of consecutive driving, crashes increase dramatically, and even more steeply in the 10th and 11th hours of consecutive driving. Are they crazy? The continuous driving rules hadn't been changed since the 1930's. Just think of it: what kind of safety rules haven't been toughened since the 1930's? But the Bush administration not only doesn't toughen them, it loosens them! For more details, and to hear a debunking of the ludicrous justifications offered by the right, listen to the entire podcast!

76 - Market As Deity: Reflections On The Right-Wing's Golden Calf

Today we're going to have a wide-ranging discussion of that totally misleading economic term so beloved by the right, the "free market." By the time we're finished, you'll never hear the phrase "free market" the same way again. One of the more exasperating things when speaking to a right-winger, is that virtually no matter what subject you're talking about, if you're making good points and the right-winger has nothing to say, they'll resort to their old standby, all-purpose answer to anything: the free market. They'll accuse you of subverting the free market. The free market this, and the free market that. The free market will cure this problem, the free market will cure that problem. What brilliant marketing. Who could be against a free market? What, do you want an unfree market, an enslaved market? We're going to look at this rebranding of right-wing economics from a variety of different angles. Some are hifalutin' theory, others down and dirty, in-the-trenches experiential. I hope everyone will hear something in this podcast to grab onto and use it to speak truth to power the next time a right-winger is standing in front of you, pulling their "free market" schtick. The bottom line of this entire podcast is:First, there never was a free market, and there isn't one now.Second, even if there were, the results such a free market -- or any market -- produces, are not something we’re compelled to accept as holy writ. We'll show how our "free market" in this country is, in reality, a complex, government created, pro-corporate market structure. We'll review some of the unacceptable results that occur when this pro-corporate structure is allowed to function without progressive interventions. And finally, we'll delve a bit into the moral and philosophical edifice that the right has erected to justify their free market sham.(PS: Right-wingers, if you want to write in to me, fine, but at least do me the courtesy of listening to the podcast first, and don't respond just on the basis of the brief written summary above)

53 - Battling Phony Right-Wing Christians: What Every Progressive Needs To Know About True Christian Economics

Possibly the largest and most organized, disciplined and effective opposition to the progressive agenda is the religious right. If you're a progressive, you need to be familiar with true Christian economics, to be able to articulate how far from being in accord with Christian values, right-wing policies truly are.You have to be able to put right-wing Christians on the defensive. Some of you may be saying to yourself, I don't want to hear a bunch of religious crap, or any hi-falutin', esoteric theology. No no no. That's not what you're going to hear. You're going to hear progressive economics 101, radical economics even, dare I say bedrock human morality.I have distilled Catholic social doctrine into eight overarching principles. Here is a preview:1. The world's resources were meant for all to share equitably, so that each individual and people have a sufficient share2. The market alone can not address all human needs, and its shortcomings need to be addressed3. The existence of unjust political and economic structures must be recognized4. Demonization of the poor is wrong5. We must exercise a "preferential option for the poor"6. Concrete actions to help the poor, not pious wishes, are required7- Individual acts of charity are not enough, social political and economic policies must be addressed; and finally8- These social justice principles and the preferential option for the poor, apply internationally as well, and therefore fundamental changes in global economic structures and practices are necessary. As part of this presentation, you'll hear clips of various right-wingers who claim to be Christians, espousing positions diametrically opposed to their own religion's values. Pay special attention to the Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity clips, since they are both self-professed devout Catholics, and therefore what I'll be presenting is the official, mandatory teaching of their own church, the one they claim allegiance to, and the one they eagerly trash every day.Listen to this podcast and learn how to effectively counter right-wing Christians!

