View Full Version : Question about the podshow stats

Well, my podcast stats are very weird. It'll say on the front apge that I have 300 downloads for exsample, but when I lookwhere everye pisode is listed, it'll say 370 for the same episode. That makes no since.

Also, I think these stats seem to lag. ne time I went from 400 downloads for one episode, to 500 and an apology from podshow for a bug.

My second question is, do the podshow stats include itunes downlods, or if someone was listening on the "Pickle player" or some other type of podcast player?

PodShow uses http://maani.us to interface with their stats...

Naturally with any customization and hacks I've probably never thought of - follows the bugs, however I've also seen much improvement with PodShow stats. I'm currently using the same charts as well on my own server - and it's proved to be buggy at times, but then my issues are probably be different than PodShow.

I suggest if you're seeing some off stats that don't figure right, then contact PodShow support about the issue.

Cheers-
Scott

As long as iTunes or the Pickle Player are using the same RSS feed that PodShow is, then Podshow is counting those downloads.

That brings me to another point. Subscribers do not always equal the same numbers as downloads. For example, if the Pickle Player counts as a subscriber it will only probably count as one, even though 100 people could listen to your podcast at your site through the player.

It's very possible to have more downloads than subscribers because people may only download one episode to see if they like it without subscribing to it (if that's the case, and you host your files somewhere other than PodShow, then PodShow will not count direct downloads). There are other scenarios out there that could also amount to a large discrepancy between subscribers and downloads, so it's important to know the difference between the two, and to know what the most important stat is... Which is actual downloads.

The stat figures for one of my shows are strange in that they are going up and down from day to day. I have not deleted and reloaded the episodes, and my other shows look as I might expect, ie they only go up.

Anyone else seen this happen?

I 'would' like to know the source of the download, ie mashboard, download or channel link and I cannot see if the downloads are from multiple IP's or repeats at the same IP. Such stats would be handy, but I appreciate that the podshow hosting is free.

Cheers, Mike

That might be something you should contact PodShow tech support about.

You also don't say what it is that's going up and down... Subscriber stats or Download stats. Subscriber stats will fluctuate day-to-day. That's a given. Accurately counting subscriber stats is like, as I believe it was Jen from Bucket who said, "herding cats." There's not hard and fast rules, only "guestimates." That's why downloads are what you should be counting, and not subscribers.

Thanks for the feedback. The stats I refer to are those on the summary page for the show. I keep a running tab so I can graph the show in a longer term than the podshow graphing does. I would like to see an xml feed for the stats but I note the some of those feeds have been abused in the past.

I do give feedback via the contact page but I felt a forum discusion on the subject may avoid the same query flooding tech support when the answer is in the pipeline, and they do seem very busy rolling out new features, and as I said I do appreciate that the hosting is FOC.

Sorry, but that doesn't tell me the stats you're talking about. Not everyone here uses PodShow. Again, were you talking about subscribers or downloads?

The page I am using decribes the figures as 'Requests', I assume the figure includes downloads from Podshow and plays in the Podshow MashBoard.

Remember, to get your file to your listener, they're always "downloading" it. It doesn't matter if they click "Play" or "download" or what.

So, "requests" should be a fairly accurate count of total times the file was accessed, and the total number of listens is likely a bit less than that (how much is the subject of much debate, though I suspect it's generally more than 90%. So if you have 100 requests, you have a least 90 people who have listened to at least part of your show)

Requests/downloads will vary day-to-day. People may be browsing your back catalogue. I do find it odd that the total number of requests overall varies, if that is in fact what you're saying is happening, because that should climb. Just don't expect every day to be the same. Sometimes requests per day will be up and down.

Yes that is it, the total number figure is going down somedays.

I'll wrap this question up now, I think the answer is yet to be discovered. I am going to put it down to some partial rolling back of the database somedays. It is likely to be happening during the beta testing of Podshow, and would explain this result.

Thanks for everyones input, it is appreciated, but I thought the Podshow developers were more active on this board than they are.

You'll probably have more luck hitting the Podcast Alley Help thread, or even approaching a mod or admin directly. The boards don't exactly seem like their highest priority lately.
