Hi everyone. Great to see a forum on podcasting.
ok forgive me for being a newbie, I have just done my first podcast and posted on my blog using podpress you can view it here
http://inthepursuitofgod.com/mattersoftheheart/2006/03/16/greater-works-part-2-the-podcast/
Now I have been told that I should have a Podcast RSS feed, i dont know if
this is meant to be my blog rss feed but i get a feeling its not and that its seperate. is there anyway for me or you guys to tell me what my podcast
rss url is?
2. Is there meant to be a rss url for each podcast or 1 podcast rss ulr for all podcasts on the blog?
3. I know that my rss url for my blog as im using feedburner to track is
http://feeds.feedburner.com/ChristianBlogMattersOfTheHeart
but that is for my blog posts.. do i use that?
4. podpress gives me this for my itunes rss url
http://inthepursuitofgod.com/mattersoftheheart/&feed=rss2
but when i click it, all i get is my BLOG, not an rss feed.. im confused?
5. If there is anyone using podpress what should i have in my field that says iTUNES feed ID?
6. In the field that says itunes FEEDURL, is this meant to be the url i give to itunes?
7. I see most blogs that are podcasting have little subscribe buttson on the left or right like you do on a regular blog with a rss .. example of you go to podpress look on the left they have a button that says
rss podcast
itunes
podcastalley
mypickle
each one has a different url.. man this is confusing.. Any help you can provide in answer to these questions would help me out so much.. once answered I could be on my way :)
thanks again

yea its all pretty confusing but the only question I can answer is #2- Theres 1 feed for all the episodes in 1 podcast.
I suggest starting over using a site like blastpodcast.com , they will give you an rss feed and you simply load your files onto their site. it's really easy. then you can take the rss feed they give you and enter that into feedburner.
I'm sure theres someone smarter than me that can answer your other questions so just wait a little while.

From what I can tell, your feedburner RSS feed also holds your blog files. When I click it in my newsreader, it shows mp3 files as enclosures. But when I go to what is supposed to be your podcast page, I get a message that says "no criteria matches" (something is obviously mucked up). I suggest you work through their documentation again.
As for all the different badges for voting and subscribing, it's really all very simple. To get people to subscribe via iTunes automatically, you simply change the "http" part of your rss.xml link to "itpc"
An example of an iTunes one-click Subscription link would be this:itpc://www.wyethdigital.com/howtogirl/how_to_podcast/rss.xml (itpc://www.wyethdigital.com/howtogirl/how_to_podcast/rss.xml)
If I wanted any aggregator to read it, I would make it this: http://www.wyethdigital.com/howtogirl/how_to_podcast/rss.xml (http://www.wyethdigital.com/howtogirl/how_to_podcast/rss.xml)
As for all the "vote" and "rate" buttons (from Podcast Alley or Podcast Pickle), you have to work for those. It involves submitting your show to each directory; and then entering the link to that directory's listing of your podcast. The same goes for iTunes. Just because you can have people subscribe automatically via iTunes, doesn't mean you're in their directory! You'll have to submit your site, podcast, and feed info yourself. Be aware that iTunes has their own special tags that they like to see in your feed to make it easier to find and classify your podcast in their directory.
This probably doesn't make anything easier on you, but at least it fills you in on how things work a bit.
Good Luck!

Eric.. yeah the reason why you didnt see the page was beacuase it had placed MULTIPLE encloses on in the feed and was causing errors at feedvalidator.org so i deleted the post.. I have now put it back up after getting rid of the multiple enclosers here
http://inthepursuitofgod.com/mattersoftheheart/2006/03/13/doing-greater-works-when-you-berely-do-anything/
can you check if you can subscribe to this feed?
http://feeds.feedburner.com/ChristianBlogMattersOfTheHeart
problem is though if you subscribe to this you get all my BLOG POSTS aswell .. as sometimes i wont be doing podcasts just normal blog posts so should i have a seperate feed url for my pod casts
by the way my rss feed before i give it to feedburner is
http://www.inthepursuitofgod.com/mattersoftheheart/feed

This one does not work in iTunes. It gives me an error that there might be text-only entries or contains file types that iTunes doesn't understand. Since iTunes is not a newsreader, I'd guess you'll need to set up a different podcast feed.

