View Full Version : iTunes version 7 a major failure

Has anyone been around Apple's itune forum lately? They've got a lot of p#$@ssed off customers over there. The new version 7 has so many bugs that it's impossible to think that they weren't caught during pre-release testing.

I uploaded it to my ibook with no problems, however once I tried uploading it to my pc, all hell broke loose. It won't recognize my external audio interface (never a problem with previous versions), so now everytime I want to hear anything on itunes, I have to switch my audio settings on the control panel (major pain). Also there are a lot of folks complaining about distorted playbacks, song files downloading twice, etc.

I don't remember ever seeing so many problems on a major software like what they're dealing with now. :?

I had no problems installing it on my PC except for the fact that it completely broke the nice seemless integration with iPodder Juice. Not digging that.

No issues with iTunes 7 ... the only issue I had was when it updated the iPod software and my laptop would no longer recognize my Nano ... luckily iTunes recognized the issue and restored my Nano ... whew!

I don't like that podcasts and vidcasts are not in my music library, they've been "banished" to their own directory. I liked listening to a podcast, then music and then another podcast. I don't like how V7 has segregated them.

I agree with that. V6 didn't do this.

I usually delete podcasts after I've listened to them in their entirety. But I don't usually get the chance to listen to longer podcasts straight through without interruption. So the iTunes feature to automatically deleted them after they've been listened to doesn't work for me.

I just noticed that this morning while I was syncing to my ipod, I realized that 2 podcast I hadn't finished listening to were gone. Guess I'll have to download them again later when I get home.

I only have 3 things I don't like.

1) BIG Memory leaks in 7.
2) Minor coverflow bugs (not out of the ordinary)
3) And I want Aqua Back!

iTunes 7.0.1 can't come soon enough, but once at least the Memory leaks and a few other minor bugs get worked out, then it'll just be left to people wanting X appearance/layout back.

I want Aqua back!

I have definitely had a number of crashes with iTunes 7 on my MacBook Pro. But what they changed in iTunes for handling podcasting did not effect me as I manage my podcasts with a series of smart playlists, I don't like their default interface.

Didn't we go through this same circus with iTunes 6? If I remember correctly, it took Apple a couple of dot releases to get that one stable too. I'm ignoring the update nag screen until 7.01 comes out.

It's still there, you just have to have the name of the show highlighted to get the button to appear. Personally I prefered it the old way.

I'm more anoyed about the taking away the top 100 for each category in the iTunes store AGAIN. Didn't they hear how pissed off we all got about that when they did it a few weeks ago?

As for the program itself, I've not had a single problem with it on the Mac, but the PC version is quite bad. Apple just don't make good Windows software.

It must really suck to run a software company. I love the fact they've separated out the podcast library from the music library. You can't please all of the people all of the time eh?

I agree with Bernadette. I hated that it didn't do it before. I think it's great.

One man's garbage ....

I also prefer having everything separated, and I think the way it is laid out on the left is superior. The Downloads section is also much better, especially when I'm downloading all my new podcasts, and it seems to download faster than previous versions.

The only issue I can think of right now is that it takes me two tries to disconnect my iPod. I keep getting the message that it can't eject because files are still in use. Is anybody else having that problem?

I have never used the podcast interface for listening to podcasts, I create a smart playlist:

podcast is true
playcount = 0
kind contains audio

I think sync this list with my iPod when I am using that to listen

and then another list for ones I have listened to

podcast is true
playcount > 0
kind contains audio

which I use to delete old shows

I have a similar pair for video podcasts (kind does not contain audio)

Except for the memory leaking and the crashing problems that some folks are complaining about, a quick mouse click or two in the preferences pane should fix most of the problems.

My Smart Playlist for podcasts seems to catch them just fine. That must take care of the auto-deleting folks are complaining about because it hasn't been a problem for me yet.

I'm on a PowerPC iMac and I haven't had any crashes or hang ups. My iPod ejects just fine, and aside from not seeming to have a master library (vs all separated), I like the program fine.

However, I do NOT like the disappearance of the Top 100 by category. I suggest every podcaster that reads this goes to the Apple Podcaster Forum, logs in, and asks (politely) to get that feature back. And if they don't do it, then be less polite. It's hard enough getting seen in such a massive directory with so many "big boys" getting top billing for spewing their repurposed TV and radio segments without that little Top 100 bone left for us!

Unfortunately, not recognizing my Aardvark audio interface drivers is more than just a few mouse clicks. Everytime I want to even open iTunes on my pc I have to first go to the control panel and change my audio playback/recording to the old drivers that came with the pc. Then re-start the pc, then open iTunes to do whatever I need. Once I'm done and I wanna continue working with the Aardvark I have to go back into control panel and change everything back. I didn't have this problem with any other versions of iTunes before.

The only up side is that I'm only using itunes on my pc to store music I buy from them, and updating them to my ipod, which is not very often. For podcast subscriptions and syncing those to my ipod,I'm still using my mac.

I'm sure that it is. I should have qualified my statement a bit. I was referring more to the problems of podcast organization, and not the driver issues.

No issues at all on my XP Pro system. Seems like there are more issues on the Mac version. Silly if you think about it.

I've installed it on three different machines... two Macs and one PC and it works fine on all of them.

The only thing that I found interesting was that I was getting ready to stream audio from my Mac Powerbook to my Stereo via Airport Express using the old version (something I do often) and it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the new version of iTunes. I clicked on no, and my network stream ceased to work. Reboots didn't help. It just quit working. I went a head and upgraded... and it worked fine.

Could it be that was designed to force my hand?

I am a little confused at the mass hysteria over iTunes 7...I installed it on my PC and Mac as well as my MacBook and it works like a charm on all of them. I like the new iPod device window, the fact you can now back up your entire library to CD/DVD, the download window where you can arrange the download order, the different view modes, I can sync my multiple ipods on one machine, update/restore ipod right in iTunes, find missing album art...there are actually lots of cool new features in there..and so far they work for me...

It works fine on my newest PC but anything less robust gets swamped and crawls.

The question is isn't whether or not podcasters are having trouble. It's whether or not listeners are.

iTunes 7 actually FIXED a lot of the problems I have with podcast subscriptions (as a listener).

The only thing I don't like about it is I can't figure out how to specify how many shows to keep on an individual podcast level (which I used to be able to do)...I can only set it globally.

Other than that it works fine for me on a G5 iMac, an Intel MacMini, and an Pentium XP laptop.

Actually, I've been noticing that on my system it's having more trouble downloading new podcasts. On Itunes6 I could have it set up a dozen podcasts and it would faithfully download them using whatever time it took. On ITunes7, it seems if the podcast is taking over a minute to download it dumps it and decides to try another time. :(

Well the new update patch finally got itunes to recognize my audio drive. Now I don't have to change from one driver to another whenever I want to launch itunes. Hopefully this update also fixed some of the other problems people were having like the bad audio playback etc.

I'm getting really chuffing annoyed by this.

Just upgraded to 7.0.1 and it's still the same. Very flakey about whether it updates my iPod or just hangs.

I sometimes get an 'autoplay' window - what's that about?

(XP, non-professional version).

I would like to add that I have had no problems with this iTunes update. Not yet, anyway.
