View Full Version : "Talk Show" Internet Radio Station Start-up

I am considering starting a small "professional" level internet radio station (by "professional", I mean a bandwidth/price plan large enough to avoid having the host site inserting their own ads between show) and I would appreciate any sincere feedback and advice.
Now, this may sound picky, but, this is what I'd like to have:
I would like to have several already-established "talk-show" style podcasts (meaning NO royalty-required music, all podsafe music for transitions and intros, etc.) with a general theme of "community". By this, I mean: It would be cool to have podcasts that cater to their locale, town, city, region, etc.
I am avoiding shows or material with any type of political agenda and excessive profanity. I know thats really subjective but, hey...you get the general idea.
I have produced about 70 podcast episodes (I know, I'm still a newb compared to a lot of you guys) for a couple different shows that I did in the past and have all the gear to produce material to contribute to the station but NOBODY wants to listen to a station with THE SAME SHOW on all the time!
Some thoughts about cost considerations: I don't want to be an internet enterprise that charges people to have their show on my station. I want to have more control over which shows I have play on my station other than "Did they pay this month?" Likewise, I certainly can't afford to PAY anyone for their show contributions. This would be, more or less, a means of getting more potential listeners in return for allowing me to use a show's material. Perhaps that would change in the future if the station actually picked up some advertising.
I am thinking about going "on air" in approximately one month.
Now, there are a ton of people out there with more experience than I about internet radio, podcasting, business sense and virtually all other aspects of life. Please give me some practical feedback!
Thanks for your help!

How about the community of people interested in books and reading? No geographical boundaries there but simply agreement with our motto that "Books Are More Precious Than Gold." Each podcast features book reviews, news of books, often special features such as "Let's Judge A Book By Its Cover" and a look at what book-related magazines and other media are covering.
Our latest is Show # 5 that does break with the above, short-established tradition, and focuses on one book -- HARM by Brian Aldiss. HARM is a dystopian novel sure to interest anyone who reads today's headlines and wonders what tomorrow may bring. Is it this generation's 1984? It is certainly one of the best post 9-11 novels. We are usually NOT a poltical show but in this one show we do have some politics. You might wish to check previous shows as well to see the usual format and direction, to which we will return in Show # 6.
BOOK HOBBY is available here on Podcast Alley, of course on iTunes and the direct feed is feeds.feedburner.com/bookhobbycom. You might also like to visit our www.bookhobby.com (http://www.bookhobby.com/) site where you can not only listen directly to the podcast but comment and leave your own thoughts in our large set of community Forums as well as look over dozens of other reviews. Thanks!

I have no interest in having an iPhone.
Truth be known, neither do I.
No consumer replacable battery?
No upgradable memory card slot?
$500.00 base model price?
Anyway...
Everyone please keep the suggestions and comments coming! I appreciate the interest!

Hi Kurt --
I tried to reply to your email but it came bounced back to me that the address cannot receive email. Here's what I sent to you email minus the attachment of the promo. Hopefully you will see it here.
-------------------------
Hi Kurt --
Thank you very much for your letter and your kind offer to have the BOOK HOBBY podcast in your rotation of shows. Based on your explanation below I accept that offer and look forward to our association!
Your letter means a lot to me as I really do not personally know many people who are interested in both listening to podcasts and reading books. Most of the feedback I get is from people who read but who have never listened to a podcast or from podcast, music-junkies who haven't read a book since the last required reading assignment. So, LOL, reading your commentary has made me feel very good, thank you!
Could I possibly prevail upon you to do a cut-and-paste from your letter into the "Be First to Review" Area on my iTunes page? Maybe it would help to draw in a few subscribers!
I am attaching our new BOOK HOBBY Promo to this email. Perhaps you would like to use it in your rotation between other shows? As you get closer to release please let me know and we can swap promos and perhaps cross-link on our web sites? (I'm guessing you will have one, or a blog).
Thank you again and best,
Neil

Hi, Neil!
I don't know why it bounced back to you but I received both of your emails and just replied to the most recent one via email.
I am responding here as well...just in case!
I have no idea what is wrong with my email. Anyway...
I'm thrilled to have you come on board with the station and I look forward to working with you!
I provided more detail in the email I just sent and we should be starting up around the beginning of August.
Thanks again! I'll contact you personally soon.

Hello, again, all!
There are now five "talk show" podcasts who have agreed to participate in the internet radio station to be launched in the first week of August.
I am still looking for MANY more podcasters who would like to participate and the general premise is as mentioned above.
1. The show must be already established and use ONLY podsafe music and material (no royalty-required material). Your show should contain little or no profanity.
2. The show should be in a "talk" format.
3. I am not charging anyone to broadcast their show.
4. I am not paying anyone to broadcast their show.
5. I will not be selling advertising (and, therefore, not making money from)using your podcasts on the show. This station is not a profit-making venture.
6. Shows should not be political or repeatedly express political concerns, issues or strong political opinions. (I am not saying there isn't a place for such shows. I'm just saying it isn't THIS station.)
I am seeking informative and interesting shows. The inclusion of interviews and guests speakers/hosts is always a plus.
Participation is voluntary and a participant may let me know they want to stop contributing at any time and I will remove their shows from the station. All material submitted remains the property of the contributor.
Please let me know if you have an interest in participating or if you have any questions. There is still plenty of room on the station!
:)
Thanks for your time.

