Do you remember when you were thirteen, bored on a Saturday night, and started making prank phone calls to random numbers? Brad Crater apparently never grew out of that phase and we are generally richer for Brad’s lack of maturity and hacking skills. Fans of the show participate in an active community on the PLA website (http://www.phonelosers.org/); bad news for the unsuspecting deaf-relay operators and Blockbuster employees.
The sound quality of this show is very good and production-wise the show is usually well PLA Radioput together. PLA Radio is very erratic in putting out episodes and to date there are only 12 episodes available. On the show Brad plays a wide variety of prank calls and other practical jokes on unsuspecting victims. My favourite episode is Episode Four where Brad and a friend hack into a Movie Theatre’s phone line. It is hard for me to do the guys justice but it is very funny to hear a middle-aged woman be told, in a dead-pan voice, that the only movies being shown at the local family movie theatre are hard-core porn movies.
At other times Brad can take his prank calls and humour too far. One example of this is when Brad poses as an old lady’s grandson who has not been in contact with her for years. Patrick Melton of the Nobody Likes Onions podcast was another victim of a Brad Carter impersonation. Brad made a sound board of Patrick speaking from the NLO podcast and rang Patrick’s boss at night. ‘He’ then proceeded to verbally abuse Patrick’s boss using a soundboard of audio comments of Patrick Melton cussing and mouthing off. Patrick’s boss responded by trying to talk ‘Patrick’ down from his apparent bad crystal meth trip or nervous breakdown. While I don’t think Brad is a malicious person, it is clear that PLA frequently pushes the boundaries of humour and good taste.
If you like your humour a little left of centre then you will probably enjoy the PLA Radio podcast. Brad’s personality goes a long way to providing this very unique form of entertainment and the calls and pranks are generally not mean-spirited or meant to cause any long-term harm to the victim.
