View Full Version : Anyone else get contacted about ads by the New York Times?

They wrote to me about advertising on my podcast and I'd get a payment for each person who subscribes. I'm trying to sweeten the deal for myself, if possible, so was wondering if anyone else has had dealings with them.

Thanks!

Congratulations I hope it works out for you.

You could join an affilate program related to your podcast, buy a domain, direct users to that and you'd get the same effect.

Well, not entirely. It depends on what the NYT is talking about paying per subscriber. Some of those affiliate programs require click-throughs, and personally, I know very people who do (click through).

Best bet to sweeten your deal is to get the best feed analysis software you can find. Second best bet: Be your own best advocate. Maybe suggest a minimum fee for them to even get in the door. I don't know how many subcsribers you have, and I don't know what the NYT is like to deal with, or what your feelings on ads are, so I can't really say what the best course of action would be. I do know that they charge a premium for their advertising, so you shouldn't be afraid to at least ask what you think your value is. How often do you think the NYTimes lets the advertiser set their rates for them? I'm guessing not too often!

Oy

Are the Sulzbergers getting generous with their shekels all of a sudden?

Congrats Jack, nobody should spout off establishment nonsense for free...

Jack,

Congrats on the potential ad deal. I assume by your post that you get paid based on every person that hears your show and then buys a subscription to the NYTs, correct?

I agree with Eric, the NYTs makes a ton of money off their advertising and you can bet that they get paid regardless of how many people sign up for the particular service of their advertiser. I am in agreement that you should ask for an initial fee, or at least a per download amount for your show.

Clearly you have something that they want, otherwise they wouldn't have contacted you. Hold your ground and good luck!

All great ideas so far! Here's another one. Maybe they would comp you an ad in the NYT (or on their web site) for your podcast.

Yeh. Just make sure it's not a Classified!

Actually, even though newspapers will run a one-off, your best deal is to buy a series over a number of weeks. If someone's gonna trade ads, it should be more than just a one-off.

As someone who makes money with Internet marketing (promoting affiliate programs) I will say that if you can get someone to sign up with the NYT via a podcast, then you'd be able to get someone to visit a website and sign up for another offer.

It's the same concept. How else would they expect to get signups without having someone visiting a website or making a phone call?

Entrepreneur.com has an affiliate program, you can get a % if someone signs up for one of their magazines or services. How is that any different from getting someone to subscribe to the NY Times?

Affiliate programs- pay per subscriber, pay per click, pay per lead, pay per sale- it all depends on which one you sign up for.

Not to take away from them contacting you - congrats on that but you do have other options.

Advertising inside a podcast is not the same concept at all (in regards to the mechanics of it). It is more intrusive to the listener, ads to the file size and has to be better produced than a simple AdSense box on your blog. Because of those things alone, you should charge more money. There's also the concept of "mind share." I think that is more effectivly achieved as a produced ad than a link in a box. I look at it as more of a radio or TV model than the web model you seem to be associating it with.

So with all due respect, I stand by what I said. The difference is that the NYT wants to run an ad within the podcast (There may be an ad on the site as well, but I think the "big thing" here is the ad in the podcast).

Don't get me wrong, I think they can be a part of your strategy, but frankly, for most people those %'s are really small, and the money isn't that great. Because of that, I personally tend to classify those as an addition to the strategy and not an alternative. I still think he would get better money from the NYT advertising in his podcast than by exclusively sticking with affiliate programs.

Can you negotiate how long the contract is for and maybe some details about renewing it over time?

i like when somebody starts a post, and then never comes back to it. It's not so bad when you just have an opinion,or a new show announcement, but when you seek advice it is good manners to at least acknowledge it.
