SDI Vol2No14 April 17, 2006 - The Wonder of Fill Flash

Using a flash to fill in deep shadows can add dimension to your images. If you have a particularly contrasty image, you can use a flash to lighten the shadows and return the image to what you thought you saw with your eyes when you shot the image. Besides discussing fill flash for both point-and-shoot cameras and SLR cameras, I also discuss a Photoshop method of "fill" for images where you didn't use a flash to fillÃïïsaving older images. SLR Cameras Press the lightning bolt to pop up the flash, then press it again to get to the flash settings (check camera manual) Use one of the control dials to adjust flash intensity (-2/3 stop to -1.5 or more) Follow these rules: Set ambient exposure first (general exposure). Determine fill amount and set flash. Shoot! Photoshop Method Open image in Photoshop. Use Levels control to set subject for proper lighting (use middle slider and/or right slider). Open History Palette. Click on 'Open' state in History palette. Click left (first column) of Levels state in History palette (History brush appears in column).
