I just noticed that the Specialist and AKG show is in the top 10. How is this possible? They go months at a time without doing a show. There should a fraud protection unit at Podcast Alley to prevent this type of thing. The top 10 should be shows that people actually listen to.

akg looks to be a monthly show, with a new episode 2 days ago. i dont see how that's not perfectly legit
plus, what kind of fraud protection could you make? there're ALWAYS ways to cheat the system. it checks each vote against other IPs for taht cast. If that IP hasnt voted yet, it counts it. with proxies and such, there's ways to renew yer IP.

hey they prolly just got some press or something..
do they have anything in there comments lines?
ElNacho

i do, however, agree, it's suspicious that they only have 19 comments overall. with 127 votes this month, and 700+ votes total, 19's rather suspiciously low, especiously considering the other shows have hundreds of comments

I just listened to as much as I could of The Specialist and AKG Show. If that show is an example of the finest in podcasting, maybe we should all fold our tents and go home.

Some web sites set up the PCA voting form on their own page, excluding the comments field. So that can sometimes account for a lack of comments. But yeah, more often it's cheating.

So it would seem, Nacho Man. It's too bad those two don't spend more time tring to discover and develop thoughful topics to speak about and less time tring to manipulate votes.

 Whoever said the vote-getters were the best shows? Those are the top-rated shows.
Programs like Survivor are consistently labled "top rated," but are they best TV has to offer?

In my opinion, the rankings here only act as a sort of ad for people who look at the Top 50 or Top 100 'casts. As far as a measure of quality, or the number of listeners, these rankings mean nothing. Some people beg for votes on their website (some of these people are in the top 10) and during their podcast; others never mention it but have thousands of listeners who vote for them anyway.
This is a new medium; I predict it will be some time before there is a solid way to measure listeners or rank, ala the Nielsen ratings.

mdattilo, i believe it's time to stop calling podcasting a new medium. A two year old kid isnt a "newborn", and a comparison of a human lifetime to a form of entertainment's lifetime is...uh...strange. what?

But he's right Nacho. It may not be "newborn" anymore, but it's hardly mature. There are many people still trying to find that "magic bullet" formula (for advertising) that will fit this new medium. The fact that there are still no norms (and the fact that we're still having this conversation) after two years is proof of the medium's "new" status. That doesn't mean it hasn't become an established medium; it just means we're all still trying to figure this thing out. :)

i dunt think there'll ever be a kind of "norm" for podcasting-related anything. because anyone of any caliber can do it.
WyethDigital
Jun 4th, 2006, 05:06 PM
I'd say that's true of everything; but I think eventually there will be a standard weight and measure for the types of stats out there, as well as what is considered decent ad rates for 'casts of different sizes and maybe even some based on demographics. It will never be as cookie-cutter as radio or TV, but it will eventually develop some conventions that can be pointed to as representative of what's available.

Nacho... Sweetheart, you're 14! Of course you don't think a two year old is a newborn! IMO, 2 years old is still a baby! Cute little pudgy legs, mispronunciations, silly attempts at getting attention and all!
Now that I'm 30, anyone under 22 is a kid, just so ya know. And podcasting? It's in the 2 year old just-learned-to-say-no-and-express-an-attitude, foot-stomping, loud-squealing, sloppy-eating, "look at me" phase. ;-)

The only reasons to be in the top 10 here are to get a bump in traffic and to get attention from the press.
I dropped out of voting for this month because I know roughly what I can do. When I can bash my way up higher I'll be in the game again. Since I got practically no extra exposure whoring votes the last few months I find it a waste of my PRECIOUS time.
I still vote for people who want to play the game. Just ask.
As for cheating, it's something I've considered throughout the year. Without getting into names, there are people who I'm almost sure have cheated there way there, and now they have a big audience. But it still doesn't feel right to me. I've kicked myself in the *** for not having the balls to do it because it's not against the law, and though other podcasters feel crybaby about it, I think the hellbent should fly.
As long as I live I will think that Mugglecast is bogus. If they're pros then my unit is 20 feet long.

Cheating is an easy thing to do. All you need is a mailserver and a Pearlscript. I've seen it done. Another thing is to just do a little warhopping. If you live in an average size town it is easy to find a couple dozen unique ip's with a laptop in no time.

Actually a two year old is in the Toddler Stage. They can make complete sentences, poop on the toilet (some not all), eat with utensils, walk with sure footing (because they've been walking for a year +) and use proper manners. This is not a guess this is from experience. I'm 33 and newborns are different than babies, babies are different than toddlers, so on and so forth.
The behavior you're speaking of is probably from a child that isn't very well behaved so maybe your perception of a toddler is skewed.

We don't cheat on votes, because it's CHEATING and We hate cheaters. In my book cheaters are pretty worthless. We decided not to even mention podcast alley votes on our show. It's there and people can vote. We LOVE getting votes, & voting for shows we enjoy. I always try to give a new show starting out (If I notice them) a vote & wish them well. Looks like there are 2 new shows on this thread. Oh and I'm so sorry I zoned out on you tokies

Well, that depends on whose research you're looking at, Kell! Piaget broke up stages right at two, so depending on the child and his/her personal rate of development, 2 could be a baby. Dr. William Sears' Baby Book goes up through 2 years as well. And as someone who has worked in child development and behavior management professionally for the past 12 years as well as being the mother of 3 children (all over the age of 2), I can assure you that to the mother whose youngest is two years old, that that child is still VERY MUCH her baby! :-)
I think it's pretty cool that you participate in the voting system... I don't know anything about your 'cast (except that we have several fans in common at Podcast Pickle, which makes me want to check it out at some point). But I do vote every single month for those podcasts I enjoy, and always appreciate seeing some of the comments I get at the alley. I don't generally ask for votes on my show, either (maybe once a few months back I've mentioned that if voting for their favorite casts on Podcast Alley is something they do regularly, that including Psycheology in the votes would be great), but I do post a list at my site of the casts I vote for each month.
I'm not interested in the cheating, but who really knows who is cheating anyway? Lots of stuff gets thrown around on PA boards about other casts, and it all sounds rather gossipy to me. I just vote for my favorite 'casts, and enjoy the votes that I get.