74 - Year-End Review Of Some Right-Wing Gifts To America In 2006: Poverty / Class Warfare / War Profiteering / Mining Deaths / Cancer / Lung Disease

This last podcast of the year will be a review of some of the worst things the right-wing did in 2006 as covered by Blast The Right. Here's how I put together my list. You know I often say that right-wing policies inevitably cause increased human misery, suffering, pain and death. I don’t think I've every explained exactly what the components of that phrase mean to me.Misery and suffering I associate with the increased poverty and general economic deprivation produced by right-wing economic measures.Pain and death refers to the actual physical pain and dying that is caused both by poverty, and more directly, by right-wing policies that lead to war, and that fail to protect against environmental hazards and fatal diseases. Now, it's hard to quantify evil, saying one type of right-wing-caused increase in human misery, suffering, pain and death is worse that another type of right-wing-caused increase in human misery, suffering, pain and death.Obviously in terms of sheer magnitude, Bush's continuing slaughterhouse in Iraq would be number one.Since on this podcast I like to give you a perspective not found on the mainstream media, I've limited my Worst of 2006 List to items that were terribly underreported, if reported at all, in the mass media.I've selected three in each category of damage. First we'll do the misery and suffering, economic deprivation category. Then we'll go on to the physical pain and death examples of the right-wing in action. When you're at family gatherings and other festive occasions during this holiday season and right-wing blather rears its ugly head, this week's podcast will give you a smorgasbord to choose from to throw back at the right-winger who's spouting the right's usual nonsense.

Could it be because the right's actions and policy proposals prove they don't believe the words coming out of their own mouths about the war on terror? This summer, no doubt in desperate hope of scaring up a majority of GOP voters for the midterm elections, the right-wing rolled out its "World War III" propaganda effort. The public was not bamboozled, not stampeded into voting for the GOP to save them from World War III.We'll discuss why, and then suggest an effective way to counter any future such hyperbolic rhetoric from the right.

72 - The Upcoming Minimum Wage Battle: How To Counter Right-Wing Propaganda

The Democrats have proclaimed that before 100 hours have gone by in the new Congress this January, they will, among other things, raise the Federal minimum wage. The bill, which has been languishing for years in the right-wing controlled Congress, is called the Fair Minimum Wage Act. It provides for three hikes: from the present $5.15 to $5.85 sixty days after enactment; to $6.55 one year later, which would be in 2008; and then to $7.25 a year after that, in 2009.A critical element of any progressive agenda, of any social justice agenda, is raising the federal minimum wage. No single action could lift more people out of poverty as quickly. And it benefits more than just minimum wage workers. Because there is a rippling upward effect, it will also help those who earn above the minimum but are still in poverty. The right will advance all sorts of phony arguments about why raising the minimum wage is a bad idea. We'll examine three of the main ones.First would be, that if you raise the minimum wage, it will result in fewer minimum wage jobs, that some of those now employed at the minimum wage will lose their jobs...For more, listen to the podcast! 70 - Was There Right-Wing Electronic Voting Fraud In The Midterms? Dispute In Florida's 13th Congressional District Provides The Answer

Ok, we had the midterm election, and there was apparently no nationwide right-wing electronic voting fraud sufficient to tip the scales to the Republicans, since the Democrats, thank goodness, did succeed in taking back both houses of Congress.I've been wondering, however, was there Republican voting fraud of the electronic variety, just not enough? And, what does this midterm election portend for the integrity of the vote in the 2008 Presidential and other contests?Let's examine these questions through the prism of what's now transpiring in Florida's 13th Congressional District. This story hasn't gotten a heck of lot of national attention, but it's important to be aware of this situation, because of what it says about the national prognosis for free and fair elections. There are 18,000 votes missing in Sarasota County. 18,000 Sarasota voters who chose candidates in other races, supposedly didn't vote, didn't make a choice, in this Congressional contest. These so-called undervotes all occurred on electronic touch screen voting machines made by the Election Systems & Software company. And would have easily provided the winning margin to Democrat Jennings. How do we know these two things, that there are missing votes, and that those missing votes would have favored Jennings?Listen to the podcast and find out.

69 - Big Victory Against Right-Wing In Struggle To End Debt Slavery Of Third World Nations

