View Full Version : Advertising on a short podcast

One of my podcasts, One Minute How-To, averages about four minutes per show. I was offered an advertising deal, but I turned it down because it required a 40 second advertisement at the beginning of the show. I just couldn't do that to my listeners.
I was told that I'd never get anyone to allow their advertising to be placed at the end, and I don't know enough about this to know whether or not this is true (I have heard adverts at the end of some shows, so it's quite possible that this person was just ticked that I had turned them down).
Any ideas on this? Is there any hope for thinking of this in the future, or should I just put it out of my mind?

I'd say it's possible. However, it may not be the best spot, so don't ask for top dollar.
Just tell advertisers that you offer a spot at the end of your show and it's, "a real value at xx per thousand..." Seems to me this is a great spot for a smaller business or a business that just wants to dip a toe into non-traditional media.

I'm structuring The WildeBeat as nonprofit, so I can apply slightly different rules.
Here's what I'm offering prospective underwriters (public radio terminology for sponsors): I'll mention the name of their organization near the opening of the show ("...made possible by your company."), and then will give a slightly longer description of the company and thier URL between the end of the show content and the beginning of the closing credits and music ("...produced with funds provided by Your Company. This is what you make or do. YourCompany dot com.").
Everyone I've talked to thinks this is fair for a 10-minute show.

That sounds like an interesting idea and one to seriously consider.

I've come across the same issues. For the time being, I have just signed up for a couple of affiliate programs that pay decently, and I am going to do my own quick ads, at a length I prefer and hope for the best, and maybe someone will take me up on the affiliate offer. You know.. enter promo code..xxx..
I've been considering my audience, and refrained from any type of ad placement, but I think the time it takes me to do this has come to a point where it can no longer be a hobby that is costing me money with no return. I hate to ask for donations, and my last two requests have brought in $0.
So, I am going to start easy, and maybe do an ad on thurs/fri, and hope for the best. It will be quick, 15 seconds at the top of the show, like NPR does it.

You did well. I'm just looking into ads, but it's best to turn offers like this down.

Well, maybe you should ask your listeners.
That might
1) Get their permission for the ads
2) Trigger donations (if you're taking 'em).
