K I am hearing the term Podsafe music and i am quessing that any music that isnt authorized cant be used in the podcasting format. I was hoping to close my podcast with a song of the week. Is there anyway to get around this by maybe saying you can buy this song on I tunes or Amazon affilated program. I hear some strictly DJ podcast and are these guys running pirated podcasts and which directory dump them for it.

Well, you can play whatever you like, but if you play Copyrighted Music, and you have any popularity at all, the possibility exists that you will be sued by the RIAA or ASCAP or BMI for not having paid royalties on the music.

The Podsafe Music Network, on the other hand, only requires that you report that you played a given song, and provide a link back to the artist's PMN page on your shownotes. Thus, most of us have decided to proceed that way.

dude...

The music on the podsafe music network is far superior to much of your mainstream music outlets. Spend some time looking through it and you'll be absolutely amazed at whats available. But if you play copyrighted material, you're likely to get sued...its so not worth it...

Or come by my show - www.jerseytoddshow.com and check out some of the music that I'm playing from the PMN.....cheap plug.

magnatune.com also offers royalty-free podsafe music of very high quality, and they impose no conditions other than that you credit them and their artists.

They are also completely transparent about their business model and very helpful to podcasters.

While there is a real danger that podcasters could get sued for playing licensed music, most likely you would get a cease and desist letter, and have to take down your shows that violate someone's copyright.

I don't know whether anyone has gotten such a letter or has been threatened with a lawsuit yet, but nobody wants to be first.

Okay so the podcast wont be remove from i tunes directory for having copyrighted music. I want to list it there cause it a more popular venue for it. While my podcast is very very development still my lead in was going to be my niche of expertise and then a review of general books movies and then close the show with a song of the week since i dont know alot of non commercial music i was leaning heavily on older non popular music.

no guaruntees that I-tunes won't take you down for playing copyrighted music. In fact, an argument could be made that if they know that you're playing copyrighted music and don't do anything that they could be dragged into any case against you. In such a situation, I think i-tunes is probably monitoring their feeds...

I agree with El Nacho...just don't do it.

The quality of the music on the PMN is so superior to anything you'll hear on commercial radio; the only music I have on my MP3 player is from the PMN.

Check out some of the music there, support these great artists; you'll feel good, attract more listeners, and will have some awesome music on your show!

nope.

But I play two songs in my podcast every week. I search for independent artists on a number of sites. www.soundclick.com, www.purevolume.com, www.indieheaven.com ,..... All of these sites have ways of emailing artist. All of the artist I play are Christian and they are just so cool to email. Some of them are elated that their music was found on the internet. Actually you will find that podcasters and independent musicians have a lot in common.

Also one thing I do is when I get a really nice letter back from an artist I'll post it on the website and in somecases I'll read it on-air (line).

It will be hard work finding artist you like. This forced me to think out of the box. I find music from every different genre available. I play hip-hop, heavy metal, acoustic ballads, country. All of this is a great way to bring a new audience to your podcast.

I even have a few of the musicians listen.

Remember: podcasting is about being creative and doing what hasn't been done before. So look for music that isn't being played on the radio.

I would bet most of us had dreams of playing those gems from the past that we alone were fans of, bringing them to a new life with Podcasting. But, we are truly surrounded by scum bags like the RIAA, Sony, Metallica etc.

I would also suspect that most of us that play any music at all, have had to 'learn' about the musicians that make up the mostly independent PodSafe music tracks we now play. In fact when you think of it, it is really a higher calling than playing out that lost vinyl jewel.

My space can also be a good source for music.

One of my favorite indie bands had a myspace page. I e-mailed them and asked if they owned the copyright and if I could use it... Voila! I have a theme song no one else in podcasting has and they get a plug and some webtraffic (plus, they like my show).

Just make sure the band owns the label or isn't signed.

Good call Tom, I use myspace to find all my music.

As long as the Label isn't 'Major', you're safe.

But just because they're unsigned doesn't mean you can play them, you have to ask, and from what I've experianced, everyone is more than willing to let you use their work.

Until now out of all the bands Hollywood Undead (http://www.myspace.com/hollywoodundead) was the only band that said 'no' to me, and they're on Myspace Records.
Stupid Myspace Tom and his gay record company

Yep, the PMN rocks. I play 5 or 6 tunes every day on my 'cast now. And I'm getting some favorite artists on there, many of them have cut me promos and sweepers...unsolicited. I don't miss mainstream music AT ALL, and if I need a Stones fix, I still have my CDs. I could do without the majority of crap on the radio anyway. The good artists, the smart ones, the forward-thinking ones, will find ways to make some of their tunes "Podsafe". Unless you're looking for a specific type of music (which, i guess, you are), it's really not hard to find fantastic stuff. I usually just search on some keywords, or see what's been posted new in the last few days, or check my favorite artist's pages to see if they've posted a new song.

attract more listeners

I really don't think there are many (non-podcaster) people sitting around thinking "Man I sure could go for some properly licensed music right now."