Today we'll discuss another example of good news on the international economic justice front. It comes in the form of a powerful kick in the teeth against the Third World debt scam that's been perpetrated against the poorest nations on earth for all too many years. Many of these indebted nations are forced to spend far more on repaying these loans, than on health care and education and other needs of their people.A worldwide movement is trying to achieve the reduction or even complete cancellation of Third World debt made under "odious" circumstances. Prominent figures supporting this effort range from Bono to the late Pope John Paul II.An unprecedented admission by Norway that it made illegitimate loans it shouldn't have, may well lay the groundwork for the odious debt doctrine to become an effective weapon for those campaigning to cancel these illegitimate Third World debts.Norway's admission of wrongdoing in lending the money is, unfortunately, in stark contrast to the continued refusal of other First World creditor nations to admit wrongdoing. These denials seem absurd when you consider some of the actual loans in question.Listen to the podcast for more details! He gave foreign companies 180 days to turn over a majority stake in their Bolivian operations, or leave the country. For decades, most of the profits from Bolivia's natural resources had gone into the pockets of foreign multinationals, while the majority of Bolivia's people lived in dire poverty. Morales said no more.Despite widespread condemnation and naysaying by right-wing forces, Bolivia has prevailed: the companies have now agreed to its demands.Another nail in the coffin of the right-wing international economic agenda.

67 - Right-Wing Plots To Reverse Post-Enron Anti-Corporate Fraud Reforms, Even Without Control Of Congress

Most of you are familiar with the many recent corporate and accounting scandals, with Enron, Tyco and Worldcom among the most notorious. In response to these events, even the right-wing controlled Congress felt compelled to act, and they passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act is one of the pieces of legislation that the SEC enforces, with these purposes: truthful disclosure by corporations, and honest dealing by brokers and others who sell and trade securities. The right-wing, which advocates and rules in the interests of the richest Americans, is not happy with Sarbanes-Oxley. They don’t want more protection for the general public.More protection means the public will keep more of its wealth, instead of losing it to the already too-rich in Enron-type schemes. How can right-wingers continue to increase the share of the nation's wealth owned by the richest among us, if the public has all these Sarbanes-Oxley protections?Such a concern has led the right wing to openly plot not only to reverse Sarbanes-Oxley post-Enron reforms, but even to go beyond that, and develop plans to jettison decades-old rights in the financial arena that the public has enjoyed.Since the right knew it might lose Congress, all of this has been fashioned so that it can be accomplished without Congressional approval. Also: a correction to last week's podcast concerning what position "Death Squad John" Negroponte currently holds.

Right-wingers claim that there is a war on religion in this country. The fact is:[S]ince 1989...more than 200 special arrangements, protections or exemptions for religious groups or their adherents were tucked into Congressional legislation, covering topics ranging from pensions to immigration to land use. New breaks have also been provided by a host of pivotal court decisions at the state and federal level, and by numerous rule changes in almost every department and agency of the executive branch. One result is that religious institutions participating in essentially secular business ventures now enjoy financial and other advantages over their secular competitors. And, a greater tax burden falls on ordinary citizens. In this and other ways we'll discuss, churches and other religious bodies are being elevated into a superior position over the rest of the nation.Next: The latest poll confirms that right-wingers continue to be totally out of step with mainstream America on many issues, the minimum wage and the federal drug benefit being two of them. Finally: A Florida listener alerts us to a blatant right-wing attempt to block effective vote fraud monitoring in that state.

64 - Will Your Vote In The Crucial Midterm Election Be Erased -- Or Even Flipped -- By Right-Wing Electronic Voting Machine Fraud?

Today, I'm going to address some issues related to the upcoming midterm elections, including the history of, and likelihood of continued, right-wing electronic voting machine fraud. There is nothing going on in this country more important politically, than to take back from the Republicans at least one, and preferably both, houses of Congress, in the midterm elections just a few weeks away. The Democrats may not do anything terrifically positive after they take back one or both houses, but they also probably won't do anything horrifically negative, as a Congress that remains fully in Republican hands, certainly will. For our sake here at home, and for the sake of the Third World poor and whoever else the Bushians will bomb and mass murder if given another unfettered two years, it's critical we put a roadblock in their way, by taking back at least one House of Congress. Now you may be thinking, well, Jack's correct there, and happily, the polls all look pretty damn good at this point.Yes they do, but don't let that deceive you!The polls mean nothing, if the votes aren't counted accurately. And there is a great chance the votes won't be counted accurately. There is a great chance there will be massive electronic voting fraud that keeps the Republicans in power, in both Houses. You may go vote against Bush and the GOP, but your vote may then be electronically disappeared, or worse yet, flipped into a pro-Bush vote. How'd you like your vote to help keep the Republicans in power?!Of course you don't want that to happen.Let me tell you what I'm talking about. It all has to do with electronic touch screen voting machines.Details in the podcast! The so-called Southern Strategy begun under Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan's entire political career, are two such examples. The latest effort takes the form of the voter ID laws the right is currently pushing. We hear the Falwells and the Robertsons ad nauseam, but thankfully, some progressive Christian leaders are beginning to speak out and be heard. 59 - Part II Of Critically Important But Largely Unreported Aspects Of The Iraq War: The Bremer Orders (The Attempted Economic Rape of Iraq)