Hi Kurt,
Go to shoutcast.com and download the server software, assuming you have a cable or DSL connection to the Internet. Consider that there are very few streaming listeners compared to podcasters. Even large (though political) alternative shows average 300 connections. Try it out from your personal computer for a while. Use a firewall on that machine if at all possible, people may attack it. You could get by with a dedicated server package.
Ahem, if I may. Since you mentioned a service to outlet. Have you considered buying airtime? Dont quite know your budget, but its a blast to have quite a few listeners. There is shortwave, thats a whole thing. Many local small AM stations will sell ya an hour.
Rock on bro.

Excuse me "baltbt", you are quoting my name in your Spam for this thread. Firstly, your followups do not apply to this thread, and secondly one post should suffice for a complaint regarding a member.
But, this is a perfect example of the silly arguments which "manifest" around talk radio, so ... perhaps its a heads up for Kurt in what to expect on the call-in lines.

I think this is either someone paid to do this, or a sophisticated "bot" trying to get people to use the email address (in order to mine for new addresses to spam?). By couching it in a discussion, it looks less "drive-by" than most forum spam, which are usually just single posts.
As much as I despise this, and as much as you must hate being included in this game, the posts are fricking hilarious!

You will have to excuse my posting, didn't mean to use your tread but couldn't get my own.
It is not a silly arguement against a member, it was really a real question for the members.
What do they think this type of email address when sent out to women is suppose to mean.
Are people being Silly(or having dirty minds)when getting upset or thinking this is suppose to sound like it sounds.
Am I really thinking the worse??
Its a real discussion and I would really appreciate people
expressing their opinions on WHAT GONNAEATYOU@HOTMAIL.COM COULD POSSIBLE MEAN.
Could there actually be an innocent meaning?????
Please tell me, I would like to know.
Believe me I would like to think there is an innocent meaning,
Any ideas??

One more thing.
Thanks Eric, you made my night, really.
For calling my creativity,"Perhaps A Sophisticated Bot",
or maybe, "I was paid to make this Spam".
Especially, since I've never joined a website like this, I don't spend much time on the computer, so am willing to learn.
Next time, I will try to be more mature and Follow The Rules, usually I am a cooler person than that.
It was a real question I wanted open for discussion, trust me this member is NOT embarrass of his email address or he wouldn't use it. He's quit Proud.
Really, could there be an innocent meaning for the address, and wouldn't they just tell that meaning when asked, if it was innocent?
---Instead of accusing "PEOPLE" of having Dirty Minds?
Good Night.
It's not a dangerous Spam, don't worry, it's a Real Life Email
Address, I wish it was SPAM

Okay. Sorry about assuming you were spamming the boards. I hope you'll forgive me, as it is fairly common for people to spam the boards in many ways.
Your question about the member is in the wrong place. You should post this in the "Everything Else" forum, or make your own topic. If a Moderator sees this, perhaps they will split the posts off for us. You should be able to make your own topic very easily by selecting the appropriate board from the forum directory, and then clicking the button that says "New Thread."
About the question itself: I've never seen anyone here with that name or email address. The only reference I've seen to him is in your posts. Are you sure he belongs to this forum? Do you have any proof?
There's nothing wrong with the name he's chosen. It's perhaps a little risque, but it's vague and not obscene. I think it's left to the individual to interpret what it means, and to have to come to terms with it. If you don't like this person, you shouldn't be trying to get us to join your fight.

Back to the initial subject of the thread....
I have two podcasts that I'd love for you to feature. Both are primarily interview-driven and both are squeaky clean.
1) Fighting Back: A show I produce for a nonprofit organization. It tells inspirational stories about people and families fighting serious or incurable diseases. Episodes can be found on the blog (http://www.fightsma.org/blog/category/podcasts) or of course via RSS (http://feeds.feedburner.com/fightingbackpodcast).
2) Startup BizCast: This show features advice for small business owners delivered via interviews with small business owners and other experts. It can be found at the blog (http://www.startupbizcast.com) or via RSS (http://feeds.feedburner.com/startupbizcast (http://www.startupbizcast.com))
I'd love to talk to you more about your venture. Feel free to email me at info-@-startupbizcast.com (removed the dashes)

Thanks, that was almost correct. So, I checked into it. The line from austin powers is different, unfortunely.
Actually, I know he means it the way it sounds, because he was giving it to girls to try to online cheat on his girlfriend.
He tries to make it sound vague, so he could blaim others for getting mad, or blaiming others for having dirt minds.
Yes, I have come to terms with what it means and I just got it out of my system by telling his girlfriend what about it.
If it was innocent he would have told her about it and talking sexy talk to girls online. Even calling his "email name" "HIS SPECIALTY".
Yes, he belongs here, his last post was about, "The NEXTBIGTHING", group.
He wrong, 40 and Nod,whatever on June 6th.
Ok, well thanks for the input, I'm ex-joining the group.

I've been running an internet talk radio station for a year now, TalkRadioX (http://talkradiox.com). It's a lot of fun and a lot of work. We're always looking for shows to help fill up the schedule and can bring shows in live if they wanted to. Though we have plenty of hosts with potty mouths.
Good luck with your station, if you need any help let me know.
