Hi ~
Does anyone know how to grab an audio file off a website (in order to edit a clip from it and use it in a podcast)?
I've heard several podcasts use clips from TV shows, etc. in their shows. How do you do that? Do you need to have it on DVD first?

You probably want to download and use a free program called Audacity.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
It can record anything you can play through your computer via website or other media.
Best of luck-

Hey Jack ~
Thanks! We use Apple's GarageBand to record our podcast.
Thanks to you pointing me towards Audacity, I found that Audacity's site recommends programs like Audio Hijack (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/) or Wiretap Pro (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/) for this, for Mac users.

Look for "Mixer output" or "sound card output" in the place where it has "mic"
That should select your source sound. Then as you play, hit record.

Weird. In the spot where it should say "mic" it's just blank and it is greyed out so I can't do anything to it.

Could it be an incompatible sound card? Does the Audacity site mention preferred hardware?

If you can not save the file then you 'll have to stream it and record it in real time as you listen to it. Any program which records from your sound card will do this but not many of them will save to mp3 unless you're willing to pay because mp3 is proprietary and the owners want $$ for using it.
There is a setup using Soundcapture and LAME put in the same directory and running a command window (dos) like this:
soundcapture 60 filename.mp3
will cause your soundcard to save whatever you're hearing to an mp3 file called filename.mp3. That's the gyst of it.
Other programs like audacity will do this as will some
MSoft software and realplayer software. But each uses its own filetype to
save to.
Mp3 or mp4 are the two filetypes you should plan to save to. mp4 is also called mpeg and other names which apple is using with their electronics. But they're basically an mpeg/mp4 filetype with an extension which has a different .xxx name. Mp4 / mpeg can also encode video
