Hi, I'm curious how many people podcast to get business exposure.

I'm starting a small production business with some friends of mine and I've read that podcasting can help to get your name out there if you have content and distribute it in the appropriate channels. Like we might do a podcast about the top ten mistakes most amateur video editors make, or something along those lines (different to represent without visuals!).

Has anyone used a podcast as an advertising vehicle?

Yeah I am actually trying to do something similar

I work for a publishing house that wants to create a podcast around the poetry/short fiction scene in northern california

Seems pretty straight forward to me, but I know they want to try to get it on iTunes if possible.

Has anyone ever tried to do this?

I am. I do it for my own business and two other organizations ... hopefully soon to be three. The trick is to promote your business, but also present information that's useful and entertaining enough that the audience doesn't mind the occasional plug for your services.

I've done this a number of times with great success. Not on my own... I'm struggling to start my first company and podcast only recently... but I've helped build podcasts in other companies that have taken the world by storm. If you do it right, you can bring in a ton of business. Or, if you do it wrong, well, you waste a bit of time and still have fun. There are a lot of podcasts about video/film/photo editing, so you've got a bit of competition. But if you are really an expert and you have something to offer, give it a try. If nothing else you'll have an archive of video tips on your site for your customers. Goodluck!

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I know that there's a bit of competition out there, but it might be worth a shot anyhow. At the very least it will give my existing customers a kind of "aural" newsletter, which can also help to network. I think the mix of shameless self-promotion and good content is basically the trick, too.
