I'm keen to get podcasting but I'm coming up against some problems, read on....

When I try and listen to a track in Audacity through my headset I get an error message saying "Error whilst opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."

Whilst trying to record I get a message saying "Error whilst opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate."

I'm on OSX 10.4.7 and using Audacity with a Logitech 250 USB headset.

In System Preferences>Sound I have Output set to Logitech USB Headset and Input also set to Logitech USB Headset.

In Audacity Preferences I have Playback Device set to Logitech USB Headset and Recording Device set to Logitech USB Headset.

The headset is plugged into a USB port on the back of my tower so there are no hubs involved.

Why am I unable to listen and record using my headset?

I've noticed that the headset works fine with iTunes, Quicktime, e-mail alerts etc but when playing a song in the VLC application it plays through the built in speaker in my G4 tower.

Anyone know what's going on and is there a fix?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

"Error whilst opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.".

You mention checking everything but you don't mention checking the sample rate like the message tells you.

If the sample rate on Audacity is set at 48000hz, for example, but your sound device (headphones) are only capable of 44100hz then they won't work.

I used a number of different sample rates, right down to the lowest at 8000, and it made no difference.

Look at how many bits, as in 8 bit, 16 bit, or 24 bit

It's should probably be 16 bit or less.

Issue resolved. I've no idea why, but if I switched mute on and then off again in System Preferences>Sound everything then works fine.
