Ping-o-matic (http://pingomatic.com/) does the same thing, although I don't think it covers as many. If you have Feedburner, you can also turn on PingShot which will also do it for you automatically.

It does indeed- the ping service really came about as a natural extension from the capability offered in the script to ping sites of your choice whenever you add/edit feed items (similar to blogging apps pinging on new posts)- for those who perhaps wanted to ping...but not run phpFM..
There are a few further changes up my sleeve which hopefully will improve the service for podcasters- it is also important to note that it was conceived as a result of feedback from the podcasting community..so any suggestions are greatly recieved!

No problem, its a pleasure to help out the podcasting community- a few more hosts are in the works so the service should be extended even further very soon.

The service on the site is awesome, but exactly is the download on the page.
I looked it over, and couldn't decide what exactly it was for... of course, it may not matter much, as I use Libsyn and don't have full access to everything on my serverspace.

The download on the page is for the phpFM script (php Feed Manager - which can also be viewed via the demo link). The script is an online feed manager which you can run from your own website much in the same way as a blogging platform. The script can help you manage your podcast feeds, with a simple user interface, XML validation, simple media-2-feed (allowing you to easily create a new feed item in one button click), podcast media upload options (either local upload or via FTP..to say Libsyn), automated XMLRPC pinging whenever you add/edit podcast items and RSS 2 HTML so you can display visually on any of your sites pages a list of your podcast episodes, or most recent episode.
Its essentially a podcasting platform..allowing podcasters to just concentrate on producing podcast media and not fiddling with feeds(!)
The ping service offered via the site mirrors that included in the script, but aims to help out everyone, regardless of whether they can (or choose to!) use the script, publicise their podcast..whenever they want!

Since your not providing a API to actually ping you then you ping the other sites, care in sharing the ping code or script you have developed, some of these sites do not have public information on pinging them..

All the sites listed do have public information on pinging them- (discoverable with a google search) though some are foreign language sites so finding the information unless you are a native speaker may be hard.
The advantage of using services such as phpFM is that you dont have to maintain a large list of ping hosts yourself (incidentally server side functionality is currently being worked on for the site).
As far as the engineering behind the code, its in a (fully operational) beta and is not open source at the moment I'm afraid, should it become so, I'll post back here.
