We have a regular audio podcast show, Dr. John and Dr. Lorne show, and now want to add a video podcast on our main page.
Could anyone let us know how to do this? it would be much appreciated.
Please email to lookslikelorne@gmail.com

thanks so much!!

I should think you would add it the same way as you add any media files. Without any more specifics about what exactly you're trying to do, or the problems you're having, that's about the best answer i can give you.

Do you have a link to your site?

Thanks so much for looking at this topic.
The link to our podcastalley page is at
http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=13639

All of our shows are audio, but I just had only one video to put up as well. I am just not sure if there is a separate section for the one video, or if it has to be for example, show number 21 (and this in video)?

It is really kind of a separate thing all together as it is a documentary of us and wanted to keep it separate from the audio, but on the same page.

Any help much appreciated.
Cheers

Your site looks hand coded, is that right? Or is it some kind of template? Do you hand code your own RSS feed, or do you use a program to generate it?

Basically, if you don't want to have your video as part of your regular lineup of shows, you shouldn't list it in your podcast feed (or anywhere on your site that will automatically add it to your feed). So how do you do that? That really depends on the software you use. If you're using a blogging application to create your site and your feed, you may have to create a seperate blog page so it doesn't fall in line with your entries.

If you hand code your site, or your feed, it's just a matter of not linking it to your feed. How you add it to your site is somewhat dependent on the file and the host you have. If your file is QuickTime, or Windows, it should be just about the same way you add a mp3 file or picture to your site. If you're using a streaming Real Player file, you'll need to upload a .rm folder (or something like that), in addition to the media file.

For your visitor's ease of use, it's usually considerate to host the movie on it's own page with a minimum of other graphics (aside from your navigation). That way your visitors can choose to watch your video, or not, without your whole opening page being bogged down. Put up a nice, attractive thumbnail of the movie on your main site and link to the movie page that way.

in the rss, make it exactly the same, except in the enclosure:

<enclosure url="link" length="bits" type="look down there...." />

format mp4--video/quicktime
format m4v--video/quicktime

for wmv, avi, mpg, etc, i dont know them offhand, but you can look them up.

Isn't that usually referred to as MIME types?

Our podcasts is going to do video and was wondering if we could do this. Put the video on some of the free hosting areas like google video and such and then...link it to our main site instead of waisting storage space on our main site.

Also for thoes with lots of shows...what do you do with your archived show when you run out of space?

Google and YouTube both convert your video to flash files. Google does allow downloading, which ends up recompressing your flash video into an mp4 file format. It's pretty **** ugly, and I'm not sure the function can be tied to an RSS feed (though I have not tried to). Another reason to avoid flash is that they don't play on iPod. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure they play on any portable device.

We're considering hosting (non-iPod compatible) archives on YouTube as a way to alleviate bandwidth crunch and gain visibility. We already host some shows there just for visibility's sake.

If you're concerend about bandwidth and storage space, check out http://www.dreamhost.com (which has a terabyte of transfer and 20 GB storage for about $8.00 per month. It's not unlimited bandwidth, but unless you get lucky right off the bat and start with 10,000 subscriptions it'll take you a bit before you run out of space.

Libsyn (http://www.libsyn.com) has unlimited bandwidth and varying amounts of storage (depending on the package you want). They charge by storage, not be traffic. I don't know how large your intended files are, but for a video podcaster i wouldn't recommend anything less than 250 MB storage (which will run you about $10 per month last i looked). If I understand their system correctly, they automatically archive your shows to a slower server once per month, which does not count towards your disk space.

One of the easiest ways to handle multiple file types is to use PodPress if you are using wordpress for your blog. Its at wwwmightyseek.com
