MPAD#241 "I Love Lightning Bugs"

The past week flew by so fast for me I didn’t get a chance to blog so as part of the intro to this video I figured I’d put some thoughts down on new Fall TV shows I’ve seen. I had big expectations for Detroit 187, but the first episode was a underwhelming. It came across as a very formulaic cop drama set in Detroit. I might stick around for a few more episodes to see if it improves. Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s new big show, came on last week, and while I was impressed with parts of it, like the setting and characters. It introduced a few too many characters and felt like it might play better as a long movie. A show I really hated was The Defenders, I’m not even sure why I watched it. Some of the returning shows I really enjoyed were the season premiers of Smallville, Chuck and Gossip Girl. All 3 of these are off to great starts. This MPAD video episode features “I Love Lightning Bugs” who were formerly known as Lorem Ipsums. They mention their influences as are bands like the Pixies and Sonic Youth, but they kind of remind me of Pavement. I interviewed Rob, the bass player and Reid, the guitar/singer. They have a full length coming out in November and can be found on the indie band social website knerd. My affiliate for this episode is fleurop.com, also known as FTD. There’s always one reason or another to send flowers and fleurop.com makes it easy by delivery just about anywhere and making the selection easy. MPAD#240 "Common Grackle, OMD and More"

This week is the official week of TV premiers, so I'm sitting here watching the 2nd episode of 90210. Believe me I'm as surprised as you are that I'm sticking around for another year. Just call it another of my guilty pleasures. What's new on TV is just one of the few things I'm covering on this audio edition of Most People Are DJs. I've also got an amusing interview with Greg Pepper from Common Grackle, a duo that play mix of soulful hip hop and indie pop. A little over week ago I blogged about the return of OMD, on this episode I play a new song by them and do a little profile on their career that spans more than 30 years. And if you're still tuned in by the end of the show I give some clues about the host change on the ESPN Football Today podcast. ESPN Football Today podcast has gotten so bad I'm looking for a new football podcast - any suggestions? music - Kisses - Bermuda Common Grackle - TGIM (with Kool Keith) OMD - Sister Marie Says Blue Sky Black Death - Carl Sagan My affiliates for the show this week are Zazzle.com which is the place to go for all logo paraphernalia. MPAD#239 "Adams Castle"

It's another week for a video episode of Most People Are DJs. This week I am featuring the band, Adam's Castle, a trio from New York that play instrumental music. You might be thinking to yourself that seeing an instrumental band play live might be boring, but, just a few minutes seeing Adam's Castle play, you'lll be so captivated by how interesting and pulsating their sound is, a vocalist would just be an annoyance. Their sound is different than most other "alt-instrument" bands like Mogwai, in that most of AC's songs move along with movement changes and dynamic effects. If you dig any of what you hear on vidcast you need to go to their website and sign up for their exclusive info and songs from their upcoming album "Vices." This vidcast was all done using my Kodak Zi8 so you might notice some differences from my prior videos using the Flip. This episode is brought to you in part by Go Daddy where you can get a .com website domain for only $7.49 for the first year. Go Daddy is where I have all my domain names reserved and I have found their service to be outstanding. There are other ways to save at Go Daddy by using my other coupon codes located at my Go Daddy Mevio Coupons page. You can also see my other offers at my MPAD Mevio Coupons page. MPAD#238 "Fan Expo Massacre"

I spent my labor day laboring over this video episode of Most People Are DJs. Unlike most of my other videos that are documentaries, where you don't see or hear me in the video, I make an appearance in this video. In fact this video is all about me and the visual experience I had at fan expo. In addition to that, I am finally getting out the Birthday Massacre video I've been meaning to put together. I was fortunate enough to catch Rainbow and Michael from the band for a few minutes which I have included with some music from their upcoming CD, "Pin and Needles". If you have a minute check out their new video for "In the Dark". I also feature a couple of snippets from director Rob Stefaniuk of the Vampire movie "Suck" and Tim Doiron of "Gravy Train" which also features the very beautiful April Mullen. There's also come costume pics that I took at the con. I thought about nicking a bunch of photos from flicker, but I think that's cheating. You might notice a switch in the film as I've started using a Kodak Zi8 for my video which has replaced my flip. This episode is brought to you in part by my paid affiliate Zazzle.com which has so much cool logo stuff you won't believe what you can find or create with a logo on it. My t-shirt is from Comic Geek Speak and could have very well been created at Zazzle.com. MPAD#237 "Fighting the Crowd at Fan Expo"

It's getting late tonight and my goal is to get this show posted so here comes a bit of incoherent rambling...This episode has a ton of stuff I slapped together from my visit at FanExpo and a few other goodies that I think really make this a stand out episode of Most People Are DJs. I mentioned the big crowds at Fan Expo - here's some news on it. I made the best of my time at Fan Expo talking to people like Kirby Krackle and Embassy. I also talked to Ramon Perex of TX Comics which has a lot of cool web comics you should check out. I watched the movie Suck, which is a great little vampire rock band movie with tons of cameos by rocks stars. Even with the crowds, I had a great time and will definitely be back next year. I also talk a bit about the blog I did on bands from films I wish were real and play some music by my favorites. My affiliates for this episode include GoDaddy, which is the best place to get a website domain. My code DJ10 will get you a new .com website domain for only $7.95 and there are more deals here. When you need pet supplies the best place to go is Petco.com where you can save 10% by using the code MOST10. MPAD#236 "Brad Laner Interview, Michael Cera Profile"

