View Full Version : How To Be A Featured Podcast?

I'm wondering how one gets to be a featured podcast. I am starting to get the impression that volunteers were asked for and only two podcasts held up their hands, as I've seen the same two podcasts on the homepage seemingly forever.

This makes me think about being featured on itunes. Does anyone know how they choose the featured podcasts?

From what I've seen, your best shot at being featured here is to joing PodShow.

thats actually not the case. i pick the podcasts that should be featured based off of suggestions from users, friends and my personal tastes as well.
Are you categorically denying any preferential treatment at all to podshow shows?

As for the details of a PodShow relationship...those answer are all coming soon.
I'll take that as a "no"

I don't work with PodShow so I don't know anything concrete. I've done some independent reading, listened to the interviews and read the forum posts...
So this is what I've deduced... You own your show, your branding, your content, but you hand over the promotional and web serving reigns to them when you sign a contract. You then enter into an exclusive relationship for a year. The amount you're paid depends on the contract you negotiate. You are also offered incentives for high downloads. In return they market and come up with advertising schemes. In the case of GoDaddy, it appeared that podcasters across their network could partake (or maybe the were required to?), but there also appears to be the opportunity for individual sponsorship of a podcast.
At the end of a year, Podshow holds an option to renew the contract, but it is unclear if there is any renegotiation of terms. It would suck if there wasn't, because if Podshow's doing their job in that first year, then your podcast should be more successful and thus easier to promote, which means less work for the Podshow folks (but more for you, if you're the sort to build on your successes and improve over time).
That's what I've been able to piece together. It could also be completely wrong. :D

I think people are too quick to jump on the ferf about anything podshow. I mean yeah, there's no denying the fact that he is no affiliated, but just cause a podshow is featured in someway shouldn't have everyone sending smoke signals and crucifying him for it. I mean, most of the podshows lineup have been doing this for a long time, back in the day the ferf featured all kinds of shows...he's so busy runnign this place that it's understandable that he may have looked over the featured podcats. Sometimes life's unfair, at the end of the day we're all still podacstes and we should be doing for the enjoyment of it and not the dreams of becomming rich beyound our wildest dreams.....just my two cents...now feel free to rip me a new one.

Is your old one not working? :)
Seriously, I have no problem with who's featured. When I have the skill or time to work on the PDN, verify thousands of podcasts, deal with the user base, run the forums, and clean up artwork for a silk screening company (!) then maybe I can bitch... but until then, good job Chris!

thats actually not the case. i pick the podcasts that should be featured based off of suggestions from users, friends and my personal tastes as well. I wish i could say there was some magic to it, but most of the featured podcasts are actually shows I listen to and like myself, so i wanted to suggest them to others. The fact that some of them are part of PodShow now only confirms their quality and likeabilty.
Also... Im working on a way to get the featured interviews to cycle more often, but like everything these days, its not yet complete due to time constraints.
Well, just a suggestion, but instead of having the same popular shows displayed for months, why not randomly select a couple of shows from the database to display for the day? It just seems to me that most of us are willing to open our minds to something more than a show that that already has a following and give something new a try, so by randomly selecting a couple of shows that may not have any prominence, you may be offering something new to people that otherwise would remain yet another unknown. Through another thread, I have had a chance to listen to a number of other podcasts I would never have had exposure to, and have subscribed to a couple of them.

they already do select ramdom shows from the datebase.. i sometimes listen to them there off to the side.. and if.. they do ... do that.. wont that spot lose weight? i mean i know if its in that spot at the very least the production value is good and the show might be pretty good

I think you should make Punky! a featured podcast because it's very good. I've listened to nearly all of their shows.
I know this isn't an official channel but I'm a bit bored at the moment.

So since the inception of Podshow, what's a show that was featured that was not Podshow?
Anyone truly hellbent on making it can't depend on PCA alone. To be featured would be nice, but don't put all of your eggs in one basket or think that it can make you an instant success. At least it would expose you to people who won't see you beyond the top 10.

Interesting to see the numbers of shows that are podshow who were featured.
I didn't mean to sound like I was attacking you, I wasn't.
Many of those non podshows were before PS started I think. Still, interesting to see those numbers.
