View Full Version : Where are the podcasters?

So, there are several thousand podcasts on Podshow.com - and this is the only forum on a podshow-owned site that I'm aware of. So naturally all of the podcasters are using it to talk and share information, right?

So where are they? I found exactly three threads in the Podshow forum with recent discussions. WTF?

Are all the podshow podcasters hanging out on some other forum I haven't found yet?

Djtrashy:

I'm pretty sure this forum category is for talking about those podcasts that are affiliated with PodShow services, like PCA, PSMN and PDN. I agree with you that this includes thousands of PodCasters (yourself included).

My guess is that most of the conversation is being held in other categories though, and that this category was set up for people to talk about PCA, PSMN and PDN (not to mention ipodder.org) regarding problems, reviews, feature requests and more.

Since there?s not a lot of activity, I?ve interpreted it to mean that (A) there aren?t a lot of complaints and requests for new features and that (B) if there are, users are talking about it elseware.

That's my impression anyway.

Good point!

Good question. They may be posting in other threads but they don't hang out in the threads I've posted in. I visit this forum about once every two or three months and every time I enter I find the same posts I read last time with few new ones. In other words, compared to other forums I frequent this is not very active.

Podcasters, in general, want people to go to their websites. So, a lof of them have their own forum.

Some of them even have more posts than Podcast Alley does :)

Yeah, many of the "big names" have found their own boards more conducive to their shows and getting their audience to participate. It's not always pretty when the audiences of two or more "rival shows"* meet out in the open.

* Of course, the issue of how a show can be a rival of another when they don't compete in a traditional media kind of way would be an interesting topic in and of itself, but that's another thread for another day!

I guess I was thinking of podcasters in general, although Podshow represents a large chunk. Were are all the podcasters going to talk about equipment, software, techniques, etc.? And more specifically, where are all the Podshow podcasters going to discuss Podshow's issues? I can't seem to find 'em....

Wellllll.... I shouldn't tell you this, buuuut we have this secret little forum where we all get together and talk about all that cool stuff. But you have to pay dues. Or you could just shoot me the $10 and I'll put in a good word for you :D

Okay, I'm obviously just kidding. The fact is, there are many places that podcasters gather to discuss the issues of podcasting. Some read and write blogs and comment on those. Some use the forums of other directories, some use other show's forums or users groups. The internet's a pretty big place, so you'll have to dig around a bit.

It is true that the PCA community has died down a lot within the last few months, so you're not totally imagining things. I think that has a lot to do with many of the earlier members maturing (the mystery has gone away and they've "figured it out") or fading, and as a result, leaving or moving on.

One active community is over at Podcast Pickle, but it seems to be more of a social community than a techie community. Not to say you can't find help for your technical issues there, but those aren't the main topics of conversation, or so it seems. Still, it's run by some good people, and the community is by and large helpful, if not a little insular.

Yeah, how in the hell do you find your way around this site? How do you hook up with other like-minded people? You go to someone's podcast and there doesn't seem to be any way to view their profile! Mystifying...

Having a link to podcaster's profile would be a good idea, but probably a bit of extra work. But if you really want to know your podcaster, you can get to the podcaster's website from their podcast listing. That's the best way to get to know them, or to contact them.

The problem with linking to a podcaster's forum profile is that Podcast Alley does not make you register (and create a profile) to add a podcast. I like that, personally.

If you want to find like-minded people at the site, the best way is to go to the forums, see who is active, or just said something you like, and click on their name. You can get their profile that way, and most podcasters will have a link to their podcast there. Kind of backward, I guess, but not especially hard, either.

Thanks, WyethDigital, but I guess my confusion lies in the fact that Podcast Alley doesn't seem to be like (sheesh, should I say it?) PodOmatic in that PodOmatic is more easily navigable in a Myspace/social networking site kinda way. I've built up a good bit of traffic on there, but even though I've put my show on Podcast Alley (and Podshow) and Podcast Pickle I've gotten negligible attention on these sites, but not for lack of trying. For instance, on Podshow, I've dug all kindsa people who's stuff has interested me, but haven't gotten any kind of reciprocation at all. Now of course, you're smiling to yourself and sayin' "poor kid, doesn't even know that his cast sucks...", but if that were the case, I think, then I wouldn't be gettin' the traffic on PodOmatic. I mean, I'm talkin' ZILCHNADA on Podshow and Podcast Alley, and just breadcrumbs on the Pickle. Is there something I'm doin' wrong on these sites? I'm wondering if there's some kinda connectivity issue between my profile or cast, or that whatever level of membership I have doesn't allow me certain networking privleges or blahblahblah...or am I just looking at these sites in the wrong way, or what? I don't have much more hair to pull out!!!

I guess there are good things you could pull from all different types of sites. I do like this one more so however, because it seems to police its forums the best.

Well, first let me make a correction... you do sort of have to register at PCA to list your podcast if you want to be able to edit or claim your feed. It's been awhile since I've had to, so I forgot the process. My bad.

As for getting negligible hits from PodShow's site, I'm not entirely surprised, because, quite frankly, they've gotten too clever for their own good. They've got too many bells and whistles, IMHO.

Now, about the fact that you're not getting the hits from PCA and Pickle: To be quite honest, you got nobody to blame but yourself! And not because your cast sucks. I wouldn't know if it does, because you haven't put links in your signature field on your profile! I get quite a few hits from both places, because I make it easy to visit our site!

I have found the older posts are the best place to lurk for good info on this forum. Not a lot of fresh discussions going on recently. Just dig.

With the proliferation of the iPhone, and other mobile devices, the Podcast is be another influence on the media landscape.
The group is being formed to start a discussion amongst those who are already avid podcasters and those just starting.
We will also invite guest speakers and presenters to share their experiences with podcasting.

The term "podcasting" was first mentioned by Ben Hammersley in The Guardian newspaper in a February 2004 article, along with other proposed names for the new medium. It is a portmanteau of the words "pod"?derived from iPod, a brand of portable media player produced by Apple Computer (now Apple),?and "broadcasting".
