Hey, I'm probably going to be picking up a Zune in the next month or so, but I was wondering how much support they have for podcasts. Would I be able to listen to the same audio and video podcasts that I could on an iPod? Thanks.

I don't have a Zune, but my understanding is that the Zune Marketplace doesn't have anywhere NEAR the selection of podcasts that's available on iTunes. The Microsoft people have been horrid about getting shows approved over there. I submitted three different shows months and months ago, and to my knowledge none of them are currently available on Zune Marketplace.

I just laid out a ton of cash for a Zune 2 and home media dock on a "#1 podcast device" recomendation from CNet. Do not spend money in this peice of crap. Every podcast you want to listen to you must manualy navigate to and select. What a stupid, stupid idea. No way to shuffle podcasts, so if I'm trying to catch up on a lot of somthing I can't space them out with my other podcasts, and no way to make a podcast playlist. So every time I get to the end of a podcast I have to take the device out of my pocket and manualy select the next on to play. Waste of money since I'm going to stick with my zen until Microsoft fixes this in a firmware release (like it's ever gonna happen).

After my Zen died on me last year, I managed to make the Zune a workable podcast platform by end-running Micrapsoft. The key is a thorough MP3 tag editor.
**This is the arrangement that has worked for me, maybe you can pare down the number of steps necessary, but when I experiment with deviations, sometimes for unknown reasons some of the files don't upload to the zune correctly.** First you need to create a folder in your zune watched podcast folder corresponding to each podcast 'channel' you would like to create (I.E. I have separate channels for news, entertainment, economics, and occasionally add others for catching up on back episodes of newly subscribed 'casts). My tag software (called 'mp3tag 2.43') edits both 3.1 and 3.2 tags. As far as I can tell, only 3.2 needs to be edited, but I have both enabled to be safe. Set your tags to the following: Tittle: [Blank] Artist: [Channel] Album: [Channel] Year: "2009" (or Current) Track: "1" Genre: "Podcasts" Album art, disc number, composer, etc...: [Blank] Where "[Channel]" corresponds to the folder name for the channel that file should be in. Then move the files to their corresponding folder. This process is made easy by a combination of the tag editor software mentioned above, and FeedDemon which collects all new podcasts in one easy to sort through folder. The effect is that each 'channel' is put into the zune's podcasts menu as their own podcast giving you the auto-resume and other podcast specific features, but in a playlist type format with your mix of podcasts playing through without manually clicking on each one. I am now able to upload all of my podcasts to the zune in about 4 clicks each morning. The one thing I've not yet been able to fix is that the zune software dates each file from when zune sees it, not when it was created, so if I have two consecutive episodes being uploaded they will sometimes play in the correct order, and sometimes in reverse order. This effect can be attenuated by uploading your files at the same time each day. Hope this helps some other poor sucker who bought the zune unawares of it's pitiful native podcasting support. |

A man walks into a pub and says, "Give me three pints of Guinness, please." So the bartender brings him three pints and the man proceeds to alternately sip one, then the other, then the third until they're gone. He then orders three more and the bartender says, "Sir, I know you like them cold, so you can start with one and I'll bring you a fresh one as soon as you're low." The man says, "You don't understand. I have two brothers, one in Australia and one in England. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we'd still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three Guinness Stouts too and we're drinking together." The bartender thinks it's a wonderful tradition and every week he sets up the guy's three beers as soon as he enters in the bar. Then one week, the man comes in and orders only two. He drinks them, then orders two more. The bartender sadly says, "Knowing your tradition, I'd just like to just say that I'm sorry that one of your brothers died." The man replies, "Oh, my brothers are fine - I just quit drinking."www.57tao.net