Today we're going to present Part II of the series, Critically Important But Largely Unreported Aspects of the Iraq War. What we'll discuss in this podcast are the Bremer Orders. These are laws promulgated by so-called Coalition Provisional Authority head Paul Bremer when he was running Iraq for the Bush administration. These laws, as those of you familiar with right-wingers may suspect, were not exactly designed for the benefit of the Iraqi people. Quite the contrary. The Bremer Orders imposed neo-liberal (a misnomer, since they're extreme right-wing) economic policies on Iraq: shrink the government, privatize services, slash taxes, put the country's assets up for sale, and throw open the economic borders by doing away with all tariffs. The goal was to open up Iraq to multinational corporate exploitation. The result was not what the Bush administration expected.Tune in for the details of this further example of right-wing evildoing.

58 - Critically Important But Largely Unreported Aspects Of The Iraq War, Part I: The Right-Wing "Project For A New American Century" (PNAC)

Today we're going to present Part I of what will be at least a 3-part series, Critically Important But Largely Unreported Aspects of the Iraq War. The first subject we'll address is, the neocon organization called Project for a New American Century, known as PNAC. This will make your hair stand on end.A major issue in the midterm elections, just about 2 months away, will of course be Iraq. One of the progressive understandings that often gets short shrift in the media, is that the Iraq War is not a noble effort based on unfortunately faulty intelligence, or a good mission poorly executed. No, progressives understand that the Iraq War was something lusted after for years before 9/11 by the neocons, and in order to lay the appropriate level of blame and, yes, criminal responsibility where it belongs, this needs to be understood. In short: these brazen PNAC neocons announced their goal to maintain US global domination, lobbied for that goal years before 9/11, and then when they took power in Washington, actually implemented the invasion and occupation of Iraq as the first step towards achieving that goal. But whenever the charge is leveled that the Iraq War was one planned long before 9/11 and that 9/11 just served as an excuse, right-wingers always claim there is no evidence of that.Wrong. There's dispositive evidence. PNAC provides the foundation to prove that 9/11 was consciously used by the Bush administration as an excuse to invade Iraq -- Iraq was not a misguided or misdirected result of 9/11.With the Fall elections in mind, one of the linchpins of proving that Bush hyped and even lied about the intelligence, is to provide this motive: that he was just looking for an excuse to execute a decision made long before -- to go to war against Iraq, to invade and occupy that nation. The words and actions of the group PNAC could well push fence-sitting centrists over the line, into full appreciation of the real reasons behind the Iraq War.

52 - Right-Wing Wages War On State Environmental And Health Safeguards

Right-wingers are traditionally strong proponents of the states rights doctrine, which holds that the federal government should play a limited role and defer to the states whenever it can.Right-wingers, however, have no principles, and when it suits their needs, they will readily abandon such supposedly sacred ideological tenets as states rights. And that's just what they have been doing.Ever since January, 2001, right-wingers have jettisoned the state's rights doctrine when it suits their needs -- as you might expect, for nefarious purposes, to guarantee higher industry profits at the expense of increased human misery, suffering pain and death. How? Right-wingers in Congress have conducted a massive assault on the right of the states to pass legislation to protect their citizens in the environmental and public health arenas. The states would want to pass their own legislation when they feel that federal statutes do not adequately protect their citizens, which of course they won't, when right-wingers are writing those statutes. So the GOP-controlled Congress has been trying to prevent the 50 states from passing any such legislation that goes beyond federal standards. This right-wing campaign is happening largely under the radar, even though the effect of this campaign could be deadly for countless Americans.Listen to the podcast for all the details.

