The Pink Duchess and Her Army of Daffodils
I make lots of useless eyes. You make about ten of them before you make one that is useful. That one belonged to a pink duchess. At least she called herself a duchess, or rather, "The Duchess". Those days, noble titles mean nothing. At least, they shouldn't mean nothing. The assembler made everything plentiful. Why pay for something when you can just download it from the web and print it? With money disappeared separations and classes. That's what I keep telling myself. Then, there's people like The Duchess.
No one knows where The Duchess came from. She just appeared one day with her army of engineered daffodils and took over. Everyone else became her subject. Those where mean looking daffodils mind you, not your everyday flower. If you tried to resist The Duchess, they would tickle you to death. It was a mean way to die. No wonder she took over so easily. She brought a new order to the city, a pink sort of order. That's right - we had to paint everything pink, and I mean everything. We had pink cars, pink houses, pink trees, even pink dogs running around. You should have seen the cats. They looked absolutely baffled at this. Anyway... I digress...
For a long time, everyone seemed at ease with the situation, at least on the surface. Below the surface there was some grumblin' and a rumblin'. Of course a resistance movement had to be formed. Attempts where made on The Duchess's life. Feeble attempts at first, but they got better at this. Called themselves "The not so pink resistance." Never liked that name. The Duchess got damaged, many times, like some pink porcelain doll, so she came to me, the patch-maker.
I take care of things, grow organs, and I don't mean those pipe organs either, I mean real human organs. I have the 3D printer and all. I'm a master at this. They are all works of art. All of'em. This time The Duchess lost her eyes. Her daffodils went crazy, going about the city trying to tickle everyone to death. Many casualties. Look, I'm making new eyes for her. Aren't those pretty? Maybe she would learn to see with those, see what she has done. Maybe? Na... I'm just kidding. You know... I like making those eyes. I heard pink is the color this year.
