View Full Version : iTunes re-downloading old episodes

Is there anything I can do to stop iTunes re-downloading old episodes of podcasts I am subscribed to?
At the moment it seems like lots of shows I listen to are doing something odd with their feeds and old episodes are showing up in iTunes as new episodes. I've got the When New Episodes Are Available set to Download Most Recent One but it would seem that with the feed being changed in some way it appears to iTunes as if it is a new episode.
I have the bandwidth to spare but it's still kind of annoying to have old episodes that I've already listened to re-appear on my 'puter (I tend to do my downloading overnight so I'm not sitting at the 'puter ready to stop an episode from downloading).
Any ideas or do I just have to put up with it?

I think this happens when the 'caster alters their feed. I don't believe it's Itunes.

i do believe this is in relation to some of the problems feedburner has had recently. nothing to do with itunes. it just does what it's told to do by you or the subscribed feed.

i just realized that it really sucks how you do have to put up with it. we are so dependent on others nowadays to do things correctly.
i dunno maybe it's just too late for me.....

I had the same problem as Bernadette. I refreshed the podcast list and when the list of duplicate episodes came up (they were greyed out and had the "Get" button by them), I highlighted the duplicates and deleted them before they downloaded. I then refreshed the list to see if they showed up again and they didn't.
Maybe it'll work for you.

I think josh is right as I know a LOT of podcasters (us included) had to recently alter a specific feedburner "feature" due to issues it created in feeds.
Sorry if The Unharshed Mellow is in this group of redownloaders.

I tried that evil but some shows are still doing it.
I'm on the road at the moment using...errr...borrowed wi-fi so I've stopped downloading anything until I get back home. Will see what I can sort out then.
Josh - it's ok - really - don't get too depressed - it's not the end of the world - honest

I've gotten this with some of the podcasts I listen to, and it was slowing down my ability to surf the net due to my connection. So I changed the iTunes setting to do nothing when new episodes are available. This way the episodes don't download automatically but they show up in my directory, and I can only download the ones that are supposed to be there.

This is why I keep everything on my own site. It’s a bit more work, but I have control. I don’t have to worry about lybsyn going down again or screwing up my stats or feedburner messing something up and being a PIA for my listeners.
And unless you’re hosting huge files, or in the 10,000+ listener range, it doesn’t cost any more to do it that way.

I'm having the same problem with Juice, which didn't do it before, which confirms that it's not an iTunes problem.

This is an ongoing problem. There are several ways in which the symptom can arise (changed GUID, etc.)
The only fix I know of for the symptom in iTunes is to set
Edit -> Preferences -> Podcasts -> When new episodes are available
to "Download the most recent one"
This will prevent a download storm.
Only downside I know of to this setting is when a feed purposefully adds several new episodes at the same time. When that happens you will have to manually "Get" the additional episodes.

But then again, how hard is pressing the "Get" button?
