Austereo counters iPod threat

NATIONAL FM radio network Austereo is preparing to take on retail music stores with plans to become a one-stop online music shop.

Austereo's Sydney general manager Patrick Joyce yesterday downplayed threats to the future of radio from iPods and the new online media of podcasting, saying the internet offered new revenue opportunities.

Mr Joyce told the Australian Broadcasting Summit Austereo was planning an online shopping service so people could order songs as soon as they heard them being played on the radio.

"People want instantaneous satisfaction and to get what they want as soon as they hear it," he said.

The service, for which no launch date has been set, would enable listeners to register their details with Austereo and call a 1800 number when they hear a song they want to buy. Once the order is taken, the song or album will be sent to their email address, ready to be downloaded to their iPod or MP3 player.

Cool idea, but doesn't address the podcasting threat at all. It also assumes that FM radio plays music I want to buy.
