I just thought I'd share an interesting thought that I had today, with our Podcast viewers and listeners.

I was just perusing my web stats today for our podcast (links in the signature), and took some time to go over the part of the report that shows me where our hits (requests) are coming from. I was really surprised to see hits coming from Isreal, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, Japan, Singapore, and on and on. In short, we received hits from 5 of the 7 continents (none from Africa or Antartica), plus the subcontinent of india. All in all, there's about two dozen seperate countries listed in my reports. And I'm sure many other podcasts are the same.

So the thought I had was this: You're not alone. We're not alone. Sure, when you're listening to an mp3 or watching a video file on your iPod, computer, or other device you may or may not have anyone else around you, but you're (hopefully) enjoying and sharing the same show as someone across the world from you. And as a podcaster, to me that is a heady thing.

I don't know who in Isreal or who in Saudi Arabia is watching our podcast, but it seems somehow hopeful to me that if people from two countries that are so completely distrustful of one another can take five minutes out of their day to enjoy the same piece of entertainment from the other side of the world, then maybe, somehow, someone can use this incredible, versatile medium to bridge their two worlds! I don't think we'll be the ones (our little show has some new hairstyles to come up with first ;) ), but this tells me that someone could. Someday. And to me, that is where the real power of this medium, using the internet and World Wide Web, lies.

We're not alone... :)

So you're getting hits from Ursa Minor?

I didn't read that long B.S. Did I miss anything?

yeah its pretty cool when you see how world-wide your audience might be. I get a map from podomatic that shows where my downloads are from, and one week i had 36 downloads from eastern part of China.

You kind of assume that your listeners are from your own country, but when you see how much you have in common with others around the globe, you feel a little more special

Yeah, now we're getting hits from Egypt. I guess that means I can claim we're on 6 of 7 continents. Wooo-Hooooo!

When the bird flu showed up in Turkey, we had just done a podcast on the bird flu, and a listener from Turkey emailed and told me that there was so much misinformation flying around in the country that we were the source of the most reliable information that he had received. Made my day! (And then I triple checked all my facts...with great power comes great responsibility. :) )

I just started using http://clustrmaps.com to see where our hits to the homepage are coming from (doens't include hit to actual podcasts because they are hosted at libsyn), and I really like it. Lots of fun! :)

We might not be able to do anything about the Bird Flu, but if they get us in Turkey, at least they'll know how to look their best when they get it ;)

Yeah! Maybe if things get really bad you can do a show on how to dress up a surgical N-95 face mask. I remember when SARS was around there were pictures on the news of women walking around wearing designer masks.

I wonder if beads would ruin the efficacy of them?

Funny you should mention jazzing up the surgical masks. The Bedazzler (http://www.mybedazzler.com/?cid=200707) is back! :D

Later,

Oooh. This would be hard to pretty-up:

"And, got a beard? "Shave it," says Breysse, who recommends duct-taping the mask to your face to make a good fit." (From http://www.ph.ucla.edu/EPI/bioter/n95masks.html)

Maybe you could use the duct tape to hold the beads on?

The Bedazzler?!?! Wow. * Flashback * I had one of those when I was about 10!
