I like your show, but am disappointed with the 9/11 video and jokes.
I lost a close friend on that day and it still hurts to this day. I can't laugh about it.

many people will undoubtably be pissed and my conscience is telling me to yell at you making an animation of something so vile... but **** my conscience, that made me laugh xD
That's from one of the video's reviews. That sort of sums it up, doesn't it: **** my conscience, that made me laugh.
There would have been a time in my life, not so long ago, when I would have become angry about a thing like this. Now it just makes me tired, as if it's too much trouble to even argue. After all, what is the point? NLO wants attention, and this is certainly an attention-getter. The show's fan base will undoubtedly find the video funny, so congratulations and mission accomplished. Those hearty defenders of our First Amendment rights will yell from the rooftops that you have the right to say anything you like, and so you do.
So come one, come all and give the boys in Florida the attention they so desire. I am just reminded that we have come so far and so many have suffered so much for what seems so little. The great things of our lives, the things that people remember and honor in future years, are not made of this stuff.
You may say that it's just humor and that I and others like me should lighten up. If it was only about humor, I would. But it's about much more and if you don't see that, then we really have become Eliot's Hollow Men.

I understand what you're saying. I just think it's in poor taste to laugh about something that is still so sensitive. I know that's part of what you do at NLO because I listen to your show myself, but I find it hard to laugh about 9/11 when those bastards took one of my best friends.

Patrick, you truly are a comedy pioneer.
So how much of the proceeds from your t-shirt sales are going to help the children who lost parents in 9/11?
I mean, you wouldn't want to be part of a company that exploits the tragedy of 9/11 for their personal gain would you? I mean the whole point of your little cartoon was to satirize and shine a spotlight on those companies that profit from a tragedy, right? Right? Because you wouldn't want to be a hypocrite, would you?
I thought not.

You are not going to change their attitudes with online debate so why bother giving them more exposure.

I think it's that old "shooting fish in a barrel" thing, Tim. Sure it's easy, and there's no real sport, but it sure is fun sometimes!
For me though, this is so beyond the pale that I've deliberately avoided jumping head first into it. Like I said, shooting fish in a barrel can be fun, but not when the fish is bogarting the gun while you shoot.

This show is for a unique group of people that understand that the world is there to be laughed at; there is no situation that can't be made into a joke. I guaranty that we, fans of NLO, who understand that live a much more relaxed, and over-all better life, then those who can't laugh at life’s misfortunes. I'm sad to see that you people are so up tight about everything. Being mad causes stress and that’s not healthy, so learn to relax. As soon as you can understand how we view life I invite you to come join us at NobodyLikesOnions.com and if you feel that we are in the wrong and everything the show, and its fans, stand for is wrong then please be mature and don't listen. I get mad when I go to a church and listen to a man preach at me, I don't get all up tight about it and go complain to everyone I can find, I'm mature enough to just not go to church.
So I beg you to enjoy life a little bit more and to laugh a little bit more and if your conscious prohibits you from doing so then please don't listen.

And this would accomplish what? The priest is going to have a magical turn around and forget everything he's believed in for his whole life? No, nothing is going to happen, just like nothing is going to happen from people bitching about this. I'm not going to stop finding 9/11 or abducting children funny just cause someone finds it offensive, and I wouldn't expect anyone else to change because I found them offensive. Well Patrick, let me see if I can make sense of it for you. Admittedly, it might be a little abstract for ya': Brillo's are scratchy and irritating. You're scratchy and irritating.

