We just are now getting into the whole Skype thing, and we are wondering how to record Skype conversations so we can edit them later.

I use a program called Call Recorder for Mac by Ecamm (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/) for $14.95 you can set it up to automatically record all calls in various quality levels. What I like about it is that you can use a supplied utility to split the tracks into 2 so you can edit both sides of the conversation. It is a bit more of a challenge if you have multiple callers on the line. My Podcast is Toastcaster, A Podcast for Toastmasters (http://www.toastcaster.com) and this product serves me well.

Hotrecorder.com is free, and works like a charm. (They also offer a converter of the file to wav, for $14.00)

Check out this other thread about Skype:

Do you have a hardware mixer or multiple sound cards? More than one sound card is useful so that your listeners won't hear your computer's other sounds when you record skype. Some programs record skype separately, but If you just use your output mix or "what you hear" setting on your sound card to record skype calls using any recording program, your listeners will hear your voice in studio quality, your caller's voice in varying quality (as you know), along with any other music or sounds you are playing. Luckily, Skype has built-in echo cancellation so that your called party won't hear their voice echo back to them. You might want to check out the forum on phone interviews as well, since people mention skype there too.

On a Mac I use WireTap Studio. It's kind of expensive ($69) but it works like a charm, it's easy, and you can adjust the levels of the two recorded tracks (yours and your skype callers) independently.

http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/

On a PC I use CallBurner for Skype. Also kinda expensive ($60) but it records both sides of the conversation as *seperate* wav files that you can put together in Audacity or Garageband during Post.

I use two computers...one that runs Skype, and another to record the mix of my voice and the Skype conversation on Audacity. If you have the luxury of two computers (I have both a laptop and desktop) this works pretty slick.

Some softphones have a record capability built in to them, like ExpressTalk (http://www.nch.com.au/talk/be.html) from NCH Software.

Or you can Use some thing like SoundTap (http://www.nch.com.au/soundtap/index.html) to record all of the sound on your PC.

If you are using an IP or USB phone, then you might want to use a call recording adapter (http://altoedge.com/callrec/index.html) with the phone.

I know this program, that's what I use too. I agree that it's worth trying, reliable and stable app. Unlike SoundTap, for example, it is designed especially for Skype recording

I use call recorder by Ecamm also for my mac pro and it works awesome with skype. My end sounds awesome. Then I can split the conversation tracks and if the other person being interviewed is using Ecamm or another program that can split, then it is like we are in the same room. But it also depends on the mic you use. I use a blue snowflake usb and it does a great job. If you have windows then you can use Pamela or another program to record and split. I also own a Rhode NT3 mic and M-Audio USB fastract but prefer the snowflake mic since it is just plug and play. also it is less than $80. I paid over $400 for the Rhode and M-Audio+ cables.

I'm recommending Skype Call Recoder. It is freeware, it is recording directly to mp3. Starts and stops automatically. Plus it is recording conversations and calls to/from landlines with no limitations. Skype Recorder (http://voipcallrecording.com/Skype_Call_Recorder) link

I think Pamela is very good, it can record calls, video, chat and loads more.

There is a freeware version and a paid Pro version that you get 30 days to trail.

My partner used it for her Masters Degree when she was interviewing people for one of her modules and it worked flawlessly.

You can find it by searching Google for "Pamela Skype"

So I tried using Logic Express as my recorder going through a Firepod station but for some reason the person on the other line doesn't get my voice when every I set up Skype to except the Firepod as an input and output... Anyone else use the pod as well?

Output is just great I can hear them with great quality but nothing when I'm trying to chat with them.

ps. I'm using a Macbook to record

you can easily record Skype calls and video calls using Supertintin (http://www.supertintin.com (http://www.supertintin.com/)). This is a lightweight software (less than 3 mb in size) but recording quality is superb. It is also very reliable and stable as compared to other recorders.

Supertintin is fully compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7, and works best with the latest versions of Skype (versions 5.0 - 5.3).
