I know, you've all heard this before a million times I'm sure... but I can't figure this out...

I've got a domain and it's hosted. I have my first podcast episode ready, but I cannot figure out this weblog/server/RSS thing. Every podcast tutorial and PDF I look at says I must now post my file (episode) to some server or weblog. First, I don't understand how I would do this and second, I have my own site. Why can't I just use my 50 million gigs of web space that I pay for to place my files on?

Perhaps I'm missing something, but why would a service allow me to place files on a site that I pay nothing for and why wouldn't I use my web hosting service?

And how do I "create" an RSS when EVERY tutorial says "now create your RSS" and doesn't say how?

Man, am I lost!

Thanks!

The easiest thing to do is to use a blog to create your RSS feed for you. First, upload the file to your server. Then, if you have a blog, create a post that includes a link to the file. It's best to create a blog category called "podcasts" or something along those lines and ONLY use that category when you post episodes. Once you've created the post with the file link, get the feed for the podcast category you created (check with your blog software to figure out how to pull up a category feed). That feed is the one you'll submit to iTunes, Podcast Alley, etc.

If you DON'T have a blog ... get one. The only other ways to create an RSS feed are to code it by hand or host it on a feed creation site like Rapidfeeds.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I do have a blog.

So you're saying to upload the episode to my host server and then plug that URL location into a post on my blog?

This process "creates" an RSS feed?

This is where I get confused.

Sorry for the lack of knowledge on my part, but this is where it breaks down in my head.

Yes, and yes. The blog software creates the RSS feed. If you look around your blog there should be a link to your RSS feed, assuming you haven't deleted it.
