View Full Version : Mic vs Line, or 1/8in -> XLR connector

So I took the leap and bought a mixer - everything I've recorded so far has been via a usb headset.

(The mixer is a Yamaha MW10)

The mixer has mic-level XLR inputs, and line-level 1/4in inputs.

I didn't realise the 1/4in inputs were line-level. I thought they were mic-level, so I figured I could use a lavellier lapel mic (with a 1/8in plug) using a simple 1/8in -> 1/4in connector.

I quickly realised this isn't working - I can hear it, but only with the gain turned all the way up and the lapel mic infront of my mouth.

So...is there such a thing as a 1/8 to XLR connector, or 1/4in to XLR connector?

Is that gonna work?

Yes.... you'll probably go from a XLR to 1/4, then to 1/8. You'll also need to make sure your balancing is in order.

I think he wanted 1/4 > XLR like this...

Yes, thanks, that type of connector looks like it'll do the job.

What does "make sure balancing is in order" mean (in practical terms?)

(I have a (recent) grasp on balanced v unbalanced.)

Side topic: Does a 'headphone jack' match the voltage of a 'mic in'? If I wanted to bring anything else in from a headphone out, would that have to go into a mic in as well?
