Alright I am new here, so I'll start off by saying hi and introducing myself.

I'm Jordan, I'm a college student and I live in Montreal. Right now I am in Europe for the summer which is part of what my problem is.

Before I left my friends and I were always trying to get a podcast going but never ended up getting anything off the ground for various reasons, often involving a bad setup.

We have some pretty good equipment actually, all our equipment was givin to us from radio stations since it was stuff that they dont use anymore, I dont know any brands of the stuff wee've got but I am googling to find you pictures :P

We have 1 of these
http://www.chucklevins.com/productimages/microphones/studiomics/re20.gif

We have 2 of these Neumanns
http://www.fxpansion.com/pics/RoomMic_NeumannU87.JPG

1 of these I know its Sennheiser (i remember the brand because I use to sell headphones :P)
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/hires/md421-II_hires.jpg

And then 2 more Sony mics which arent all that great.

This voice processor

And this mixer which I really hate because it isn't enough lines.

But the trick here is we are trying to make a recording studio/podcast studio in one, and we are trying to keep it as budget as possible because we are kind of running low on money.

But the idea is to be able to connect all of our equipment to be able to do some multi track recording.

Idealy we would be able to have 2 possible setups.
1 where we would be able to have 5 mics set up in the room so that we could do a podcast, where we could possibly bring in someone over the phone (which would probabally just be someone on speaker phone so its not that big of a deal to add)

But the second where it gets more confusing.
We also want to be able to record music. This set up is a bit more confusing we need to be able to hook up all this
1 Guitar
1 Guitar
1 Guitar (Or Mic depending)
1 Bass
1 Vocal Mic
1 Vocal Mic
1 Keyboard
1 Electronic Drum set

Now software wise we have Adobe Audition.

Our 5line mixer isn't cutting it anymore and we need to move up to something, but really don't have alot of money to blow on it. Since we still need to buy the electronic drum set :P

So we were thinking about something like this
http://www.musik-schmidt.de/osc-schmidt/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=214

But the thing is I really like the idea of multi track recording in Audition, because right now whenever we record all the vocal lines/instruments are mixed in and it makes editing difficult.

I was looking for soundcards that have 8 inputs but they are all like 300+$ I realise that we're gonna have to spend some money here on this but I would prefer something less expensive.

I was hoping some of you have experience in multitrack recording in Audition and could maybe help me out here, for example lets say instead of this we picked up a few soundcards that have like 2line ins (maybe 4 sounds cards with 2 line ins each) would we be able to use Audition to record each line at the same time from each of the sound cards, or maybe you've got a suggestion on a better sollution for us.

Thanks alot in advance!
Jordan

Upon Froogleing the Neumann mic :P
Maybe we could sell one of those to someone on this site, it seems to be worth more than I imagined... I just called Canada from Croatia to confirm the model and it is that.

you could use a usb/firewire mixer and just have that, i think those can do multiple tracks on input to computer. not positive

I'll give you $10 Canadian for the Neumann's - each! You could take the money down to FutureShop or wherever you Canucks shop and get a brand new Sony mike with a 1/4 inch plug. These condensers you have are a pain in the neck, "Phantom Power" - who's ever heard of that? Get some new stuff, that's all junk.

Dude. A Sony with a 1/4" plug over the Neumann? Are you nuts?

Jacl3, if you're serious about doing multi-track recording and having a studio set up that is ideal for boh podcasting and music recording, you're going to have to get used to the idea of spending some money. For one thing, the mics you have are good for voice, but if you really want something for guitars, you should get one built for it.

Likewise, if you need a mixer that can handle all of this, you're better off buying what you need versus what you think you can squeak by with. You can sell one of your Neumann's (you should be able to get more than $10 for it ;) ), and that will cover some of your upgrades, but I don't see a cheap alternative for you. It's either gonna cost you money, or cost you headaches.

Yeah I know I'm gonna have to spend some money I mean something in the 300-500 range wouldn't be the end of the world. But I mean over that then I would have to do some hard work to justify buying it for myself. My brother and maybe a friend are gonna be chippin in too (well helping with construction anyways!) since they have both always been involved in the podcasting adventures and also in the band. But yeah

as for micing the guitars thats not the biggist issue since we are gonna be using mostly electric instruments. We may need to do an acoustic once in a while but I mean we have already used the sennheisser for that with decent results.

I was looking at this mixer
http://www.shop.com/op/~ALESIS_MULTIMIX_12_USB_12_CHANNEL_MIXER_SPDIF-prod-25903803-34328372?sourceid=298

But I get the feeling that the USB out will only feed 1 already mixed line to the computer and that isn't what I am looking for.

This firewire one I would asume is better, but again I am not sure if it feeds all 12 lines to the computer or what?

Anyone tried the Lexicon Omega Studio?

But honestly what most intrigues me is this ... anyone know if it is good/works for what I want it to.

Edit:
Ok so I have been chatting it up with friends and this is what we have come up with lol, still a dream but considering we could have about 4600$ to go at this here is the possible plan.

The floor plan for the room we wanna turn into the studio.