On this week’s show I have an interview with Brad Laner, an artist who has a new album, Natural Selections, out August 24th, however, I know him from for all his great guitar work with bands like Lusk and Medicine. There's some Medicine vdieos on YouTube you should check out to hear some amazing shoegaze pop from the 90s. The conversation with Brad was actually almost a half hour, but I only used about 10minutes. Towards the end we were just talking about bands we like and I finally got around asking him if he heard any "Yes" in his music. Brad admitted he is a huge "Yes" which really made my day, alternative music fans that like Yes can be hard to come by. A weird coincidence I found out after I recorded the show is, the band Baths, which I play this show recently did a Brad Laner remix. One more stray fact about Michael Cera that I forgot to mention was he starred in an episode of Veronica Mars, one of the best teen shows ever made. The affiliates for this episode are emusic, where you can find tons of great music, including the new record from Arcade Fire. You can get 35 free tracks from them by going here. Also, if you have an anniversary coming up or maybe you just want to do something nice for somebody try sending flowers. MPAD#235 "Lacey Conner with Lords of Acid"

This is the long awaited interview documentary video episode with Lacey Conner of Lords of Acid. When my friend told me LoA were coming to town I remembered how much fun I had seeing them in the distant past. I also know LoA is a rotating line-up band with Praga Khan as the guiding force. The new lead singer for LoA is Lacey Conner, who you might have seen before on VH1’s Rock of Love. I decided to do a video with her because it was interesting to see an American with reality TV fame fronting LoA. Lacey was very down to earth and friendly to speak with, she was very accommodating throughout the interview even though she wasn’t feeling well. When Lacey takes the stage with LoA, as you can she in the video, her persona changes, she is fierce, aggressive and very sexy. Like my other video’s most of what you see was done using my ever-versatile flip camera. I am putting some extra work into my editing work so I hope you notice a more visually appealing video compared to some of my past shows. Lacy mentions on the video she is very involved with rescue dogs and I want to make sure I mention what an important and worthy cause supporting rescue dogs is. I have a rescue dog, Miley, a border collie/lab mix that is just the most awesome dog in the world. Not only do I have a great pet, I may have saved her from a painful life of dog shelters or worse. When I need pet supplies for Miley, she loves chew toys, I use my paid affiliate, Petco.com and save 10% by using the coupon code MOST10 to save 10% off any order. MPAD#234 "Focus On the Dopeness"

UFFIE - ADD SUV (feat . Pharrell Williams) HD from Uffie on Vimeo “Focus on the Dopeness” is taken from The Wackness, where woeful Luke’s object of attraction, Stephanie says to Luke he should “Stop focusing on the Wackness in his life and be like her, focus on the dopeness.” Did people really talk like that in 1994? I’m not even sure, but, I know what “wack” means. According to “the Wackness,” it means the confounded and inevitable negative things that are sure to occur in your life. Wack is actually a lot deeper than I would have ever thought. Maybe that’s what I’m looking for in this podcast. A show that seems like shallow escapism from your daily routine but actually poses something much deeper. So ponder that, as I talk about things that are going on with MPAD, play some “dope” music and review some things that have been swimming around my brain. While I’m on the subject of dope stuff, Most People Are DJs has some affiliates offering you crazy savings on great stuff. Zazzle is the place for you to personalize that t-shirt with your logo. Use the code mostpeople11 and you’ll save mad money, 10% on a purchase of more than $50. Or, reserve a web domain with GoDaddy, they are the king in web service biz. MPAD#233 "Liz From Lettercamp Video"

I'll talk about it on my podcast next week, but I'll let you know now that I spent a good part of this week working on making my basement a multimedia haven. I bought a HD TV, then updated my Sony Viao desktop to work with the TV and hooked it all up to a stereo surround system. It's pretty awesome. My next project is to create a little video recording space down there where I can do some video shows - and I may actually appear in them. For this this week's MPAD I've got a little video documentary with Liz afrom Lettercamp. Lettercamp's been playing for less than a year and they are quickly becoming a band to mark your calendar to see. The members come from some our our local scene's finest bands like Friendly Foes, Nice Device and Millions of Brazillians. Liz is the singer and Lettercamp started as her basement project. What's great about Liz is I don't think she realizes how talented she and Lettercamp are. The video was all done on my flip camera at the Crofoot on July 17, at the show where Robyn, who makes a cameo appearance in the video, played. At the end of the video, I mention the episode is sponsored by Zazzle which is a great place to get t-shirts and other logo paraphernalia from. If you're going to compare them to another company, I'd say Zazzle is like Cafe Press but much cooler. They have some DC 75th t-shirts at their sute that are just amazing. With my coupon code MostPeople10 you can save 10% at Zazzle when you buy $50 or more from their website, And, don't worry, you'll find plenty of stuff at their website to get you past $50 worth. MPAD#232 "Mikel and Paul Team Up!"

