I have been podcasting a year now. Up until two weeks ago, I never had permission to play anything.

And I was unrepentant with this. I got into Podcasting to do this show. I am proud of my playlists and believe that I have as good a music show as anyone.

So two weeks ago I was going to play a song by a band called Working For a Nuclear Free City. One problem, I didn't own their CD, in fact all I had was this one MP3 of unknown origin someone had sent me. So I asked for their permission, which they quickly and freely gave.

Then last week, I got a comment from Adam who records under the name White Rainbow, thanking me for playing his stuff. I was relieved that an artist would be thankful I was playing him, as opposed to lawyer-ing up.

So this week I was looking at an early draft of the playlist, and I decided to do it. I started emailing and messaging through MySpace. Within 12 hours I had permission for 10 of 13 tracks. Now the three holdouts just never responded (though I have heard from one this AM). So after a flurry of emails I had a couple of options and the show is out (and available for Direct Download (http://spartacusroosevelt.podlot.net/SpartacusRooseveltPodcast06.49.11.mp3)).

Downside: Well this is definitely kicked up the work factor, as my shows are 10-15 songs every week. And there are some artists that are now beyond my reach. It's frustrating having to juggle the playlist because someone won't email you back. And there is no going back as I have now put myself on the radar for some of these labels.

Upside: Bands and Labels have been so responsive. One label guy was already a subscriber. Bands are already pointing friends at me. And some labels have given me carte blanche, including Fonal (home of some of my favorites like Pavohaarju and Shogun Kunitoki), Important Records (home of Acid Mothers Temple and Mouthus), Constellation (home of Godspeed You Black Emporer and Silver Mt. Zion), and VHF (Sunroof! and Skullflower).

Anyway, its a big deal for me. Stop by and give a listen.

its better that you do it this way.. then the other.. good job!. harder work but if some radio show was rebroadcasting part of your show you'd want to know wouldnt you?
