I've been working off of the net on my site for 4 months now. I was able to make (using a heavily modded version of PHPosxom, and a large amount of XML scripting) a site that creates the RSS feed, and a large amout of the site dinamicly. I've tested it on my LAN computer and most of it is done.

Now I'm starting to look for a host. I have no problem using one host for my site and another for my audio files. I've been intending to do this for a while, as a paid host that doesn't allow streaming content is usually much cheaper than one that does.

The problem I've having is that most hosts now don't allow hotlinking.
What I mean is (take Libsyn for example) one uploads the file and makes a post. If I link to that file it will go out of date. (As far as I know) This is because Libsyn moves older files to slower servers, and then the URL of the file will change. I want to know if there is something that offers hosting like Libsyn, but I can hotlink to the audio files?

for site hosting, i recommend siteground (http://siteground.com/atrack.php?referrerid=17138):
domain free
12 gb storage
500 gb bandwidth
1000 pop3 email accounts
100 subdomains
5 slots for parking domains
super fast servers, and it's constantly upgrading. in the 7 months ive used 'em, they've upgraded storage and bandwidth by a lot thrice
the one time they've ever been down was a month or so ago. it was down for just 5 minutes. woot.
awesome support...etc. right-o, off i go
(and yes, ftp, duh)

for an audio host that allows hotlinking, i strongly recommend switchpod: (http://www.switchpod.com/index.php?ref=ElNacho)
always infinite bandwidth...
$3-100mb
$5-250 mb
$10-1 gb
$30-2 gb

Thanks I'll check those out. I'm always open to new options. And yes, I will use your link even though it is an affiliate link.

even though it is an affiliate link.
why even though? If I know someone can get mad props yo for me signing up to somethin, i'll go out and ask 'em for their referal link. no difference to me, and it makes them happier.

either way i get teh referal int his case
thanks
btw josh, if u read this, feel free to ask for the siteground referall..

This actually isn't a problem. When you host files at Libsyn, the file URL you're given to distribute (http://libsyn.com/media/foo/bar.mp3) is permanent. It redirects dynamically to one of a pool of servers: high-bandwidth servers for recent files, lower-bandwidth servers for slow ones. But the link will always work. Check out their support forums for more information.

As for other hosts, I have my site and some content hosted at Dreamhost (http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?69030). A terabyte of bandwidth, 20 GB disk space, etc. etc. for $8/month. I had some MySQL issues with them last year for my Wordpress blog, but they resolved that and they've been very reliable over the past few months. I don't keep most of my audio files there any longer because I'm consuming a bit more than a terabyte these days, but when I did their static file service was fast and reliable.

www.Libsyn.com is great..we've used it a long time. Links don't change. www.Podshow.com is gonna be a playa too in the near future for hosting.

Thanks for the hosts, I'll check them out. The only problem I'm having right now about hosts is I have to have PHP5 because of some XML stuff I've done with it for various tasks.

I'll check out your sites, and I'm very happy to hear about Libsyn, but I don't see how they can move older files to a slower server without changing the URL, but I won't question it for now.

They Redirect the url to the actual location of the file. It's kind of like using tinyurl.com. I recommend them. They are good. The only precaution I would offer is that if you are using Movable Type with MTEnclosures, then the redirection process with wreak havoc on your XML feeds. The plugin checks the validity of the files before it posts them. Not even that, but for some reason, it will check it even long after you've last re-built a page. So the result was that I would randomly have 75% of my files disappear off my feeds. So for me personally, it didn't work out. Their solution was to switch Blogging Software to where I could have something native that makes the feeds. But with the work I put into my Movable Type page, that wasn't a solution. So I switched away.
