Hey all! Congratulation on this brilliant forum. I have spent the last 3 or 4 hours around here learning lots of precious information on Podcast hardware.

I am now aware of things like preamps, mixers, dynamic mics, condenser mics, etc. but even though I must have read over 70 or 80 threads, I was not able to answer my question, so I decided to post. Here goes:

Would a mixer like the Behringer UB502 (only has one preamp, so only takes one mic, right?) be usable for 1 Condenser Microphone (for me, the host) and 2 lapel mics (for the guests - these mics would have their own battery charger thing)? I really don't know if I can connect the two lapel mics to the mixer through jacks...

Sorry for my lack of knowledge!

I'd really appreciate it if someone could enlighten me. Thanks! :)

Your central question seems to be about the lapel mics. It really depends upon what you buy. The most simple lapel mics (AKA lavaliers) are designed for portable recording or for PC inputs and require a bias voltage to function. Now this is different than a condenser mic that requires phantom power. Phantom power is +48 Volts, while "bias voltage" is just a few Volts (5 to maybe 9 on the high end). So, to use one of these with a mixing board, you need a so called "battery box" that supplies the bias Voltage and then outputs a signal you can run into a mixer. This might be what you meant by "battery charger thingy". Other lavaliers have conventional microphone level outputs. In either case, you need a mixer that has inputs for all of the mics you'll be using. So you need at least 3 mic inputs. Be certain of what type output your mics have and that will determine the kind of mixer you need to buy, and perhaps extra interface accessories, like the battery box I mentioned and/or cables to convert between connector types. Good luck! Brian.
