View Full Version : A New Podcast Award

Last fall we had a discussion about setting up a podcast award run by podcasters themselves. Only podcasters would vote on the awards.

I set up the Podcast Peer Awards, and there was a burst of interest in it, but it died down. I’d like to give it another shot – to get those who singed up involved again, and to encourage other podcasters to sign up and participate.

Right now we’ve voting on about 15 catagories, and once they’re decided on we’ll start nominating and voting on shows.

If you signed up before, come on back. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s easy, free, and a chance to get involved with something that could be very, very cool.

Visit podcastpeers.org and sign up!

P.S. Members also get free ads on the site.

From the site:
If your podcast is at least three months old and you've done six or more shows, you're eligible to join the PPA. There is no charge for membership.

Looks like I'm out. Not been in it for six months.

A question, though: Why the six months and six shows? More precisely, why the six months? It seems kind of arbitrary. Take for example GeekBrief. They've been around for 5 months and are wildly popular, quite "regular," and consistent in quality, but they wouldn't qualify for your award. Our show, though only around since March, is already up to 12 episodes. By camparison, Tiki Bar has only had 17 episodes in one year. I'm using video podcasts for comparison because we're a video podcast, and it's a newly popular subgenre of podcasting. Heck! Even the video iPod is barely over 6 months old, and that's the main reason video podcasting has become so popular in the last couple of months.

I suppose your awards could be only for audio podcasts, but then that would eliminate a large number of shows from consideration.

Be curious to hear your reply!

I'd love to sign up :? . Although I've only been doing my show for a month we do have six episode up and plan on two per week every week. I have been a podcast listener since the beginning.

Don't get me wrong, Nacho. I know the ability to put video in an RSS feed has been around for awhile. But until Apple came out with the iPod with video late last year, it just wasn't as popular as it is now. So yeah, you were ahead of the curve!

A question, though: Why the six months and six shows? More precisely, why the six months? It seems kind of arbitrary.

It’s actually three months, six shows. (If it says six months somewhere on the site, please let me know so I can fix it immediately.) So the folks who do Geek Briefs could sign up.

You’re right, any qualification is going to be, by nature, arbitrary. We’d like these prizes to be voted on by active podcasters and people with at least a bit of experience, so we didn’t want to make it open to someone with, say, one or two shows. Three months/six shows seemed like a reasonable qualification – strict enough to avoid the people who would podfade after a couple of shows (or a couple of months) – loose enough that we’re not requiring an outrageous amount of experience to qualify.

Of course, like anything else, that could be changed by the members.

I suppose your awards could be only for audio podcasts, but then that would eliminate a large number of shows from consideration.

It sure would. With Vidcasts taking off, we’d be rather silly to ignore them. I should update the web pages to reflect that.

D'oh! That's what I get for posting while on potent cold medicine and a borrowed dial-up connection! My Bad! Your site clearly says 3 months.

Umm... Never mind...

No problem, and thanks anyhow, because your post inspired me to update the web pages so that it was clear that videocasts were covered too.

Wow! I think I just might fit under the wire (unless my math skills are as bad as my reading skills). Let's see, started last week of February, on through March, April, and now the last week in May... Yep, just about exactly three months! :)

I will now look into this further...

I tried signing up but never got a confirmation email (so I can't do anything). Is that working? (I'm sure that the email address was correct.)

I got confirmed last night. Seemed to work ok for me. Could it be that it was caught in a SPAM filter?

Rather than start a new thread:

The votes on quite a few categories run out soon. The polls run for fifteen days, and most of them will close on June 6th. So if you’re thinking of signing up, but haven’t yet, get over there! If you are signed up, but haven't voted, get over there!
