I'm looking to start maintaining a couple of mailing lists for sending out bits and pieces - the occasional show update for instance.

Can anyone give me a recommendation on a good service? Is this something I need to pay for or are there free services available?

I suggest installing your own.

I've been using DADA Mail for years, which is an intuitive web-based e-mail list management system, and runs on any hosting account that can execute custom CGI scripts.

It's a powerful application allowing for as many lists as you can create, HTML or Text templates, interface template customization, great blacklist management, subscribe and unsubscribe features, and allows for delay mailings.

Installing only take about 5 min accompanied with great documentation. You'll be happy… Going over 10k subscribers it has never failed me.
