View Full Version : Where has podcasting gone to?

Dear God, what is going on in the world of podcasting.
I started doing this in the summer of 2005. I sold the show at the end of last year and started a new one. I haven't been to the alley forum in over a year and it seems that pod-fading has become the norm. iTunes is an even bigger joke than ever.
Where are all the long-time podcasters? The diehards that wont quit? Please tell me you're still here.

2 things happen to most podcasters: They get popular and stop coming here to concentrate on their own community, or they don't get popular and eventually quit.

Then there's that rare third podcaster who, like me, doesn't get popular and doesn't quit :)

More seriously, there has to be a certain amount of people in a forum to make it worth going to. If everybody who "would hang out at Podcast Alley if there were more people to talk to" actually came here and participated, then there'd be tons of people here. Problem is, there's no way to make all of them post for a week to show the rest of them that they're actually here.

At 136 weekly shows, we're still at it. We don't have a big budget sponsor yet, nor a top-100 sized audience, nor have we really had the time to deploy our own forum software. We're too busy trying to save the real world (http://www.wilderness.net/).

When someone asks a technical question I haven't answered a dozen times, I'll make an appearance and post. Otherwise, all of these forums (Pickle, 411, PodcastingNews, etc.) are really quiet these days.

Podcasting is far from dead, but the hype and fad has certainly passed.

i don't think forum activity is really a good way of judging how many people are still into podcasting or even listening to podcasts

part of the problem is that there are 40,000 podcasts on this site and there is no real way of separating all of the good content from the bad

keep your chins up!

if your not in a "top 100" its hard for people to even begin to discover independent content when sites like this are so inundated

Yeah, I think podcasting enjoyed a kind of surge right before youtube got really really popular...my theory is that youtube diverted attention from podcasters.

BUT, I think a lot of businesses still use podcasting to great effect. I have been listening to a bunch in preparation for my own show and there are still some great ones out there.

Hey Yotto,
It's good to hear from you. It's been a while.
Thanks for your response guys.

I definitly fall under the "not popular/won't quit" catagory. I never really worried about having more than 10 listeners anyway: I'm just having fun.

I get to meet Martial Arts legends and celebs, sit at ringside and commentate fights. What could be more fun?

I last saw an episode of American Chopper with the Teutul family. Paul Teutul sr. called a company for some tattoos, and got a 23 yoa cocky tattoo artist on the phone. Famous words by Paul sr.:
We want to have fun while working. If it's all about work, I'm not interested.

Good to see you again, Steve.

Still here. I'll be on like crazy for week, and then get hit with some cyclical work and be gone for a couple. In the near future, I'll probably be off the Alley more than I'm on it. We're redesigning our website, shooting some more shows, and I'm launching a third, limited-run podcast this summer. Full plate!

Eric