I should have went back and checked because I just discovered I hit my podasting for 5 years mark a few weeks ago, but it's this week I'm taking notice. The biggest thing I have gained from podcasting is a long list of friends I've made, some a re local Detroit Podcasting buddies, and others live a country away, like my friend Paul from Canada. We became fast friends because we share a lot in common, particularly our passion for comics, music, film and TV. Paul's a great talker on these subjects and we can sit for a couple of hours just riffing back and forth over the latest pop culture has to offer. And, yes, I meant to mention it in the closing of the episode, I make a big mistake at the very begining of the episode by saying this is episode 252 of Most People Are DJs when it was only 232! MPAD#231 "Electric Sunset, Blessed Out and Drowned In Reverb"

Like Snap said on that 90’s dance song “It’s getting, It’s getting, It’s getting kind of hectic!” My life got crazy busy this week – although that probably doesn’t justify me spouting off lyrics from a song we only hear a cheesy weeding receptions. Between a couple concerts, show interviews and family activities, I’ve barely had a moment's rest, but, I like to think that the more busy I get, the more productive I get. Here’s an episode of Most People Are DJs that features music, and interview and some skewed intellect. How’s that for packing in a show! And it’s almost 60 minutes long – that’s an extended show for me! Make sure you check out Electric Sunset, come September there’s going to be a lot of buzz him and you can say it’s old news to you. The thing with Wax is he could brag and have a big ego about some of the great projects he's involved with but instead he retains his modesty and good humor. MPAD#229 "Like A Chump"

When I'm putting together a podcast, there are times that I have a really good time talking to myself. That sounds a little strange, but I look at it almost like therapy or meditation. I take these things I come across over the past couple weeks, distill them to the few that I really think are interesting, then talk about why. The hope is always that, in the process, which I admit is completely selfish, there are people out there that enjoy listening to me do this thing as well. On this week's episode, I've got a sunburn, a little tired and maybe even slightly hungover. When I think back on the fun I had recording, maybe that's just the right mixture for recording a podcast. Or it could be my passion for the topics I'm discussing, music and movies. To be more specific, Devo and a little movie call the Education of Charlie Banks, plus some other things that have been bugging me lately like high concert ticket prices and rules for free MP3 downloads. music - Canasta - Mexico City Electric Sunset - Soda Devo - Fresh Wavves - Post Acid mentions - Fred Durst The Education of Charlie Banks Devo Time Interview Sponsors, here are my promo codes: Zazzle mostpeople10 - save 10% any order $50 or more GoDaddy!New Codes! One of my favorite ways to kick off summer is with some new tunes to that have, as Jonathan Richman would put it, “That Summer Felling” in them. MPAD#225 "Making Good On Film Threat"

Before I tell you a little bit about this episode of Most People Are DJs. I want to mention something that's been bugging me a bit lately. It's movie trailers that have parts of a movie that don't end up in the movie. My recent example is Iron Man 2 - which, by the way, is a good movie. In the trailer, there's a scene with Iron Man jumping off a roof, yelling to Pepper Potts "You complete me!" I found the moment irritating and cliche, so I was glad it wasn't in the movie - (or, at least, I don't remember it in the movie). But, it begs the question, why was it in the trailer? Was it an early trailer and the scene was cut out from the film? I can see that could happen if you're rushing a trailer to complete the film. However, I've seen that bit on other trailers. Seems manipulative to me. But, isn't that the point of most trailers? Okay, that's off my chest, though I may look for a few more examples and expound on it another time. On this podcast, I am talking with Mark Bell, the owner and publisher of FilmThreat.com, a website of independent movies, movie reviews and more. I was interested in talking with Mark because Film Threat was a magazine I read in the 90's and 25 years later it's still alive and kicking as a website. I've also been listening to the FilmThreat Podcast which features lively film discussion between Mark and co-conspirator across the country, Eric Campos. It's good to see a zine from back in the day, go from little zine, to popular mag, to zine zomebieland and get resurrected again as a website and still be the vital film resource it is today.Mentions:FlimThreat.comSybrisbackground music: Gary Numan - FilmsSponsors, here are my promo codes: Zazzlemostpeople10 - save 10% any order $50 or moremostpeople12 - save 12% any order $75 or moreGoDaddy!New Codes!DJ10 .COM domain for $7.49DJ9 $5 off $30 or more on any items not already discountedDJ810% off any order not already discountedeMusic 35 free tracks for signing up!Petco.com Save 10% on any order! MPAD#224 "Motor City Comic Con 2010"

For this episode of Most People Are DJs I have 3 interviews I did at Motor City Comic Con on May 15, 2010. The noise levels at comic cons is kind of crazy so when I'm interviewing I have to compete with the aisle traffic noise, chatter from nearby booths and the ever annoying PA announcements. It's easy to lose focus with what you are talking about or what to ask next. However, for MCCC 2010, I tried to put all that aside and really focus on my guests who are doing some spectacular things. MPAD#223 "Heaven Is Whenever We Bleep Together"

