Can I use my general blog feed for podcasts?

I have a wordpress blog to which I post articles. These consist of nothing more than words and an image, like a JPEG.

Can I use that same wordpress blog to post my podcast? In other words, will the posts that include an mp3 file be automatically singled out as podcast posts?

Or do I need a separate feed? Wondering how I can use my main website as a source of general pages and posts and also my podcast posts.

No, but you can use an adjunct of it for your podcasts.

As you have a WordPress installation on your blog you should get one of the WordPress podcasting plug-ins. Installation of that will generate your RSS feed for you.
