Hello everyone! Just getting ready to start my first podcast.

I have been reading through the threads but can't find the info I am looking for. I have one microphone plugged into my mic jack, and one usb mic set up. How do I record with both? Is there a software program I can use, or some kind of mixer? I am clueless.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks,
Sue

If you have a very fast and powerful computer -- something high-end bought in the last year, you can reliably get away with making the computer do the mixing in real-time. Otherwise, I would suggest getting two analog microphones an inexpensive mixer (you'll find many mixer recommendations elsewhere in the forum; my suggestions would not be the cheapest). Connect the mixer output into the line-level sound input connector on your computer.

Another option, if your mic input is stereo, would be to use a breakout cable to put one mic into each channel, and then mix them in software after you're done recording.

Unfortunately my computer is about six years old. Is there a mixer I can use with a usb mic, or do I have to buy another mic? How do I find out if my mic input is stereo? Are there any other ways to record two people at once without getting a mixer?

Yes, use one mic. You can use an omnidirectional mic somewhere between you. If the mic is directional (cardioid, or heart-shaped, sound profile), you need to handle your mic like a reporter does (direct it to the speaking party), and only speak in turns.

It is a little bit more involved than using two mics and a mixer, but, hey, you're on the cheap, so you shouldn't really complain.

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping this could be done somehow with the equipment that we already have. I'm wondering if it might be a better idea for my co-host and I to record from our separate computers using skype. Does anyone have any advice on whether this might be a good choice for me? Thanks.

That would be fine, but you would need a Skype call recorder, and the audio quality will suffer, unless you record each host's audio locally, and combine them into pristine audio file. This is often called a "double ender".

I suggest you also check out this website: How to Podcast (http://www.how-to-podcast-tutorial.com/index.htm)