Check out the above video which has something tangential to do with the Justin Bleep interview. Finally, I found some time to put together a new Most People Are DJs podcast. But, before I get to the episode, let me chat up some TV season finales. Just watched the Supernatural finale, which was set in Detroit. Pretty appropriate place for the "final" battle to take place. Last night I took in the Survivor finale. Russell was robbed again. Well, not really,. Russell just does not understand when to keep his ego in check. Tonight, it's the Gossip Girl finale. What trouble will Little J. get into this week? Back to the podcast, on this week's episode I review the new release, "Heaven Is Whenever" by the Hold Steady. MPAD#222 "Amber Loves Scott"

Amber doesn't really love Scott, but, you have to admit it's a pretty cute title. I do a lot of talking on this podcast episode about 2 people I'm currently fascinated with, Amber Tamblyn and Scott Walker. Amber's an actress that seems to pop up in TV shows and movies that I find a lot of charm in. I talk specifically about the movie Spiral, an interesting psychological thriller and The Unusuals, which was an appropriately unusual and canceled TV series. Scott Walker's an artist I should have known about for at least the last 20 years, but I just became familiar with him through the documentary 30 Century Man. I make a funny mistake when I mention that The Walker Brother's Nite Flights is 22 years old. In fact, coming out in 1978 makes the album 32 years old. I think a large part of me just didn't want to admit 1978 is 32 years ago - that seems like a such a loooong time. At 32 years old, the song Nite Flights has aged ridiculously well.music - Sunbears! MPAD#221 "The Man Who Collected Food"

I'm the kind of guy that will give just about any movie a chance. Last night I tortured myself with the Syfy "B" movie of the week "Mothman". Not even Jewel Staite's pretty smile could save this one. And yet, this movie gets budget from Syfy, and probably even a DVD. Meanwhile, movies like "The Man Who Collected Food" sit awaiting distribution. "The Man Who Collected Food" is a dark, horror comedy that can take something as horrific as cannibalism and make it non-stop laughs. The film is beautifully shot with striking images and lots of blood. So listen to this MPAD episode as the writer/director, Matthew Roth and actors, Mike Kelly and Russ Fox talk about the fun that went into the making of "The Man Who Collected Food." MPAD#220 "Think About Life - the video"

I had a very busy weekend and just enough time to put this seven minute video together that features interview and music with Montreal band, Think About Life. Think About Life combine great elements or pop and dance with and indie alternative spin that is exciting and fun. Their live show is all about getting the crowd to join in with their onstage fun. Lead singer, Martin, is very engaging as he often joins the crowd at their level, while Caila, the bassist, provides female vocals and does some pretty funky dancing between bass breaks. On this MPAD#220, they took the time to sit down with me and talk about how what they Think About Life on the road and recording. I’m watching a fantastic DVD called Renaissance that I plan on covering for next week’s audio episode. If you get some time try and catch it before the podcast is released. You can get music from Think about Life at emusic, go here to sign up for 35 free tracks. One more thing to mention about Think About Life is the must love dogs as they feature 3 t-shrits with dogs on them.If you have a dog or a cat or whatever you can save money at Petco.com by using my coupon codes Most and Most10. MPAD#219 "Malcolm McLaren's Cruel Intentions"

On this week's audio podast of Most People Are DJs I profile the great Malcolm McLaren who recently passed away and review one of my favorite movies, Cruel Intentions. You can listen to the podcast to hear me talk about each and play music by the Futureheads, Blank Dogs and New Roman Times. A couple of side notes: a lot of what I learned about Malcolm McLaren I got from the book, The Wicked Ways of Malcolm McLaren, a good biography that covers his whole career. I have the book somewhere around my house, I'll have to dig it up. Roger Krumble, the director of Cruel Intentions, also directed The Sweetest Thing with Cameron Diaz, but I never saw it. I did see the Cruel Intentions sequels II, and III. Cruel Intentions II is just okay, and C.I. III is just barely watchable. music: The Futureheads - Struck Dumb Blank Dogs - Heat and Depression New Roman Times VCR (mp3) Buy at Amazon MP3 Sponsors: Zazzle mostpeople10 - save 10% any order $50 or more mostpeople12 - save 12% any order $75 or more GoDaddy!New Codes! MPAD#217 "Majesty Crush on Caprica"

On this week's audio podcast I'm digging in the memory banks and playing music from Majesty Crush, a shoegaze-pop band from Detroit that played some very original music and faded away too fast. Some of the info here comes from a fun "where are they now?" article in the MetroTimes from 2005. The other band I feature music from is P.S. I Love You, which I wish I could get more info on. It's fronted by the lead singer from Majesty Crush but I know nothing else and can find very little with google. I've been watching Caprica on Syfy since the pilot movie last year so I finally get around to saying some words on how great I think the show is and how you should be watching if you're not. music: Majesty Crush - "Penny for Love" "No.1Fan" get Love 15 from eMusic or "I Love You In Other Cities" on Full Effect Records P.S. Here's the 2nd part to my video interview with Owen from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. My laptop crashed this week and is still down so I had to use a back up to make the video. My long way of saying there may be more imperfections than usual with the video. There must be something going around because I have a desktop and a laptop with a bad case of "blue screen". MPAD#213 Casiotone for the Painfully Alone P.1

