Forgive my ignorance, but I am trying my best to simply download and listen to an audio podcast. I'll learn video later; right now I have to figure the audio step out.
I downloaded and installed WinPodder. Now, for me to listen to an audio podcast from podcastalley.com; I know that I must copy/paste the url of the podcast into the "feed" box in WinPodder. After than, I simply single click on the icon and:
it should start downloading at that time?
once download is complete, it will automatically play the audio file?
I apologize for such a basic question bit - I'M LOST!

First things first. You have to set the schedule (or use the default settings) of WinPodder in order to efficiently download podcasts. I don't use WinPodder, so I couldn't tell how to do that, but if it's like 99.9% of podcatchers, it ought to have the ability to do that. Once you do that, WinPodder should do it exactly when and how you told it to.
Now, I don't want to sound like I'm splitting hairs, but I thought I should clarify this since you're so new to it. There's a difference between the podcast's website URL and the podcast's feed URL.
You need to enter the address of the feed into WinPodder. The feed address will often end in "rss.xml" so it will look like:
http://www.myfavoritepodcast.com/rss.xml
Some feeds, like mine, are rerouted through a tracking company's service, so the feed doesn't always end in the typical rss.xml.
As long as you get the right address into your program, it should work like a dream. Incidentally, video podcasts work the same way. Just like an audio podcast, you need a program to collect the files and a program capable of playing the file format.
hope this helps

If you download Itunes instead, most podcasts offer one click downloads so you don't have to do anything other than click a button. Give it a try at www.bigshowradio.com =)

And if he used iTunes he wouldn't need to worry about getting the vast majority of video podcasts out there, since most are in the QuickTime iPod format, anyway. Well, the most important ones (http://www.howtogirl.com/howtogirl/how_to_podcast/how_to_podcast.html) are, in any case ;)
