Suggestion for getting back on the bandwagon
Hi - just heard your great comments to the guy trying to get back on the bandwagon. Wow - wonderful 5 ideas - I love them! I wanted to add something more that works for me. I had read somewhere that setting smaller goals is actually a good thing. So for me - I had a goal of 'running for 20 minutes'. Often (like with 'Fell of the Bandwagon" guy, I would miss a day, then miss a 2nd day, then it was alll but impossible to get back. That's when I read about setting smaller goals. So I set my goal down to 'walk for 5 minutes'. That was something I could do even if I didn't want to - so I would walk 5 minutes (sometimes really slowly) every day. Then I found after a few days it wasn't hard to incease it to 20 minutes. It wasn't long till I was running again. This has worked out miraculously for me (and I"ve been doing it and keeping my weight off for YEARS) because even if I feel awful, I can force myself to walk slowly for 5 minutes (I have a treadmill with a tv...grin). Even when I'm sick! And I can work my way back to 30 minutes running just within a few days (sometimes the next day). Even I stop (like the holidays when there's not even 5 minutes to spare some days) and can't help eating lots of the wrong stuff - getting back to that 5 minutes of slow walking isn't a real tough stretch. And I do it. That's worked for me for a long time. I was always very overweight like my mom - and have been at my healthy weight (actually under it) for all these years. And when I do gain some, it's not tough to lose because I'm right back on the track. Maybe that'll help someone? Annie Submitted By: brandytip@... (on 12-2009)
New to Podcast and have comment
I just happened upon your podcast -not even sure how current they are! They are EXCELLENT! I used to be very overweight and obsessed about eating. My mom was the same so I thought it was inevitable. Then I learned about eating less fat and doing aerobic exercises (I started with a slow walk) - and I slowly lost the weight. It's been 20 years!! In that time - with those two very basic principles (eating less fat and 20 minutes of aerobics) I have kept my weight right at normal weight for all those years! In the meantime I've learned a lot more - that I need to eat heathy and resistance exercises and all - but still it's been the two basic principles that have been my mainstay to stay slim. Even when I go nuts and 'off the bandwagon' I keep my crazy binges to 'low fat' (albiet unhealthy I do admit) and then when I'm back to sanity, I actually don't have the guilt trip that coerces me to continue to eat bad - AND I don't really gain weight (or just a little). Also my aerobic exercise has been a HUGE help - if I'm feeling good enough (which is most of the time) I can build up to a run for 30 minutes - a slow run! But it keeps my general weight and attitude and health good. When I'm tired or just not up to it I run realllly slowly or walk - for 20 - 30 minutes. Just thought I'd sure what has really worked (and is working) for me. It's not a hard regimen either to get back to - and the better I feel the more I'm able to do more and eat healthier still. I'm going to keep listening! Thank you!! Submitted By: brandytip@... (on 12-2009) |