I haven't done one of my short video documentaries in a while but I've been missing doing them. But, I have a rule that I need to be personally interested in my subject to do a video. I could see lots of shows and make videos but if I don't really like what I'm filming than I am not sure I can make the video. If you haven't created video from bits and pieces, it's a lot of work - even at my DIY style. In the end though when I go back and watch it, it's always worth it. Owen from Casiotone from the Painfully Alone had a killer migraine before the interview so he wasn't even sure he was up for the interview. However, he graciously put then pain aside and sat down with me for the interview. Later he put on a great intimate show of his poignant songs and electronic hymns. Btw, this is part one of a two part video, I got a lot of good material. After doing a few weeks of MPAD video episodes I decided I had a few things on my mind and an MPAD audio episode was due. This episode I catch you up on what I've been up to, a friend that I've made and a new track by an old band. I also talk about the documentary, Heckler, which explains what a Heckler is and how the definition has expanded to bolggers and critics. MPAD#192 "My Dear Disco: Our Motives Are Pure"

I have another video this week. To be honest, doing videos lately has been good for me for a number of reasons. First, the more I do video, the more I learn about how to make it more compelling. Second, I get more people downloading my video episodes, so, while I'm not going to stop doing MPAD audio it's nice to see healthy downloads from my video episodes. Third, I've devoted a lot of my time to my job search, doing the video episodes takes a bit less out of me in prep work. Finally, in making videos it's like I'm using a different part of my brain, I pull back on my opinions or ego and just focus on my video subject and how I can best represent them in my format. This weeks MPAD vidcast features My Dear Disco, a band from AnnArbor that plays an eclectic type of dance music that has elements of world music, jazz, soul, etc. They put on a great live show and were a lot of fun to hang out with. If you enjoy the music, pick up their album on iTunes or eMusic. Sponsors: GoDaddy! new Codes! MPAD#191 "Deastro - Making Things Happen"

I remember the first time I saw Deastro, as the warmup for Manna &Quail a couple years ago. Back then it was just Randolph Chabot his synths and drum kit. He had so much energy, I was blown away. I kept seeing Deastro after, even putting him on my own showcase of bands. The more I saw Deastro, the more I got to know Randolph, full of integrity and fierce ambition. A kid that at this point in life deserves to a have a big ego and flaunt his accomplishments, instead, Randolph just pushes harder, deflating his ego by moving his band to the front and working harder with show after show. Deastro's got a new album out, Moondagger, that displays Randolph's growth as a singer and how he's worked his band into his compositions. Check out this video with Randloph as we sat down on a fantastic June night where Deastro played at the Crofoot in front of over 1,000 of their friends and family.   Sponsors: GoDaddy! new Codes! I've went to a few shows lately and my flip camera has been tagging along. That annoying guy with the small camera he keeps holding in your way - that's me, sorry! But, you reap the benefits. I'm getting the vidcasts down to a "relative" science between mixing in audio, some comments and video. This week's video features 2 of my favorite Detroit bands, Champions of Breakfast and Otto Vector, that just happened to be playing on the same night. Val and Moses from CoB share stories about their touring. Then, Ginseng and Renee from OV tell me about what OV is up to (sort of). I spent last weekend at Motor City Comic Con and had a great time buying some hardcover trades and talking to the artists. Being an independent comic artist at a comic convention is hard work that often goes unappreciated as people flock over to the B-movie stars or bargain bins, leaving out artists that pour their life into drawings and creating books that we relate to so much more than the superhero of the week. MPAD#178 "Reality Bites"

On MPAD#178 I get back to an audio podcast with some great music and talk about job loss, a few podcasts and a terrific new album. As I mention on the podcast here is my review for 800Beloved's Bouquet. 800Beloved "Bouquet" Just the other day I was discussing with my friend how the instant access to the overflowing fountain of music has lead me to a lesser appreciation of it. When music today flows like water from a leaky tap, it's easier to leave the tap dripping. Why bother to even drink from it? It's better to just let it puddle on the floor and maybe some will manage to latch onto my pant cuff as I stumble through it on the way to take a leak. Of course, just to prove I'm full of shit and like to pontificate fancy verbiage, an album like 800Beloved's Bouquet comes along and the water suddenly turns purple with a sugary, syrup taste coaxing me to lap it up like a man that hasn't had a good drink in ages. I could go through a breakdown on just how good each of Bouquet's 11 tracks are with moments that echo New Order with a shoegaze twist, but that would just an exercise in tedium as the whole album is glorious in it's decadent, rich darkness. MPAD#174 "In A Weird Funk"

