I do a Linux podcast (www.linuxreality.com) and I have two separate feeds, one for the mp3 files and one for the ogg vorbis files of my podcast. What I would like to do is add the ogg vorbis files to the mp3 feed so they both appear on the homepage as a direct download. If I do this, however, then both media files will appear in the primary feed, which is the feed that goes to iTunes.

So, two questions:

1. Will adding a second media file enclosure for the ogg files break the feed for iTunes (since iTunes does not recognize ogg files)
2. If not, does it matter what order the files and enclosures appear in the feed? If iTunes takes the first file it finds, and if the first file is an ogg file, will this break it? Or does iTunes take the last file it finds? Or does it not matter?

Thanks!

I see your feeds are handled by feedburner, so maybe you could try their forum too.

I could be wrong, but from what I can tell, the RSS feed is going to choose the first media format in your blog post and ignore the rest. That is, the RSS media enclosure will be solely applied to the first file format. The remaining dowloadable alternatives will only appear as links.

I don't think iTunes or Ipods support ogg vorbis, although I think there is a plug-in for iTunes. Maybe all that has changed though. I don't really know anything about MAC products. So if compatibility with iTunes is an issue, you will have to list your MP3 file first. Feedburner will ignore the ogg link (for the purposes of creating media enclosures) so I doubt you will experience problems with iTunes as a result.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for! I appreciate it very much. And, yes, that's what I am trying to do. The ogg files should be downloadable links only, not appear in the main feed (I have a separate feed for the oggs alone that people can subscribe to).

All I want is to have both the mp3 and the oggs appear as downloadable links on the blog page without disrupting the feed for iTunes purposes. Thanks!

I hope it works out for you, and if so, please post your results.

I'm presently working on a new video show, and I was confronted with the same problem a few days ago. For the purposes of iTunes compatibility, I wanted my m4v file to be enclosed, and the other formats (wmv, mpg, etc.) to just appear as links. It worked on my end at least, but I could have just been lucky. Hopefully, you get the same results for your mp3/obb issue.
