you're writing a thesis for your masters about advertising in podcasts and you dont even know if any podcaster has had any sort of advertising? good luck, dude.
plenty of podcasters have advertisers. there are systems like podtrac and kiptronic, which use information about your podcast and...advertise to advertisers, i guess...and then the advertisers come along, and the systems hook up podcasters with sponsorships, give them some of the cash, keep some. HBO did this with podtrac a month or two ago
and there are sponsorships like mine. podcasting-related or nonrelated busnisses or whatever approach the podcaster with an advertising deal, and possibly a contract.
podshow has been around since...i dunno, the dawn of podcasting? (september 2 years ago or somethin). it basically sponsors podcasts, and with a rather binding contract for some, or a less binding for others...it's kinda shrouded in mystery, blady blah, and stuff.
there are others with better, more useful info than me. just wait an hour or whatever. dude im serious. keep yer pants on for crying out loud.

okay
how common is it? well, it really all depends on your demographic. if your demographic is something that is also a target audience of a sponsor, you're probably going to be considered. no gaurentees either way tho.