I don't listen to Patrick's show. I don't go out of my way to comment on Patrick's show. Patrick came here to promote his cartoon and sell T-shirts. Why should I pretend that it doesn't offend me? If you find it funny, and Patrick's brand of humor funny, then good for you and good for Patrick. Just remember however, that his (and yours) are not the only views out there.
You're probably right when you say Patrick won't change his stance or his comedy. But that has nothing to do with anything. When you exercise your right to free speech, you have to take the lumps that come with it. The Constitution doesn't say anything about free hugs when you speak your piece, so you probably shouldn't expect any.
And this has nothing to do with how "big" a person is, or how Patrick's detractors should be walking away and taking the high road, especially since the toad who's whining that no one "gets" his comedy is cynically selling T-shirts to exploit the tragedy he's joking about. No, the time to be "big" about it in this thread was over the second Patrick hawked his T-shirts. I can live with a harmless cartoon. My issue is the T-shirts.

There IS humor in everything if you want to look for it. However, recognizing that there's humor in a tragic event versus making it a part of your podcast are two different things.
If you've ever spent any time around little kids, you know that they are curious about everything. Thus, when they see someone in a wheelchair, they may want to know what happened and they may even ask you about it loudly. But as we get older, we learn that certain questions shouldn't be asked.
It's the same way with humor. I've heard people say things at funerals that have made me want to howl with laughter. I didn't because it's just not done (well, at least not at any funeral I've ever attended; YMMV).

Why is my podcast some holy grail where "certain questions shouldn't be asked"? That's ridiculous. Just because you choose to censor your true thoughts and feelings (which is called being dishonest) doesn't mean everyone does. I pride myself on having a show where nothing is out of bounds or unavailbale for discussion.
The only time I have a problem is when people with the inability to draw a line between my intentions and my ability to find humor in topics (such as yourself) can't handle it.

I didn't imply that it was some sort of Holy Grail; in fact, I don't remember mentioning your podcast at all in my previous post. And obscuring your true feelings isn't always dishonesty; sometimes, we do this out of respect for others. I guess you're not married, are you, Patrick? If you were, you would understand what I mean.
I've always found it curious when people are proud of the fact they have no restraint. It's nothing new or inventive.
Patrick
Oct 11th, 2006, 07:18 PM
Respect for others? It's podcast - if you don't like it, don't listen.
And you imply that if I was married I'd have restraint. Does that mean your wife restrains you? Sounds like a hell of a relationship.
I'm not married, but I've dated and had girlfriends, and they have always been of the same opinion. Don't lump every married person in to one group just because you're a pussy. The group you belong in isn't "married people" - it's "people that are afraid to say what's on their mind".
And you can call it respect all you want, but it's a societal block instilled by fear of what people will think.
I do a stupid podcast. If you don't like it, don't listen. I'm not going to water it down so you can listen without feeling guilty.

Who is being exploited by Patrick's T-shirts? I admit I find the whole thing a bit off and I personally wouldn't wear one (out of respect for the feelings of others primarily) but I don't see that anyone's life is fundamentally worse because the t-shirts exist.
Do I think Patrick is insensitive in selling such shirts? Yes. I think that living in society with other humans is about making compromises and generally respecting the views and feelings of others in the hope that they will respect my views and feelings...to that end sometimes I do things I don't want to (like go to the in-laws for holidays and say nice things about the boss' daughter's finger-painting and refraining from saying "oh...you've put on so much weight you fat slob" to my colleagues) because it makes things run smoother. I think being Patrick and constantly defending yourself and your actions must be exhausting and I don't understand why anyone wants to live like that but it's clearly a choice he's made and he's clearly comfortable with that choice.
So, he's insensitive to (or uninterested in) the feelings of others. But I don't see how he's exploiting anyone.

A tragic event is being used to make money, Bernadette. And to top it off, Mr "I dated some girls once" Melton claims to be lampooning those that do the same thing. At best, it's hypocritical opportunism, and at it's most rank, it is exploitation. Exploitation of a tragedy for monetary gain. Who's being exploited? The dead. The memories of the dead. The horrible act itself. The list goes on. Has someone's life been made worse? Hard to say. Depends on who you ask.

