View Full Version : Jay Leno: "You have a niche audience"

Well, leave it to me to try every avenue possible to get visibility for my show. I've been purusing the Tonight Show for several weeks now, and finally made some traction.

Today, I was declined (not a surprise), so I called back to find out why. Their response:

"We're looking for people with a broader appeal ... more Hollywood stuff ... etc."

Hmmmm ... really? So, what isn't broad about a guy who just started podcasting, no interviewing background, and in three weeks ... got top-rated appearances by celebrities and prominent executives? Bah ...

I asked them what they meant by a "niche audience," and they couldn't really respond.

Anyway, just thought I'd share ... no sense in getting bent out of shape over this ...

When they call back in 18 months, tell them your agent has you booked on Dave.

Hey, don't feel bad. We were under consideration for two months by a international cable TV broker before they finally declined. Thing is, I don't feel bad about that because now we get to control the show, the content, and whether or not we get "canceled." Of course, we're also not getting paid, but that may change as our popularity grows.

Old school thinking, like the stuff that permeates the Main Stream Media, doesn't know what to do with podcasting. Can they make a buck at it by repurposing content? What about competition? These guys went from having to compete against 120 channels and now, suddenly, they have to compete against 15,000(+ ). And that is why they marginalize: Because they're afraid.

What if Jay Leno turned you into the next "big thing?" Why watch Leno interview some 80 year old beet sculptor from Nebraska at 10:30 PM when someone can download your show and listen to you interviewing someone more interesting/important?

LOL! Yeah, I'm kidding! Sort of. While I've never actually seen a beat sculptor on Leno, I have seen butter and cheese sculptors. Hog callers. Long Distance Spitters. Basically, it strikes me that Leno and crowd book a few rubes from the heartland each year in order to do something that the big city crowds can laugh at (probably during slow movie months and rerun season).

They do it because Carson used to book weirdos and Carson had the talent to make 'em interesting and fun!

All the rest are pale imitations of Jonny. Except Jon Stewart. He's good.

Hey Ronald,
I'm gonna give your podcast a listen.

Frankly I imagine it would be very hard to get acknowledged by the tonight show. However, hats off for trying! It's those kind of bold moves that get people into the limelight so keep trying!

you might have a niche audience, but it's a lot more loyal than Jay Lenos - well it is in my experience on Radio Clash.

People stick with it, and it's a more, well, err, sticky medium!

I don't seem to get the sort of figures of churn that I'd expected, they stay pretty constant on downloads and Unique IPs...

"more Hollywood stuff"- does that mean crazy? How many hollywood-ers are actually sane?

Keep pushing after them Ronald!
