Hi, I am trying to find the best way to record phone interviews for a podcast. I currently have a Marantz 670 which (if possible) I would like to record the calls to. I also have a Skype account so was wondering how I go about hooking my Windows PC up to the Marantz to record phone calls. Do I need to go through a mixer I assume?
Or is it better to not use Skype and instead use an analog phone and something like a "Broadcast Host Hybrid"?

For each of my One Minute How-To shows, I record myself with my Marantz (it's a 660), and use Total Recorder ($12) to record the Skype end. If I start the two recording at the same time then it's a snap to drop them into Audacity and put them together (even if I don't, repositioning is very easy). By doing things this way I have two completely separate tracks, which is important because I work them differently (if the two are together then you run into some processing problems).
Cheers -

SoliCall (www.solicall.com) is an excellent tool I am using and it works with all softphones (including Skype, Yahoo Messenger & Google Talk).

I use a mixer.
Feed both you and skype to the recorder, feed just you back to the caller, and I listen to the same channel as the recorder on my headphones.
Google "mix minus" or skype me if you need suggestions on mixers.

Here is what I do.
I run the headphone OUT into the LINE IN.
I then go into the windows mixer, take the WAVE OUT slider and move the PAN all the way to the left or right.
This results in ME being in both speakers, and the intervieww just in one. This makes it really easy to edit, or mute things etc. If I'm feeling perky, I will run hotrecorder as well (which completely separates both channels, but also occasionallt crashes).

Using a mixer is an easy way, since most have more than one main out option.
I'm not using a Marantz (yet). I use my mixer and two sound cards (well one firewire interface) then I use one just for Skype and send it a mim-minus.

I've just been setting up a mixer. It's a little tricky but I think I got it last night.
I'm not sure why Dave is suggesting to record himself on BOTH channels and the caller on one. The 'traditional' method is to record yourself on ONE channel and the caller on the other.
Then you can mute or adjust the volume of either channel independently.
I'm recording on a little iRiver T30 using the Stereo Out of the mixer.
To this point, I've been using PrettyMay to record. The quality is fine (64K max) but (and this is a BIG 'but') is was often sending my CPU up to 100% which was killing the quality of the Skype call, and even causing the call to be dropped. When the call drops, the recording is lost. That is a disaster and was the motivation for me dropping some bucks on a mixer.

Hi Nufsed,
I can't imagine being a podcaster without a mixer. Recording an interview solely on the computer is akin to speeding in the fast lane, knowing the inevitable crash might be around the next corner. In addition to the mixer in my studio, I have use a portable mixer while on the road, recording on both the PC as well as the Marantz 660.
For portable laptop use, I use the TAPCO Link.USB (2-channel 24-Bit/96kHz USB Audio Interface w/ Mackie-designed Mic Preamps). One great feature is the power comes from the USB port, and of course has XLR as well as TRS ports.

I ordered some extras (still unopened in orignal boxes) and will offer them for a great price to fellow podcasters if anyone is interested - EMAIL or PM me if interested. These are great while on the road and fine for basic home podcasting.
Warm Regards, Michael

Before I got my mixer, I used SAM to record my phone call conversations - http://www.kishkish.com/sam/?lang=en
I still use SAM for my voicemail recordings through Skype.