I had my reservations about putting this episode out, it's not one of my best. But, I'll leave you to be the judge of it. Most of the crappiness lies in that I wasn't prepared for my interview with Gil Mantera's Party Dream. That's not to say I didn't know who GMPD was, I did, I just didn't ever feel relaxed asking them questions. I've been much less prepared for other interviews and had a better go at it. GMPD were nice enough guys, I just an awkward feeling with them I couldn't quite overcome. I also had a lot of problems getting a good recording. I use a Zoom H2 which usually works great, provided people speak loud enough to be picked up by the microphone. Quiet mumbling just doesn't make for a great recording. While I may not be happy with the interview, the music is great. I play 2 tracks by GMDB and 1 track by Love Meets Lust. MPAD#173 "Always A Good Time"

Believe it or not this is take 3 on my show notes/blog for this episode! My first take on show notes didn't even have anything to do with the episode but more on that ridiculous pic of me and one of the members of Millionaires. (Ridiculous refers to the me part of the pic, Allison from Millionaires is fantastic). On take one I had this brilliant, witty blog written that even made a point. Unfortunately, I got this problem with my blog editor that if I do a search on the same page I'm doing the blog on, I lose any text I put in for my blog. It's complicated, frustrating and only an idiot like me makes the mistake twice on the same day! I'll be honest, for me, intellectual brilliance like I had written earlier today is few and far between and there's never a hope that I'm able to recapture it. So, all I can do is move on and tell you to enjoy the episode. MPAD Video "Champions of Breakfast at Luna"

Friday night, Champions of Breakfast (CoB's) played Luna. Let's talk about Luna. Luna is a mainstay in Royal Oak, MI. It is a haven for people like me, that are over 30 (even 40) but still love to shake it to some of today's better alternative music and older music from the days when we maybe looked better on the dance floor. Another tribe at Luna is the "graduated from college but I can't stop the partying" crowd with threadbare college t-shirts, beers in each hand and loud girls in tow. It's a fun place that doesn't discriminate, but those that go usually know what they are in for. This was CoB's first time in Luna, let alone their first time playing Luna. When I arrived they expressed they were a bit nervous how the crowd would react to their performance. After all, if you haven't seen a CoB show, what they do on stage can come as quite a shock. CoB were also the first of 3 bands playing that night, which means the crowd is still a bit reserved, calm and operating on too many brain cells which inhibit the body from really moving. Rather than just take the stage and get their part over with, CoB took their chance and stormed the stage in a flash of frenetic, flashy, high-powered glee. The audience reaction was a thoughtful chin-rub that moved to shake of a head and then wide smiles as arms were thrown up and people moved to floor and joined the party. They got it. CoB proceeded to keep the up the pace with their onstage antics of donning glitter cloaks, plastic armor, fake wooden instruments and off-beat cover choices of "We Built This City..." and "Games People Play." Their choice cover of "Sean Me An Angel" was a clever godsend gift to an audience that remembered the song from their youth. CoB's original songs about video games, Dungeons and Dragons and mythological beings of lore were readily accepted. After all, who hasn't hadn't had a D&D basement party? CoB ended the show with "Pegasus Ride (R U Ready)" which asks the question "are you ready?" and received a hearty reply back. They were indeed ready. If you looked hard enough, CoB could be found after they show,as they left their sweaty, majestic clothing behind for indiscriminate attire and glasses. They moved quietly through the crowd with the occasional nod and handshake. CoB's members, Val Hundreds and Moses Jackson pack it up and go home quietly to plan their next ambush. CoB's next show is February 2nd and 3rd playing with the similarly spastic Gil Mantera's Party Dream.Click here to Download the Video!

MPAD#172 "Kill Your Idols"

On MPAD#172 I review 2 documentaries I saw recently, Religulous and Kill Your Idols. Putting the episode together I discovered (as is usually the case) there was stuff I meant to mention but forgot. I don't want to let that stuff go to waste, so I'm going to slip it in this blog space and if I remember I'll mention it on my next episode. I played a clip from Lydia Lunch and she mentions loving the Dead Boys and how she got her name "Lydia Lunch." Well, hearing about her name, got me thinking about the song "I Need Lunch" by the Dead Boys. Now I know what Stiv Bators meant when he said he didn't need a cook but he still wanted lunch. That song is even meaner and dirtier than I originally thought. For the record, "Young, Loud and Snotty" is better than "Never Mind the Bullocks..." and I don't really care for much by Lydia Lunch but "Death Valley 69" is brilliant. music - Dolphin City - Old Romance Passion Pit - Sleepyhead Bell - Brown Bear The Do - Tammy Jesus Chainsaw Massacre - Dance Dance Dance (Lykki Li remix/cover) reviews - Religulous Kill Your Idols mentions - Hipster Runoff sponsors - 35 free tracks for eMusic Membership Petco - save on Pet supplies More at Mevio Offers!   Click here to Download the Show!