Now, this feed does work in iTunes. Not sure what the problem is (don't use feedburner right now), but I can subscribe and download your mp3 file with this link.

reason why is when i was getting those problems with feedvalidator and multiple encloses i deleted feedburner url and started again from scratch so feddburner is still working with my feed..
but yes you can use
I opened itunes and put in
http://www.inthepursuitofgod.com/mattersoftheheart/feed and it downloaded the podcast, which is great.. and it didnt download anything else. so Im gathering I dont need a seperate rss feed i just put a button on the right saying subscribe to my podcasts and use the link
http://www.inthepursuitofgod.com/mattersoftheheart/feed
for both podcast buttson and itunes buttons
weird thing is and check this out.. if you go to
www.feedvalidator.com and put my feed in above the
http://www.inthepursuitofgod.com/mattersoftheheart/feed
it says..
This feed does not validate.
line 146, column 61: length of 5153 exceeds the maximum allowable for itunes:summary of 4000 [help]
Technorati Tags: Prayer, Christianity, Religion, Spirituality</itunes:summary>
do you know what that means? do i have to have podcasts on a post where the post writing is nly so many words

Right. iTunes wouldn't download anything else, because iTunes is not a text reader. You should try it in an aggregator that can read both text and media files. I'm trying it out in iPodderX and it downloaded text (just the headers) and your mp3. So something isn't right.

I would go with feedvalidator on this. your feed doesn't check out. You could add the link buttons, and some people might be able to work with it, but chances are, not everyone will, and when you start submitting it to directories, you'll likely get rejected for a bad feed. Especially on iTunes.
I'm not a programmer, so I couldn't tell you how to fix your feed, but someone else posted a feed template here, and I would compare yours against that. That or try a different blogging service, or use some other tools to create an independent RSS feed (from what your service provides). If, for example, you're using GarageBand (for Mac) you can use that to create a feed. There are also other software titles available. I suggest you look around this forum... most of your questions have already been asked and answered here.

I copied your feed into my client. Plain and simple. I didn't say it didn't work, I said it might cause problems for some. Especially when you start submitting it to directories. The problems you could face at that point would be rejected feeds, which could mean delays in getting listed. What you do about the Feed verifier is up to you, but if it were me, I would take the fact that it didn't pass seriously, and try to fix the problem. That's all I'm saying.

yep i agree. i think it was looking at the size of the post, as when i put the link in itunes in tunes pulled it in and if you right click and view info it shows the entire post.. i dunno lol.. this is all weird and new stuff to me
i just setup an account with itunes i can get over that you have to hand over your credit card to submit your feed link..... do you only have to submit your feed once to them, and then they update.. or do you have to submit each and every podcast to them
they pulled in th details and image and i guess its a waiting game to see if its accepted or rejected. they said something like 24hrs
WyethDigital
Mar 18th, 2006, 10:41 PM
It could take longer than that. 24 hours is the optimal time. It took mine 36 hours, and I've heard of people going for a week.
The credit card bit is so you have an account with the music store. I wish they would divorce the podcasting directory from that, but I suppose if someone hot comes along that wants to charge for a Podcast, they can be all set. Luckilly, right now, that's not the policy!
I agree, this can all be very confusing, especially for someone who just wants to create or get their message out. But I can tell you, I've been watching these forums for a lot longer than I've had a Podcast, and it really helped me out. There's a lot of good info here (you just have to sort of filter the the wheat from the chaffe).
I can also see how much easier it has gotten. So keep the faith! It'll all come together in the end.

Hi everyone. Great to see a forum on podcasting.
ok forgive me for being a newbie, I have just done my first podcast and posted on my blog using podpress you can view it here
If you want a podcast only feed, just use the category to control it. In your case your Audio PodCasts is cat #5 so that means your Podcast only feed is.
