Rutter’s Ramblings is a podcast that seeks to cater to many tastes. It is released about twice a week and runs for about half an hour. Each episode features Troy discussing his life, giving his opinion (ranting) on political and social issues, some musical interludes and pop culture news.
Troy has been producing his podcast for about a year and the thing that I admired most about his show is the honesty of it. Troy has traditionally voted Republican although he now is moving away from this position to voting for independent candidates. Although my political position is probably more liberal than Troy’s, I respect where he is coming from because he is generally able to express his opinions in a well articulated manner without talking down at his audience. In recent shows Troy has given us his thoughts on the proposed plans in the US to put ‘R’ ratings on movies with smoking in them and some of his thoughts on US Federal politics.
In other parts of the show Troy will bring a more light-hearted feel to his podcast. I was amused by Troy’s apparent fascination (obsession?) with Lindsay Lohan. In recent shows there has been a ‘Lindsay Lohan Moment’ discussed in each episode. Examples of these include Lindsay declaring her 10 year plan or the fact that Lohan wants to take time off to travel.
Troy also discusses what has been happening in his life recently. It is this section of the show that I feel is the podcast’s Achilles heal. Troy’s thoughts about his life are interesting and as an audience we are interested in what is going on in his life (and his head). The problem is that too often these thoughts come across as a stream of consciousness and at times it is like Troy is having a conversation with himself (a soliloquy).
Overall Rutter’s Ramblings is a podcast that I would give a qualified recommendation to. Troy has a very engaging personality; however in its current form the show is trying to be too many things to too many people.
