View Full Version : iTunes Video Podcast Issue

Ok,

So I have been using iTunes for all my video podcast subscriptions since long before Christmas. It has been perfect. But, now when they update, I watch them update and download. But, it auto deletes them like RIGHT after they are done. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting new episodes then I watched it by looking in the directory as they started to download and then when the download of the episode is done... BOOM they go away. <sigh>

Anyone have this issue or have an idea? I've searched and searched even in all the Apple forums.

I am now clueless...

Are you using a Mac or a PC?

Mac, using the latest iTunes, I haven't dared to 'upgrade' to Leopard yet. So I am still on Tiger.

I'm still on Tiger, too.

I've had my own issues with the latest upgrades. I have an older version of FCP and the latest upgrades broke the capturing ability and caused a crash on launch. I had to painstakingly revert my system to a prior OS.

I don't know for sure, but I think I've narrowed the problem down to either Quicktime (which was updated to fix a security flaw), the latest Pro Apps support updater, or the latest OS patch. I know, that's a pretty big list. I'd start with stepping your Quicktime back to a prior version. I didn't see a way to step back iTunes. If that doesn't work, you might have to step back either your Pro-App support package, or your OS.

I personally think it was Quicktime. Once I'm off deadline, I'll be doing some more experimentation. That's the big A/V engine under the hood, and I've had other problems with some of their updates.

I'll try that.

I did completely extract Quicktime as a test, but I just re-installed the latest one from the Apple website. I'll see if I can find the older ones. Sometimes Apple hides away the links to all the old apps since they tend to NOT want people to go backwards. It took me forever to find an old iTunes, to see if THAT would fix it, but.... nope... so I'll try the older Quicktime.

I would be amazed if that fixed it though, since I can WATCH the file download, see it in the folder as it is downloading. Then... BOOM, it auto-deletes the podcast and doesn't even plop it in the Trash. <sigh>

Maybe it's the security update then?

So,

I went in and hacked around and now have the older Quicktime, and backed off to the versions I WAS using before all this crap started to happen. <sigh>

But all the same **** issues. At least now it deletes the video podcasts as they are finished, but gives me the little grey exclamation points. Maybe that is a step forward... but not the 'result'! :)

How about right-clicking on the podcast and select "Do not auto delete". Next, you can delete the video files manually. I'm sure if you want to keep only a certain amount of episodes, you can install an Applescript and have it run through iCal.

I've looked on Dougscripts.com, but the database was down. I'm not familiar enough with Applescript to write it myself, but I can tweak an existing script, by hacking it (read: understanding how it works).

You could also go into your local library and delete the iTunes plist file. This might delete your subscriptions (but I doubt it, since I believe those are stored as part of your iTunes library), but if it's a preferences thing causing this, it should also delete that.

Ok,

I went back to my PC for the past week just so I could actually USE my iPod. Today I had some time to dig around and noticed something strange.

Any video podcast that comes down as a m4v file it keeps and it is happy.

It AUTO deletes the files on its own right away when done downloading if they are in mp4 format. <sigh>

So, I still need to use my **** Windows XP to do my nightly updating until I find a real fix.

Grrrr...

What about .mov format?

I am not subscribed to any video podcasts who use the mov format. I just installed the update that came out for iTunes and Quicktime last night. But... no dice, all still has the same friggin crappy issue.

****,

All this time, and I STILL can't use iTunes on my Mac for podcasts... since all video podcasts just download, then auto-delete for no **** good reason!
