I just bought into the core of this (computer and FW gear) but have a pretty decent history of audio recording (church sermons being the nearest to what I am now podcasting) and some worthy gear which helps get a good sound off the bat...

iMac w/ Focusrite Saffire pres and/or Presonus Digimax via Firewire
Headphone mixer w/ 5 outs
Mackie 824 monitors
Rode NT1 and NT2 mics with foam domes
Bias Peak 6 Pro in case of 2 inputs to 2 track capture
Logic Pro if more than 2 tracks are needed

Obviously 16+ inputs is highly ridiculous for podcast work, but I've noticed the two preamp boxes have their distinct sounds. The Presonus has a limiter which can be handy, but the sound is a bit more coarse compared to the Focusrite.

From the multitrack source recording, I clean things pretty hard to cut time and noise. First, a slash-and-burn approach to make digital black space between the major blocks of content. Setting overall levels at the multitrack stage helps, as well as cutting anything that is particularly tied to one track or another. Then I collapse to mono and clean the overall program of any spoken nonsense that can go and not be missed (uh, ah, um, pops) and finish with levels, SoundSoap noise reduction and such.

I haven't treated my space but for the natural diffusion from furniture and other stuff. But the key anyway is to close mic the best you can and aim the mic somewhere where the acoustic splash is minimized anyway. I sit in one room at the computer, and my co-host is in the living room off to my left where we have about 20' physical space between mics (with each aiming a different direction anyway) so each track is pretty free of cross talk. We have a good sight line through a double wide doorway so in essence we are just capturing a conversation.

By the time all this gets whittled down to mono 80k mp3s, it is a bit ridiculous to have given so much mind to such details, but that is my approach and the sound has been more than adequate for an informational conversation type of show. We just finished our 5th audio show.

I could give you a tour of the entire living room of my apartment (Where I podcast from) but somehow I don't think that would look very good in SD webcam quality video (Which is the only external webcam I currently have).

Cheers :D