I assume you're having a go at me (God it must be truly exhausting being you...you even have to have a go at people who stick up for you).
I didn't say your show was insensitive. I did listen and I think I did a fair review http://www.podcastfanatic.com/nobody_likes_onions.html and so did you back in June.
What I said selling the t-shirts was insensitive. You came in the PCA forums to tell us all about your t-shirts...you didn't just leave it on the show (if you had I'd be happily ignorant) so I think you're fair game.
Do I think being insensitive is the worst thing in the world? No.
Do I think everyone should shut the heck up about the t-shirts and let you make your money however the heck you want even if it's insensitive? Yes.
Do I think there are about 9,000,000 more important things in the world to be concerned about than the fact some dude is selling insensitive rags (let's face it..all t-shirts become rags to clean the car with sooner or later)? Yes
But none of those things change the fact that selling t-shirts which you know are going to upset the majority of people in the community you inhabit, and marketing them in a forum like this one rather than leaving it in your show with your fans, is bloody insensitive. I don't agree with Eric that it's exploitative but it is inconsiderate of the feelings of others (which is what being insensitive means).

Oh well, we were all young once. I say let the kid have as much fun as he can, people are in way too much of a hurry to grow up.
I think I would be upset if I really thought Patrick believed the stuff he calls jokes. The guy is a comedian and comedians lie all the time for the sake of the joke.
The people who get upset need to remember just because "you" don't think it's funny doesn't mean "all" do not think it's funny. Free country, and that includes poor taste, like or hate it.
I saw the cartoon and I heard the show. I didn't laugh at that part. That's all it was to me. Not funny. *cowbell* Then he came back with the funny later.

Look, I don't care so much if you laugh at 9/11. Like I said before, that's not my problem. The T-shirts are my problem.
The only reason my shirts are a problem is because no one makes your size.
Look I stayed out of this for as long as I could but that comment was a bridge too far.
Patrick you are the personification of irony and you don't even know it. :)
Hint: t-shirt, too big, you

One more thing, Patrick; you don't have to change your show for me because I've never listened to it. In fact, I think you have FAR fewer listeners than you let on or that your "votes" here reflect. But that's for another thread.

Luckily, you're nobody and don't know the first thing about how many listeners I have.
You guys continue your riveting discussion on what I "don't get" and how me using free speech is offensive to others.
I'll be over in the corner crying. Seriously.

Awww, Patrick, are you a little touchy about your numbers? Hey, I'm just expressing my views, right? Not holding back and all?
The fact is you probably don't have any better grasp on your numbers than the rest of us do. And while it's certainly not the end-all be-all of podcasting, I don't see you anywhere in iTunes. Are you listed there? I mean, golly, even a "nobody" podcast like mine shows up near the top of the rankings in my category. You can say that iTunes doesn't matter, and maybe it doesn't, but the popular podcasts are all there, so it would seem to be some sort of reflection of the popularity of one's show.
Just a thought.

I'm not touchy about my numbers at all. I have one of the most popular shows out there. It's not the most popular, and probably never will be, but it smokes yours, and 99% of the other podcasts here. That's just a fact.
A grasp on my numbers? I know the number of downloads my shows get. I know the number of unique IP addresses that download my show. That's all anyone can really know. So, yeah, wow, you got me there.
Being in iTunes or not being in iTunes is a reflection of the popularity of a show? Wow. I had no idea that simply being listed in a directory gave such validation. How does being in a listing where anyone can simply submit their show and get listed make you big, again?

I'm glad you believe it smokes mine. Be that as it may, iTunes is not just a directory; it is the means by which most people discover podcasting. I don't necessarily like this, but it's a fact. So you not being listed there tells me almost everything I need to know.
Patrick, I've seen you post here many times about your big, scary numbers. Why don't you enlighten us? If you're more popular than 99% of the podcasts out there, let's see some proof; you should be proud of your numbers. That fact is you don't know how popular my show is or any of the people who post here. Let's see the numbers behind your ego.