MPAD Presents: My Name Is Charlie Slick

It's getting close to 2009, so I thought I would take this chance to show you some of the new directions I'll be moving towards next year. Most People Are DJs has always been my outlet to promote media and music that doesn't have mainstream recognition, but I think deserves wider attention. The subjects I choose are usually people like myself, that take on the DIY ethic of creating, marketing and releasing their product all on their own. Charlie Slick, the subject of this "MPAD Presents" video is a perfect example of a DIY artist with a clear vision of his wacky, dynamic artistry and why he does what he does. It's a 7 minute video taking live clips from some of Charlie's shows and an interview I conducted with him in September. It's a bit rough, but most of it was done with a Flip video camera and a primitive video editing program, proving anybody can do this. MPAD#167 "Karaoke With A Medic Droid"

Somewhere along the way I think I've lost my aging compass when it comes to music. Friends my age will tell me they don't like new bands because they can no longer relate to them and it isn't relevant to the life they currently lead. For me, music is as much about escapism as it is about wondering weather carries any relevance. I lead a mundane life. I like it that way, but I don't really need a band to remind me of it. What I need is a band that recaptures my youthful spirit by playing music that makes me what to shake off the lethargy that creeps in and settles on me because I've been thinking too much about paying dues and bills. Bands like the Medic Droid and Hyper Crush do that for me. On this episode I play six tracks, I talk to the bands Medic Droid and Hyper Crush, and review the live show. Have a good Thanksgiving, and if you can come out the Crofoot on Nov.29th for Christmas On Mars! MPAD Presents: BPM Media#8

Here it is the final episode of BPM Media. I want to thank BPM, writer/artist Paul Sizer for doing so much work to put these episodes together. BPM Media, was an experiment of mine to promote independent art in a visual medium that could be easily viewed and informative at the same time. In 8 episodes, BPM Media provided bits of knowledge on both, Paul Sizer and his graphic novel, BPM. I hope you enjoyed the episodes, and, moreover, it prompts some of you to buy a book that may have never been on your radar screen. Paul Sizer was the guest on Comic Geek Speak this week, they cover all kinds of territory both music and comics related. For more information on BPM, visit Paul's BPM site he updates it regularly. More Most People Are DJs artist videos are coming, but, later this week expect a packed MPAD episode with music, interviews and, of course, skewed intellect. Click here to Download the Video!

On MPAD#159 I'm playing some new music from a couple of folks that have risen back from the ashes of yesterday, Juliana Hatfield and Wayne Hussey. There's also local band the Silent Years. I saw them play last night and I have to say seeing them live is an almost spiritual event. In the middle are a couple of electro-pop/dance tracks that are very infectious. There's TV talk as I cover what I'm watching this fall, by the way, I watched 90210 last night and believe it or not, it's good! Reminds me of the old 90210 with a fresh spin. MPAD#154 "A Milli Things To Do!"

Last night I got to check out the Art Fag DJ collective at Vernor's Room which was cool, but that isn't the point. I was told by friends that I should see the Hard Lessons, but all I heard was comparisons to the White Stripes who I am just not much of a fan for. But, I made my way over to see the Hard Lessons and they were BRILLIANT! Completely at the top of their game, rocking out like a national headliner and having friends from other bands join them on stage. They made me a believer and you'll hear them on MPAD real soon. As for this week's episode, I split up the talk from the music. I have a 15 minute mix at the beginning that includes a demo from one of my favorite local bands, the Nice Device, then, the mix gets funky and trippy (where's that sample from?) leading to something from Girl Talk's latest (which you can download online). MPAD#152 "Three Years Old and Rising"

Message line 206-279-4725 website - www.mostpeoplearedjs.com So about three years ago I put out my first MPAD episode. I looked at the show as my way of spreading what I deem as good, under appreciated music and other artistic endeavors to an audience larger than the few friends I have been talking and playing this stuff to for years. Doing anything for 3 years on a consistent basis is significant. It's even more significant when you can point to results and events that make the work worthwhile. I can point to friends that I've made, the listeners that I have and events that have made the last 3 years special enough to keep doing this crazy new media show. This week's episode is a typical show with a few new bands I've come across with great songs and some banter about the event I DJ'd (well, sort of) over the weekend. music: The Errors - Dance Music Why - The Hollows Belle Luna - Blissful Escape from "Abstrated Visions" The LK - Never Mind Your Idols from Eardrums "Summers Here" compiliation download it here! Rather than play music and do the usual MPAD episode, on this episode I talk with Lee Bushman, the Marketing Director at Iron Core Entertainment (ICE), a film company that is currently working on the Sci-Fi webvideo series "Terra". Movement 2008 is also known as the Annual Detroit Tech Techfest. A weekend of cutting edge electronic music, DJing and fun. I went to the show on Sunday, May 25 and had an amazing time. I had my flip video recorder with me and took some video. This episode has some of the better footage. It was a crazy day that was packed with people, there was dancing, great music, and friendly faces. You could say I was "moved by movement!" Welcome to June, despite the cost of gas, I think this is going to be a great summer, lots of good shows, a couple festivals and sun. Thanks to the podcast I'm getting involved with things I've always wanted to do - like DJ a show and be part of the process of making a record. There's even more than that, but I don't want to speak too soon, so you'll learn more about that on upcoming MPAD episodes. On this episode, the music is a lighter than last week, with a bit of power pop thrown in. The comic supplied for this page is from Dave LaPlante's Joe Pop, check it out.  music: Mt. MPAD#144 "Fred Chao - Author-Artist of Johnny Hiro"

