I'm using Soundcapture (abbreviated to SC) now so as to stream to mp3 directly from my source which is my soundcard. It works great but the only problem is the limitation for the lowest encoding rate which is 16kbs. Albeit most of you probably think that is quite little but I am creating an archive of voice and 8kbs will be fine quality.

Soundcapture uses the LAME mp3 encoder and SC is a front end to the LAME. That way no matter what comes out of the soundcard can be sent
to LAME and LAME will turn it into an mp3 stream or recording. LAME was made I think only for conversion of wav files but SC created a pipe so live sound could be created on the fly to mp3.

LAME will encode 8kbs but SC front end doesn't have a setting for 8kbs thus I don't know how to force it to tell LAME to encode at 8kb. LAME itself can't handle a live stream without SC.

Has anyone used a DOS front end , there are not many, to cause LAME to
encode an mp3 stream? And if so does your setup allow 8kbs? <= That's what I'm looking to do.

In case someone of you are intersted there is another program which will use LAME to create mp3 on the fly from sound card inputs. It's called FREE Hi-Q Recorder. And it will record to mp3 or other formats from a live stream.

It works at 8kbs up to 44.1+ but it's buggy with respect to how it handles memory and it's problematic due to crashing.

So I 'm asking if any of you are using a very simple front end to LAME which handles live audio. Thanks for some tips.

PS. I'm a novice at this and am only capturing audio for myself at this time. My background is an on site audio recording engineer as a youngster then getting into laboratory instrumentation later.