Actually, Torrent's about the only one that doesn't.
But you're hardly the one to complain about shirt sizes, Roseanne.
Just in case you don't get it (seeing as how you're a little bit slow and all): Roseanne (Barr) + Fat + loud + shrill = Patrick

Hey, way to contradict yourself.
Despite what you say, I've maybe ONCE posted my numbers here, like a year ago. I don't go around talking about my numbers - you brought it up. But I guess you think everyone's too stupid to notice that.
Once again, how does me being listed or not being listed in iTunes tell you anything? It's no indication of success. The fact that I'm almost certain that my show has more listeners coupled with the fact that I'm not listed in iTunes - the place you say is where "most people discover podcasts" - must really be some indication of the gap in popularity of your show and mine. If I was in iTunes, I mean, sheesh, we probably wouldn't even be talking, I'd be so popular and famous, right?
Maybe one day I'll be listed there among the greats like "Today in History".
Fingers crossed!

My guess is the smart folks at itunes banned Patrick Melton and his low-brow show for saying things like he wants to stick his dick in a three year old's mouth and making fun of tragic events such as 9/11.
Just a hunch.

...But none of those things change the fact that selling t-shirts which you know are going to upset the majority of people in the community you inhabit, and marketing them in a forum like this one rather than leaving it in your show with your fans, is bloody insensitive. I don't agree with Eric that it's exploitative but it is inconsiderate of the feelings of others (which is what being insensitive means)...
I must disagree here. Selling the shirts is not only insensitive, but exploitive. It is exploiting the tragedy for monetary gain. All the while his little crapimation purports to be sticking it to the companies that profit off the tragedy. Oh wait! That's irony!
I'm sure all the victims' surviving family and friends who come across this little marketing scheme won't feel exploited at all. Especially the black ones- I'm surprised Patrick didn't mention filling the tower salt and pepper shakers with kosher salt so that he can pretend jews are falling out everytime they shake the tower.
I also hope Matt Stone and Trey Parker don't feel exploited by such a crappy and blatant rip-off of Towely, (http://www.choiceshirts.com/images/PL/-0/PL-00557A-md.jpg) the dooby smoking talking towel from South Park. Seriously, try being original you idiot. Of course I could be mistaken and Paddy's voice just normally sounds pre-pubuscent and squeaky.
Later,
Evil.

Stop teasing Patrick, we know only time can "learn ya." We were all young once. Nothing you can do about it but not die. Besides, if you died, who would we have to make fun of?

I was that young once, but for God's sake, I hope I was never that defensive and stupid.

I don't hate NLO because I've never listened to it; my only exposure to Patrick is through this forum. And I don't hate that his video is getting attention; I hope lots of people see it, because light is a great disinfectant.

I hope lots of people see it too so they can see Patrick Melton's true colours.
Maybe then he will start to see that he can't say whatever he wants and excuse it as only being a joke and people shouldn't take what he says so seriously.
You are affecting those around you with your actions Patrick. I agree with free speech insofar as it doesn't affect those around you. However there is such a thing as common decency and respect. Patrick Melton is affecting everyone (eg. surviving family and friends) who was impacted by 9/11 with this little money-grabbing stunt.
Patrick Melton also affects people when he threatens to do things like stick his dick in a three year old's mouth.
Patrick Melton if you have the freedom of speech to say this crap then have the balls to own your own words Patrick Melton.
Understand that you might find this garbage funny but there are real people out there who are affected by the drivel coming from your mouth that you try to pass off as some kind of lame excuse for comedy.

well hopefully this generations red buttons and henny youngman will start a podcast so you guys will have a "good" and "appropiate" comedy podcast.
Have hope though. The way Louie Anderson's career is going, podcasting would be a step up for him.

I guess I'm just completely validating the guys point, but "That 3 year old needs a d*ck in her mouth" would be a hilarious t shirt. with a picture and everything? how is that not funny?