This weekend in Detroit is Motor City Comic Con and I've been getting back into the world of comics, largely through great indie efforts like American Born Chinese. Part of the purpose of Most People Are DJs, besides playing great indie music, is to showcase people that are using their talent to produce (mostly)independent works of art, whether it's music. films, novels or comics that I think deserve more exposure. On this episode, I have an interview with Fred Chao, the writer and artist for "Johnny Hiro - Half Asian All Hero", a great comic that combines "slice of life" commentary with Japanese history and non-stop action. There are 3 issues out and Fred's working on more. This episode features two interviews from a couple of bands I've played recently and I think really deserve your attention. First up, from Brooklyn, NY, Bell Hollow, 4 guys and a girl that combine to make some beautifully textured rock music that calls back on some of the great 80's bands like the Chameleons and the Sound. Second, I interview PlayRadioPlay, from Texas, who is really just one guy that makes awesome synth-pop with an "emo-like" edge to it. I've been talking about doing 2 different episodes lately, a video and a "music in a foreign langauge" episode. I'm still working on that music in a foreign langauge episoide, but I did do a video episode for this week's MPAD. The video is 2 different clips, the first one is an interview of DJ Ice Cold Chrissy, with his music playing underneath it with video from his set and photos. It's still in what I like to call "guerilla" editing style. The second video is from Electric President and it's neat little video that looks like it took a while to assemble. The show's about 9 minutes show so you shouldn't get too bored. music/video - DJ Ice Cold Chrissy (still looking for a website) Electric President "Insomnia"   other - Get a web domain from Go Daddy for $6.95 a year when you use the code DJ3 Get a free 35 track trial subscription at emusic Click here to Download the Video!

MPAD#131 "Back to Quirk"

I mentioned the weather last week so I may as well update you, today it's freezing rain and slick conditions. I almost slipped getting my paper this morning! I went to shows both Friday and Saturday night, so today I'm truly calling it a day of rest. I noticed that for the past couple of weeks I got away from playing the quirky, synth driven stuff I've identified MPAD with, so this week it's back with a vengeance. I'm also pulling out a couple of surprises. Besides what on episode, here's what else is going on: 800Beloved warmed up for A Place to Bury Strangers and played a brillinat set, they may have an electronic ep up this week so stay on their path. If you like horror then you have to listen to Dread Media, a great horror podcast that is similar to Sci-Fi Dig but for fans of horror. I had an email of mine read on a previous episode. A Knight Rider for 2008 is on tonight and the Spice Girls sold out the Palace. We've retread so much from the recent past that we're really digging the bottom of the barrel. MPAD#130 "The Noise Between Us"

Powered by simple.myfabrik.comThe wind is kicking hard today and it's about 10 below zero F when you factor that in. but, I'm going to keep warm today by having the fireplace on and playing some good music. Judging by the music alone, this is probably one of my best episodes. Four of tracks come from bands that are playing a show on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Crofoot. The slide show above is from a couple of recent shows that I've attended. I even got to announce Crashing Cairo (thanks Wax!) on stage at one of the shows. Before I get into the show notes, here's a couple of things I meant to mention but left out: Mojo did a 3 hour radio show on and with Gary Numan, it was a radio stream, but if you search hard enough you can find an MP3 file of it (or you can email me). I've been reading the Captain America Omnibus for the past couple of weeks and I have to say this may be the best comic storyline I've ever read. The pacing, the characters, plots and subplots are so well told that even though I know what lies ahead, reading it unfold, I never get the sense this was done as sensationalism (see One More Day). Lost is finally back on and I can't say I'm immediately hooked, but, maybe a listen to the Ekobase podast will help. 800Beloved is playing the Magic Stick on Friday with A Place to Bury Strangers, if you missed them at the MPAD Showcase here's your chance to see their incredible live show. I'll probably cover this on next week's show. On with the notes from the show: music: The Dead Bodies "Total Destruction" Us vs. Her "In My Pocket" Bob Mould "The Silence Between Us" for PMN Wild Sweet Orange "Wrestle With God" Chase Pagan "Walzting In the Sky" The Great Fiction "Paleego" Manna and Quail "Honestly" Background music: Jon Kennedy 110% Proof (mp3) Demons (mp3)Buy at eMusicmentions: Bob Mould's career Ok_computer compilation from Mojo Magazine The M&Q show that you need to attend if you're anywhere near the area! sponsor: Get a web domain from Go Daddy for only $6.95 a year when you use the code DJ3   Click here to Download the Show!

I've been wanting to do another show with electronic music at it's heart, and who better to help me with that than Bazooka Joe, an expert on the subject - you can tell just by listening to any of his Solpsistic Nation Podcasts. We span the electronic genres on this show starting with synthy dance music, getting dubby then dark, psychedelic and twisted.
