I just bought this - Berhinger MXB1002
http://www.behringer.com/MXB1002/index.cfm?lang=ENG
I'm fairly certain I can't use that with this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00022TNHM/sr=1-5/qid=1147226525/ref=sr_1_5/002-4865090-5270424?%5Fencoding=UTF8
A cheap mic like this. At least without running it through something that will act as an amp - like a PC.
Since this unit does have phantom power, am I correct in assuming that I will not need an amp if I go with condenser mics?
Finally - what would somebody value the mxb1002 at? I got it by mistake in an Ebay auction - the auction was supposed to be for a UB1002, but there was mix up. I could exchange the MXB1002 but I'm thinking that at the price I paid ($50) it's still a decent value. Did I get ripped off?
Current studio is two Logitec mics running through a splitter on the mic in of a sound card. I'm looking to upgrade to inputs for each mic and a sound fx (music, clips, etc...)

i think it's a good deal, sounds like one. at the very least, its a fair one.
with that mic, you have to get a chord to get it into the mixer
1/8''female-->split into 2X 1/4''male
go to radioshack, they'll give ye that, just tell them that thing
no amp needed

Yeah, you got a good deal on the mixer. No doubt. But you should really get a better mic. The one you list is fine for voice chatting and maybe in a pinch, but you would do so much better by looking around for something with XLR connectors vs the 1/4" plugs. That's the only way Phantom Power will work with a mic on your board, anyway.

Thanks for the info guys.
I tried plugging the Logitec mic in using a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter on one of the mono lines and couldn't get any signal from it - that's what made me think it needed some sort of amp.
Eric - you're right. That's a bad mic to use, but I'm also in a pinch. I plan on upgrading to condenser mics with SLR connections in the future but I just can't afford two of them right now - maybe in a couple of weeks.
I really wasn't planning on the mixer but the deal fell into my lap and I didn't want to pass it up.
If you get a chance - let me know what you think of my show.
I've got El Nacho's in the cue listening tomorrow. Eric - looks like you do video cast - do you do a audio cast as well?

I'm somewhat surprised that this didn't work when you used a 1/4" adapter. But then, details on that mic seem pretty sparse. It seems to have some sort of noise canceling electronics and an LED -- does it run on battery power? If not, it probably relies on current from the mic-in line. A lot of electret mics do, though I've never heard of any using it for more than just making the mic capsule work.
You could try turning on phantom power and see what happens. The odds that you'll destroy your microphone are... Well, I have no idea. But if you do, you'll have an excuse to get a better mic! >8->

The mixer has preamps. You won't need any separate unit for any studio microphone.

A Froogle search (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=behringer+MXB1002) shows it selling for about a hundred dollars. You probably got a better deal than if it actually had been a UB1002.

Thanks for the comments.
I tried with and without phantom power on. It didn't toast the mic. I think you're right on the draw from the mic-in because that mic also doesn't work if I plug it into the line in on my PC.
Anyways - I'm off at lunch to pick up a studio mic of some sort.
As for the deal - the more research I've done on the two mixers the more I think I made out on the deal.

no amp neededI looked around Radio Shack for this when I started looking for stuff. And the only thing I could find was if you used a number of adapters. You can find a 1/8" Female Sterio to two 1/4" Mono Males for $5.50 at B&H.

I went looking at saw that I would have to piece something together as well. I ended up buying a $30 dynamic mic with a 1/4" xlr jack and it worked and sounds way better. Tomorrow I'm off to pick up a second one for my cohost.

I'll give you a listen this week.
Nope, only do the vidcast at the moment. Although, if I were ever to do my own solo project it would probably be audio, since I have a face made for radio ;)