49 - Venezuela As Prism: Bush, Chavez, Jesus & Oil

There are two things longtime listeners know I'm truly passionate about. One of them is economic justice, particularly as it relates to the oppression and exploitation of the Third World poor. In past podcasts we've discussed how the US and other Western industrialized nations have, since colonial times, economically enslaved Third World and developing nations, and still to this very day do their best to destroy whichever of them even hint at trying to throw off their chains. I've spoken often of Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, who is indeed now trying to throw off his nation's chains, and is accordingly being demonized by the right-wing.The other area I'm passionate about -- and haven't spoke enough about -- is the utter hypocrisy of right-wing Christians, who from the roots of their right-wing ideology to the fruits of their policies, violate the most fundamental of the teachings of Jesus regarding how we are to interact with our brother and sister humans. These teachings are most powerfully expressed in the 25th book of Matthew, verses 31-46, the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats. On Judgment Day, Jesus will gather the nations before him, the sheep on the right, the goats on the left. Judgment will be based on how they treated the hungry, the naked, the thirsty, the sick…the "least of these." It is in this parable that Jesus uttered the words "As you did it unto the least of these my brethren, you did it unto me." To those who pass the test, Jesus grants access to his Kingdom, to eternal life, to Heaven; those who do not pass the test, Jesus condemns to everlasting fire, to everlasting punishment, to Hell.Even if, like me, you are not a Christian, it is well worth being familiar with this passage, one of world spirituality's most extraordinary expressions of a fundamental moral truth concerning economic justice. (Podcasts 9 and 10 treat this subject in more depth.)Obviously my two passions are linked. One of the ways right-wing pseudo-Christians violate Matthew 25 is in their eager and violent oppression of the Third World.Well, I just came across a piece written by Gary Vance, who's an evangelical pastor and writer in rural Tennessee. It combines in a delicious way my two passions, economic justice for the Third World poor, and the Matthew 25-based hypocrisy of right-wing Christians. This theological reflection was published by commondreams.org, a must-go-to site for progressives. It will provide the springboard to examine my two passions through the prism of a present-day intersection of, and battleground over the two, Hugo Chavez's Venezuela.

46 - Attack On The Estate Tax: Right-Wing Lies And Greed In Plain Sight

Right-wingers in Congress are trying to repeal the estate tax. Fortunately, they failed last week. They fell 3 votes short of the 60 votes they needed to prevent a Democratic filibuster on the issue. Two Republicans, George Voinovich of Ohio and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, defied the GOP leadership and voted with the Democrats.Since the estate tax repeal was pushed by right-wingers, you've got to expect there were plenty of lies put forth about it in an attempt to gather support. Your expectations would be met. You've also got to expect that repeal of the estate tax would, as all right-wing measures, benefit not the majority of Americans, but only the richest. On that you'd be correct as well.I start today by debunking the three big lies about the estate tax repeatedly told by right-wingers, and then we get into the question of, what is it about repealing the estate tax that could compel the often-spineless Democrats to threaten a filibuster, and even induce some Senate Republicans to defy the White House?

45 - Right-Wing Policies Kill America's Coal Miners

I repeat quite often that right-wingers invariably cause increased human misery, suffering, pain and death. Today I'll present a perfect example of precisely the type of such havoc that ensues when right-wingers achieve power. We've recently witnessed the dual tragedies of the Sago mine explosion in January, which killed 12 West Virginia coal miners, and then the Harlan County mine explosion in May, which killed 5 Kentucky coal miners. Many of the miners survived the actual explosions, but died from lack of oxygen.Mine disasters happen, right? Nothing the right-wing did to help cause these, correct?Wrong. Right-wing actions have significantly increased the likelihood of mining disasters, and decreased the likelihood that miners will survive such incidents. There are four main areas where Bush administration actions have created conditions which inevitably lead to more disasters and lower survival rates for the miners: --cutting the budget, staff and enforcement efforts of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA); --appointing mining company executives to oversee their own industry; --opposing stronger mining safety and health regulations, even rolling back some of them--and last but not least, punishing MSHA employees who try to correct dangerous mining conditions. You'll hear interspersed throughout the podcast, family members of miners who were killed, along with the United Mine Workers union president and two Congressmen who are trying to legislate protection for the miners.
